why would they try? unless they go Yankee/Red Sox crazy, they aren't winning. I wouldn't try either if the deck was stacked that hard against me.

they can win that division (or at least a wild card) and make an october run without spending Yankee/Red Sox money.

going back to '03 (farthest back i looked up standings), their division winner, and NL wild card was under $100mil every year. EVERY year of an 8 year run can't be a fluke.

9 of those 16 teams spent $80mil or less

more than half of baseball spends $80 mil, so it's not like that's a completely unreachable number.

once you're in the playoffs, it's anybody's game.

but with a payroll as low as theirs, they're always gonna suck.
and suck really bad.

$34 mil is an embarrassing payroll for a professional sports franchise, no matter what sport.

false. once you're in the playoffs, it's the big spenders' game.

or are you really trying to argue that it doesn't matter if you spend a bajillion dollars or not? because if so.....why do all the good teams do it?

I'm not saying it makes zero difference.
But lately, the small spenders have handled themselvrs quite well in the postseason.

The Rangers, Rays, Rockies have all made the WS with small payrolls in the last 4 years.
Compared to the teams they beat, the Giants ain't big spenders either.

Spending big helps, but it gaurantees nothing.

False. That would not fly in the NFL.

In the MLB world of haves and have nots, it is not only acceptable, but a core principle in the circle of life for the weak squads to cut their losses, increasing the gap between themselves and the contenders.
The Rangers, Rays, Rockies have all made the WS with small payrolls in the last 4 years.
Which is the exception to the pattern in the free agency era, not a rebuttal of it.
Spending big helps, but it gaurantees nothing.
It gives you a much better chance of success.
