2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Man, I'll just never get why so many of you feel the need to dwell on the negative. If tOSU wan't winning 10+ games a year, B10 titles, beating scUM and going to premier bowls year after year, I'd get it. But come on, these guys know what they're doing. They're also coming off two of the best classes in school history. So we didn't clean up this year. We already have two highly rated DL for 2011. We won a Rose Bowl a month ago. 2010 is shaping up to be a special year. Give it a rest already.
I'm not jumping your [censored] here or anything, NFBuck, I'm really not. But there's a difference between "dwelling on the negative" and seeing a somewhat negative pattern and recognizing the wisdom of trying to find solutions. (Not that we here can find solutions; that's up to the staff. I just hope they recognize the need to do so.)

im not as down on this class as a lot of people seem to be

its a solid group of guys IMO

sure its disappointing that we lost out on the big names, nobody is going to argue that

but the 18 that signed is a solid group, its not going to garner national attention like the 08 and 09 classes, but I think any of the players in this group will have the ability to get the job done when it is their time to be called upon

Does a down year equate to a "pattern"? I mean, the last two classes were loaded. And again, I go back to the results on the field. To each his own I guess.

I imagine he's talking about the pattern of missing out on a significant percentage of kids who decide late in the process.

We all got very spoiled with Terrelle Pryor's hype. He was literally one of the biggest hype coming out of high school like LeBron James had.

Ohio State managed to land him. I'm still ecstatic over that year when they landed Pryor and 3 great offensive linemen to go with him.

We were bound to have a slow year, but it doesn't really matter because there are many diamonds in the rough may turn out to be even better than the media thought they would be.

I know we never made the offer, but weren't we "leading" for Gardiner as well? My impression is/was that he was very interested, we chose not to pursue in order to honor our commitment to Montana, he got pissed and went to scUM.
I'm going to summarize what union and wade said about Gardner months ago. Tahj Boyd was supposed to be a Buckeye and supposed to give Gardner the time he needed to develop if he came into the fold because he was so raw at the time... when Boyd spurned them the Buckeyes needed a more ready QB from '10 because of a lack of depth at the position in case Pryor leaves early. Thats pretty much what I recall.

And wade said that people went too far with thoughts of landing Gardner... all he said was that he was a Buckeye fan growing up.

If I messed anything up, I'm sure the BPRT will correct me.

I was feeling pretty good about everything, until I read through most of this thread. Now I'm like; Forget it, I quit, I can't do this anymore, man. My head's about to explode. My whole life sucks. I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know where I'm going. [strike]My dad just died[/strike] Tressel can't close. [strike]We just killed Bambi[/strike] We only have one O-line recruit. I'm out here getting my a** kicked and every time I drive down the road I wanna jerk the wheel INTO A GODD***ED BRIDGE ABUTMENT.

That's it. I've had it with this dump! We've got no O-linemen, we got no ace-recruiter,... our pets' HEADS ARE FALLIN' OFF!!!

If the "problem" that needs solved is that Jim Tressel is not willing to pull out the stops and do "whatever it takes" to convince teenagers and their parents to sign an LOI for OSU I will take the status quo - thank you very much.

I don't necessarily think he is talking about the class as a whole, just the way it finished up. It isnt just this year where the staff has been unable to land the 4 and 5 star recruits close to national signing day. It seems like the staff is able to establish some relationships with kids early on, enough so that OSU becomes that recruits leader for a decent amount of time. It seems that the longer a kids recruitment goes on, the more time other coaches have a chance to get into a kids ear about thier school. It seems like once another school starts to gain momentum with a recruit, that its been hard for the staff to get the kid back on task in terms of the recruit favoring OSU again. A few examples of this in this recruiting year would be: Josh Shaw, Nick Montana, Shariff Floyd and even to a lesser extent Seantrel Henderson and Lamarcus Joyner. Now at some point the staff has got to be able to turn up the pressure and convince the kid to come to OSU because other coaches do turn up the pressure on the recruit and convince them that other schools are best for them. Im not saying that the staff needs to become used car salesman and what not, but they have got to be willing to sell OSU to a recruit which it seems like they might have some trouble doing the closer it gets to NSD. TOSU should be able to sell itself, but in this day and age when the "glamour" programs and the "hot" programs are constantly displayed in print, on the net and on TV it is becoming harder and harder for an institution to sell itself to a recruit who doesnt necessarily "see stars" towards that particular school. This current recruiting class is a very solid recruiting class so it is not a knock on the staff or the recruits. But we as fans like to consider OSU as one of the elite programs of college football, but how come we arent recruiting as well as the other elite programs i.e. Florida, USC, Texas, Alabama? This is all just my opinion but I think this is why so many people are frustrated with the way recruting classes end up finishing.

My only problem with this is , is Taylor Graham really more ready than Devin Gardner would have been? Graham has been out for the majority of the last 2 season with injuries, which sends up a huge red flag to me.

That case can be made now, but I imagine the coaching staff was not anticipating him missing the majority of the season. Anyway, moot point now.

I love this class. With few exceptions Ohio State recruits players who want to fight for Ohio State not prima donnas looking to raise their draft stock or get out of the cold weather. Not suprisingly that attitude raises many OSU players' draft stock. Coach said it best "(They have) versatility, maturity and passion to be a part of this."

Go Bucks!

Well, as long as the status quo includes beating the snot out of Michigan every year . . . .
