Red Sox make Russell Martin offer

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox have made an offer to free-agent catcher Russell Martin, according to Martin's agent, Matt Colleran, who said Thursday he is in "serious" discussions with the New York Yankees, Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Colleran said he expects to continue discussions Thursday and into Friday.

The Red Sox have publicly insisted that they are comfortable going into next season with Jason Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia as their catching tandem, but signing Martin, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner coming off two subpar seasons offensively, would suggest that the Red Sox aren't quite as confident about their catching tandem as would appear.

Contd....

I don't get people that hate baseball and everything it seems to stand for today, yet still feel the desire to waste their time posting about it and how much they hate it. Wouldn't you be better served just ignoring it and not wasting your time even posting about it?

Definitely need bullpen help. I'm glad Paps didn't end up getting traded. He had a bit of an off year last season, but he's still a great closer.
hmmmmm....you're right there. it does take a tremendous amount of effort to click reply, type a few words, then submit.

latest rumors have them possibly signing Scott Downs.
solid lefty reliever. much needed addition if it happens.

Crawford in LF at Fenway?
possibly fastest OF in baseball playing in the smallest OF postion in the league.

I enjoy baseball, and it does suck to see Crawford going into Fenway. Will really cut-down on the great defensive plays he turns in on a routine basis with the monster so close behind him.

It takes like 3 seconds to post about it. And if I spent my time posting/talking in real life about things I like, I'd have a boring life. I don't get why people hate the Buckeyes and still feel the desire to waste their time on a Buckeyes message board.

Only reason I hate the sport now is because of what the big-market teams have done to it. And the funny thing is that the fans of the big-market teams usually don't even get why everyone else feels this way.

I completely get it & understand where you're coming from. I agree that the game has definitely been ruined, not only by the big market teams, but also the steroid issue. Either way, neither of those issues is going to be going away any time soon, so we all might as well get used to it lol.....that being said......

LETS GO RED SOX!!!!!

do you complain that Bill Gates keeps getting richer while that bum under the overpass is still begging for food?

seriously, if the small market teams would sink the luxury tax money given to them back into their teams, the gap would be noticeably smaller.

more than once, the Rays received more money fro the luxury tax than they paid out in payroll.
meaning they could have more than doubled their payroll for free, but chose not to.

How is that a rebuttal for how terrible this system is? If anything, that's yet another reason to despise it.

A salary cap, and baseline, are desperately needed in baseball.

You could give a small market team a ton of money and the big-market teams would still pay more to get the best free agents.

Unless the small-market teams want to overpay for guys like Jayson Werth (lol), they won't be competitive on a yearly basis unless they grow their own talent. Which is difficult, considering five or so teams can just wait for other players to get good, then sign them for life. The Twins might be the only exception to this, except they haven't even won shit. They're just competitive, kind of. They were swept by the Yankees last year.

And Bill Gates has nothing to do with a sport that was once great that I used to play and love.

Most of that money from the luxury tax goes back into expenses, so it does go to the team, they just can't afford for it to go to players. It's a terrible system and the only people that find justification in it are the fans of the "haves".

that system is used in every other industry in America.
it's called capitalism.

no one is gonna tell McDonalds to cap their spending to make sure Jim-Bob's burger world can compete.

yet we expect that in our professional sports? why?

Baseball is the only one of the big 3 not to have a salary cap.
it also has the smallest playoff (# of teams)
yet they still produced more different champs (9) over the last decade than football (7) or basketball (5) did.

so Baseball's "terrible" system apparently creates more competitive balance than either of the other sports.

Dude, seriously? Sports is entertainment, not capitalism. It's supposed to be about competition. Like I said, the only people that try to rationalize this lunacy are the fans of the "haves". Thanks for making my point.

As to the championships, yes, good scouting can allow small market teams to bubble up, but that's a red herring. Look at the teams that have sustained success...they are the one's (well, except for the incompetent Cubs) that are consistently driving up salary by signing those smaller market teams players away from them. Fans of small market teams have to hope that their franchise can develop it's own players, then capitalize on a small window before their players are looted from them. How one can rationalize that objectively is beyond comprehension.

BTW, looky who those nine champs are: the only one that would qualify as a "small market" would be the Marlins and the Giants. All the others (NYY, Arizona, Boston, Chisox, Cards, Phillies, Angels) were big market teams that spend/spent big money. So, your point rings pretty hollow.

PROFESSIONAL sports is a business.

name another business where the owner is limited in what he can spend to ensure his competition has a fair shake.

none that I can think of.

hell look at college sports.

nobody tells OSU to quit using their revenue to build bigger nicer facilities to attract better recruits, and pay more money to get better.
We gotta make sure Kent St. can keep up.

Hell, we don't even want small schools to have a shot at a title in that sport.
