2010 Big Ten-ACC Challenge

From a post on the last page of mine:

The fans had been on him and the Buckeye staff members on press row most of the game (anyone there like I was knows that the UM fans were quite full of themselves that day thinking they had OSU beat)... Upon the shot I noticed from my seat that Matta was emphatically yelling towards the UM bench. Afterwards, I asked my friend that was sitting on press row what was up and he said that Matta wanted a piece of some of those fans and was flaunting the win. He said he couldn't blame him based on some of the comments thrown the Buckeyes way the entire game, but nevertheless Thad wanted a piece of someone behind their bench. He was yelling about the basket being good and some expletives about where they could "stick" the shot...

Jeff Rapp was covering the game as a reporter & sitting right there. He said Matta was yelling at the refs to get them to count the basket (Matta's emphatic "count the basket" gestures supports that). I think your friend is sorely mistaken.

PS: why is a mod here posting negative rumors about Matta? I think it's odd that a mod is claiming that Matta was swearing at UM fans when he was clearly yelling at the refs.

Did I miss something? Since when does taunting scUM fans in any way reflect negatively on the one doing the taunting?

OK, just to make sure I've got it right--you have nothing to support your claim that Matta "wanted to go after UM fans" besides what some unnamed friend of yours said? No newspaper stories, no internet columns, nothing? If that's the case, (and again with all due respect), I think I wouldn't be claiming that Matta "wanted to go after UM fans" and/or attempting to lump him in the same category as Coach K based on such a spurious claim if I were you.

But I don't really have a problem with it... Was just curious if you were embarrassed by it since Coach K does that to you...

He was coaching and winning with emotion... I think that's the way coaches should be.

Above is my response 2 pages back for those thinking I'm disparaging Matta...

All sorts of fans from other fanbases were using it as some sort of evidence to show how Matta was classless, and I'm sure many of them had no evidence other than what they saw on TV. I don't think we should do anything other than say those rumors are untrue because because we should want a classy coach, even against our rival. There are a lot of Matta haters out there, and I don't want them to have anything like this to feed on, especially when it's not true.

If I were a mod on an OSU site, I sure would not post rumors about Matta's behavior that I've seen many Matta haters claim as evidence of him being classless, especially when there are conflicting reports on what he said.

I just reviewed the end of that game on my DVR - Matta walked briefly towards the center of the scorer's table and was looking straight ahead, then Ed Hightower grabbed him and turned him around and moved him back to the OSU bench - he literally was only speaking for a few seconds, so I really don't think there was any intended recipient of his message other than one of the refs, John Hughes, who was walking towards the scorers table along the sideline while the play developed. Hughes apparently had upset the OSU staff during the game. Just read Jeff Rapp's take on the outburst here, as he had a firsthand account from behind the OSU bench:

Does Duke get preferential treatment regarding foul shots given. You tell me. Here are the free throw numbers through eight games this season.

Opponent Duke
Home 31-57 89-120
Neutral 32-60 54-72
Away 18-30 19-27

Totals 81-147 162-219
% 55 74

One thing for sure is that Duke shots a higher percentage (made) than their opponents. I also don't have a clue how many free throws were awarded to Duke because the other team was behind and playing "catch up." Interesting that Duke has made more free throws for the year than the opponents have attempted......Hmmmm.....

I am not calling anyone out, but, who cares if opposing teams are calling Ohio State coaches any name? Of course the buggers will try to cast aspersions about Ohio State coaches! There are the names: $uckeye$, Tre$$el, etc. The spurious suggestions of money under the table and derogatory comments. They make non-stop comments about Ohio State players being shady, even when arrest records show that their players (e.g., Iowa, Penn State, Florida, etc) are arrested monthly or that their teams or conferences define shady (e.g., USC, the bloody entire SEC).

The truth is that the money is very much on the table. It is come by honestly and people in Central Ohio have built the largest university and college sports program in the United States. Ohio State is among the most respected academic and research institutions in the world. And, it does all that it does as a public research university, into which people from all walks of life can gain entrance, without Daddy Warbucks paying a massive private university toll.

Ohio State coaches take the knee in the final minute inside the five-yard line. They put the third string in when another team in hopelessly beat. Kids get in trouble everywhere, but Ohio State athletes are as unlikely to get in trouble as just about any university in America. They make excellent progress toward their degrees and are among the best athletes in America in their academic performance.

Ohio State sports administrators, coaches and players exude class. If fans of other teams want to make comments otherwise, then it is quite simple to objectively show that they are wrong and disregard their opinions.

Ok... So he was yelling at the refs to make sure that he got a certain call? Interesting. No coaches ever do that.... Must be embarrassing. :)

I've removed my other posts due to the sensitivity on here and due to the request from my friend who thought this outpouring was ridiculous. Didn't realize you guys were so defensive. And again, as I've now posted twice on here, I didn't have a problem with it and didn't ever feel I was attacking or defaming Matta...

Douche is beatable. I cannot [censored]ing stand Vitale...I shut the volume off. Irving went into the lane multiple times out of control and got calls...pathetic really. On a Nuetral court Sparty beats them last night.

Minnesota and Penn State didn't show up for their games. I have given both teams props but they looked like [censored] in the challenge. Penn State had 40 shot attempts to Marylands 16 in the first half and trailed by 6 at intermission... WTF!! They were ice cold. Minnesota blew a huge lead in the 2nd half.

Jimmy (I'm really a Dyke) Dykes ran his mouth on Tuesday saying the Big East is the best conference...Well [censored] genius they only have 3569707070 [censored]ing teams in their conference. Guys we can't win for losing.

Well, had to go back 5 [censored]ing pages to find something on topic, what I learned is that Duke fans STILL can't handle the heat. Overreacting to every criticism, freaking out whenever anyone dogs on their "precious" Dukies.

As if everyone isn't completely aware that home court is a HUGE advantage in college basketball in certain venues, like @Duke. The crowd gets into it, causes a ton of noise etc etc...it isn't the end of the world. And damn it all, I had hoped that on an Ohio State board we would have tOSU fans almost exclusively. But, the bandwagon covers a long stretch of road, so I suppose it shouldn't surprise me that it made it here.

From a blog written by Lee Caryer at BN regarding the pros and cons Ohio State's basketball schedule comes this little nugget which I thought was very appropriate for this thread:lol:

A ?can?t resist note? from 1976 -- Billy Packer, former Wake Forest guard and legendary ACC proponent, was preparing to announce the NCAA final game. While setting the stage for the upcoming contest between Indiana and Michigan, Packer was surprised on camera when Knight grabbed his shoulder and said, ?Where is the ACC now, Billy?? Knight went back to his team; I do not remember what Packer said.
