Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

Oregon has absolutely no chance against Ohio State. None. They play in a weak conference where there is no concept of defense. The Pac !0 is only a shade away in quality better than Conference USA. They have no idea what real football is about and they will have a rude introduction to the subject come New Year's Day courtesy of the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Ducks defense is atrocious. We know this. There is nothing stopping the Bucks from running at will. Pryor will simply have his way with the Ducks D. The Buckeye defense, the likes of which Oregon has not seen all year, will effectively neutralize the house of cards offense that is the spread option. Try playing 48 minutes of smash mouth with the Buckeyes. The Ducks will quickly understand that they have been overmatched and outclassed. And speaking of class, you would never see a Jim Tressel-coached player smack another in the face except within the lawful context of a game. The Ducks are done. Stay in Eugene and mail it in. The result will be the same. The Bucks are unbeaten against the Ducks in recent history, and it is just going to stay that way. Sorry.

Hopefully the team DOES NOT take this approach thats for sure... What's with the extreme confidence here? I don't know about you but I'm still a little concerned about #21 breaking a run or two for long yardage. Sure as you say this team will no doubt have the best overall defense that they'll see for a while, but don't discount this ducks offense. As great as we are don't be surprised at some point in this game these message boards are filled with things like "did we not practice tackling", or "what in the world is our defense doing" or " geez we've got to get off the field on third down".... They're damn good, and perhaps the best offense we'll have faced since last year's USC offense.

Now don't get me wrong we'll win our battles on defense. Infact I believe we'll hold them below many of their averages, but considering how their averages are pretty high we're still going to give up some yards. I do believe we have the potential to shut them down completely, but its going to be assignment football, and sound fundamental tackling that gets that done.

I don't however share the same feelings about Oregon's defense. They can do whatever they want and I simply don't feel like it's going to matter. Don't be surprised if we start slow as we normally do (and fall behind initially) but once we get our feet on offense I don't see Oregon stopping this offense. Sure we're not 100% there yet but we've been running the ball against Iowa, Wisconsin, and Penn State all of which put 7-8 in the box and still couldn't stop us. So it doesn't matter to me if Oregon puts 8 in the box because I firmly believe our oline will be too much for their front to handle.

We'll get some stops, and force some field goals early and in the late part of the game we'll be picking up chunks of 6+ yards. Again Everyone talks about the typical match up of our Defense, but what about their defense that's pretty medicore? We're the better overall team and we'll show that Jan 1, but don't think it won't come without resistence because if you do you'll be pretty upset when it's a well fought game for 3 quarters.

One ill-advised experiment with throw-back unis doesn't rise anywhere near the level of having one booster supply a majority-holder share of your athletic budget.

Ohio State can tell Phil Knight, "Thanks, but it didn't go over well last time."

Phil Knight, for all intents and purposes, owns the ducks.

Difference is, the Bucks did it for one game. The Ducks did it permanently. But, if you have Phil Knight as a benefactor and don't have much tradition to lean on, it's not such a bad idea. Oregon's awful uniforms are a part of their identity, and recruits seem to like it. Not all of their combos are awful, just most. I think their all white get-up is pretty sweet:

Oregon gets to option to choose home or away jerseys, right?

Maybe it'd be best to just phone us with the colors they'll be wearing.

Oregon AD: So we're wearing our home jerseys.

OSU AD: Ok good, so we'll wear white.

Oregon AD: Well, actually...our home uni's have a lot of white.

OSU AD: I thought the aways had a lot of white and the diamnond plating.

Oregon AD: Oh not, those are for conference games after 4 pm EST.

OSU AD: You mean the ones with the wings?

Oregon AD: No, they're like our throwbacks.

OSU AD: Weren't those green?

Oregon AD: Yes, but the ones with the white and yellow.

OSU AD: White? Oh. So we should wear our scarlet ones?

Oregon AD: I just got off the phone with Nike and they said our uni's will have a lot of scarlet.

OSU AD: ....

Oregon AD: I think we might have some old jerseys around. You can just wear those. Nothing we wear in the past looks like what we where in the future.

[snicker in the background]

OSU AD: Phil, is that you?

Phil Knight: Quack, Quack!!!!!

OSU AD: I knew it!

Oregon AD: Did you know we beat USC AND Purdue. Shoulda hired me, bitches! QUACK QUACK

OSU AD: Mike, there's no reason to get belingerent.

LeGarrette Blount: We owe you an ass-whuppin!!!

[Click]

OSU AD: So.....away uni's it is? What's Lebron's phone number? Maybe we can get him to talk to Phil Knight.

Jim Tressel: Let me pull it up on speed dial.

I've always thought Indianapolis would be a good place for a major bowl game, especially now with one of the nicest venues in the country in Lucas Oil Stadium. Anything other than the current system we have in place is pie in the sky, unfortunately. The fact of the matter, as always, is that California and Florida are more appealing vacation destinations than anywhere in the Midwest.

I'm anxious to see how many Oregon fans make the trip to Pasadena. I know we'll travel as well as we always do.

The Oregon fans will show up. And so will the UCLA and USC fans and all the folks who moved from the Midwest to LA -- and don't expect too many of them to be rooting for the Scarlet and Gray. But pleeeeze, no arena bowl games, not in Indy, Minnie or Deeetroit. Football is playable in the great outdoors even in January and real fans will show up. How many empty seats do you see in Lambeau, Heinz, Meadowlands or Foxboro when those teams are in the playoffs?

Do you really think that a playoff game in an NFL team's hometown is a fair comparison to a neutral-site BCS game? I don't. Yes, Ohio State fans would absolutely fill up an outdoor stadium in the region. Not many other teams would, unfortunately. The "real" fans in the host cities won't care who's playing if it isn't their hometown team, and people aren't going to spend vacation dollars to go sit in 20 degree weather. I agree that it would be nice to see it happen, but from a financial standpoint alone, it never will.

My apologies for derailing the thread. Back to the Rose Bowl discussion.

I think these are their best unis or sub the green helmet on this one.
