2010 polls - Pre-season and regular

Oregon still doesn't play defense (nat'l rank is 52). While they probably deserve to be top 5, the disappointment among Buckeye fans will be justifiable if they pass tOSU in the polls.

Defense wins championships and Oregon doesn't have it. I can only hope that SouthCampus is correct when he guarantees an Oregon loss.

Question: Other than USC, who was the last team from the Pac-10 to go undefeated in the regular season?

Answer: Arizona State in 1996. Before that, the 1991 Washington Huskies team. You have to go pretty far back before that to find the next unbeaten, untied pac-10 champ going into bowl season.

Oregon will lose at least one game.

There's also a daisy chain that the voters seemed to ignore.

Undefeated Auburn gave S. Car their only loss who gave Bama their only loss who gave Arkansas their only loss. Since it starts with an undefeated team and everybody else only has 1 loss, it's a defendable pecking order, and I used that for the SEC teams in my poll this week. LSU hasn't played any of them yet, so they can be placed anywhere in relation to the others.
Great point. It does seem to be logically inherent to rank them in that order just via the head-head games. I ranked Auburn at #7, then SCAR, Alabama and Arkansas, not back to back, but in relation to each other. My only issue was where I ranked Iowa in ahead of Arizona, I just can't justify ranking Arizona as high as I feel Iowa is.

Barner went down with what appeared to be a serious injury last night. That will be a huge loss for them.

Apparently, Thomas went out with a shoulder situation, but could have come back in if needed. Costa isn't a liability, but he's not the greatest. The thing that struck me was giving up 23 points to Wazzou. I don't know if I'll be able to defend the Oregon defense in any discussions throughout the remainder of the year after that.

I definitely feel for Barner. I really like that kid.

I did the same thing. I felt like Iowa played a better game that night, but totally screwed the pooch to start things out. Still, they dug themselves out of the hole and managed to tie it up. Neutral field, ten games, Iowa wins 8 of those at least.

scUM still ranked ???? 2 more weeks and then they are GONE!

Diego-Bucks;1789996; said:
Any reason they wouldn't be ranked still? They lost once so far, as many teams have. I put them in the #20-30 range or so. They could be ranked barely, or not ranked, barely. But its not blasphemous to have them in there still.

They still haven't done a single thing this year that they didn't do last year when they finished tied for last place in the Big Ten and failed to reach a bowl. They have beaten up on the poor sisters, barely escaped against Notre Dame, barely escaped against IU, and lost to MSU.

Actually, they at least kept it close against MSU last year and didn't struggle against a I-AA team, so one could argue that they are actually a bit WORSE so far than last season's last place team.

I haven't voted in a few weeks in the BP Poll, but I wouldn't have ranked them on any previous ballot if I were able to turn one in, and will not rank them when I submit my ballot this week.

OSU football: Tressel reacts to No.1 ranking
Sunday, October 10, 2010

Jim Tressel, who today became coach of the No.1-ranked college football team in the country, will appear live tonight at 8:15 Eastern on the debut edition of ESPN's BCS Countdown show.

The Buckeyes (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten) defeated Indiana 38-10 yesterday. The victory, coupled with then-No.1 Alabama's loss to South Carolina, lifted Ohio State to the top spots in the Harris, USA Today coaches and Associated Press polls.

"When you take a look at the Top 10 week to week, the precarious nature of any ranking is obvious -- just review the change in the makeup of the Top 10 between the beginning of the season until now," Tressel said. "The Buckeyes know what's it's like to have a target on our back, especially since we are now well into Big Ten play. We expect that every team will give us its best shot. How we respond will determine our ultimate ranking."

Other comments from Ohio State players on their No.1 ranking:

OL Bryant Browning: "It's a good feeling. Now we just have to work to have the chance to stay No. 1 the rest of the season. We will keep focused on each game and hope we're still up there in January."

DL Cameron Heyward: "The No. 1 ranking just means that more than ever, we're in control of our own destiny."

LB Ross Homan: "It's a good feeling to be No. 1, but it really doesn't change how we work. We still have to work hard every day and try to get better. We've just got a bigger target on us now."

QB Terrelle Pryor: "I love it for the Ohio State students and fans, but it's a big responsibility and opportunity for us. How we react to being No. 1, and how we stay determined in our focus and in our work habits, will tell us how long we will stay there."

LB Brian Rolle: "It's good to be No. 1, but if we don't play like it every week, then all the hype will be for naught."

RB Brandon Saine: "Maybe the polls have changed, but I don't feel much difference in our team than I felt last week. We still have to take it one game at a time and remain true to our goals."

WR Dane Sanzenbacher: "The top ranking is obviously a challenge we welcome, but we all know how much more important it is to be No. 1 at the end of the season."

It's hilarious how every single player interviewed sounds like a mini-Tressel. I think this team may be one of his best in terms of unity and maturity. They're certainly saying the right things, and all of the team leaders are quality guys.

Herbstreit ballot in: #Oregon at No.1, followed by #Oklahoma, #BoiseState, #TCU & #Auburn. #Buckeyes fall to 13. Agree or disagree?

Considering Miami (OSU's best victory) may not have been as good an opponent as we thought they'd be, I don't see any real reason to quibble over spots 10, 11, 12, 13 etc

Good point. Our one remaining shot at a signature win comes down to beating an Iowa team on the road that's put up wins against Wiscy and Sparty, which is why getting into the NC game as a one loss team is such a remote possibility.

As far as style goes, we need Iowa to beat everyone but us. Wiscy to beat everyone but Iowa. Miami to win out. Also, Northwestern closing strong and beating everyone but us wouldn't hurt--maybe not in voters' eyes but at least in the computers.

How would NW'ern winning out help tOSU in the computers, since tOSU plays almost all of NW'ern's opponents, but not NW'ern?
