2010 tOSU Running Backs discussion

Was looking at stats for the OU game and wasn't impressed with the running game. Saine had 48 yds on 12 att = 4.0 ave. Pryor 35/8 = 3.5 ave. Herron 27/9 = 3.0ave. Berry 23/4 = 5.8ave. Hall 14/4 = 3.5ave. Team stats were 158 yds on 41 att = 3.9 ave. (there were 36 pass plays total)

I don't think those are great numbers against the level of competition. I think we have great backs and a good O line this year so not sure what's up.

Seem to be focusing on the passing game big time, not to mention Pryor might be the best running back we have. I hope they can get more balanced as the season grinds on though.

IMO we do have great running backs but the most dangerous one's aren't being played until the 4th quarter. Love Zoom out of the backfield as a reciever, but I truely feel that the best Rb's we have are the other three. Boom isn't as dangerous as Berry/Hall IMO but his toughness and his above average vision make him a pretty good back. Everyone talks about Saine showing patients when he runs but IMO he's best when he goes full tilt to the LOS knowing where he wants to go. If you make Saine throw on the breaks just 1 bit he'll be stuck in the backfield with a loss.

Which is why I think Berry/Hall need a few carries with the first team O. I feel their running style can set up some zone read later on in the year. Their ability to make people miss is something that Zoom just can't do.

Saine should still have a major role on this offense because he's a mismatch when lined up with a saftey or linebacker out of the backfield. In saying that though I think it's about time to see if Berry/Hall can do any damage. Because Dinardo is rigth from the BTN, we've got to find a go to guy at tailback. Hell if it's Smith then I don't care about burning his redshirt get him the ball then. Pryor cannot be our leading rusher everygame. As Dinardo said, I think when all your offense comes from essentially one player then it becomes that much easier to shut down that offense. Dinardo is usually a moron but I happen to agree with him on our tailback situation.

I just don't get why Berry/Hall haven't gotten in sooner. They know what Saine/Herron can do so why not see if the other guys can't bring a spark that the upperclassmen don't seem to bring.

I agree, The younger backs deserve some reps early in the game, not garbage time. I would love to see the staff use split backs with berry and saine, then motion saine to the slot to get a mismatch. I have been impressed with boom this year, he has been making people miss. But Boom still doesn't seem like a home run hitter. Also, the power of Carlos Hyde, we haven't heard anything about him since camp ended.

REPORTER:: How do you feel about the running game so far, specifically the run out of your tailbacks?

COACH TRESSEL: I think B. Saine and Boom have been very solid. I think Jordan is, I don't think what the situation is, if he's in the game he's fine. Jamaal Berry is coming along, he's getting some reps in practice and also has been fortunate enough to have some snaps in games. Carlos has been down a little bit with an ankle, which I think he's going to be very good, I was hoping he was going to make a difference for us, as I watched in the spring was the special teams, he was a good cover guy, a good blocker on some things and I hope he can get back to that, and then Rod Smith's been here a short time and been very impressive, so I think they've been fine.

We've probably had a little bit better run/pass balance than maybe sometimes when the run got 75% or 85% of the reps, so if you're looking at pure numbers, we're probably, I don't know how many yards a game we're averaging, but there have been years we've ended the year with over 200, and we might not even -- I don't know where we are now, anyone know?

REPORTER:: 206.

COACH TRESSEL: Okay. But I think that's going to be fine.

I may be wrong but I have to admit that I am not happy with the running game I have seen.
Our passing attack has been more than adequate to keep the safeties back so where's the problem? I like to think that we have a good O line and running backs and we should be romping and stomping through the daisies.
