2010-2011 Men's Basketball (Outright Big Ten & BTT Champs)

I like how ESPiN pulled out the "No one is unbeatable" card AFTER the Golden Girls lost last night ...
Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, but I don't recall anyone trumpeting the likelihood of their going undefeated this season.

Like Duke or hate them, they've got a hell of a good team - though a lot less good with Kyrie Irving sitting on the pine with his foot in a cast. Ultimately, of all the teams in the US I think Kansas has the best chance of finishing the regular season loss-free. They're not the best team, IMO, but their schedule is the most conducive. (I.e., the Big 12 is much weaker than the ACC, Big East or Big Ten.)

ESPiN just started banging the drum actually...

I think ESPN was more trying to point out this season's ACC collapse than they were hyping the Devils. In fact, they posit that only 3 ACC teams may make the tourney. Katz says, in your link,
The Blue Devils aren't unbeatable. They have flaws, especially inside, but they don't dip against lower-level competition.
Whatever else Florida State may be, they're not "lower-level" competition. Leonard Hamilton has them playing phenomenal defense, and even for this bunch of bricklayers, their D will keep them in every game they play.

Ken Pomeroy's calculations agree with you.

Chances of finishing season undefeated:

10.8% - Kansas (projected 2 losses)
4.8% - Ohio St. (projected 3 losses)
1.4% - San Diego St. (projected 3 losses)
0.3% - Syracuse (projected 4 losses)

New uniforms in but on the shelf

The Buckeyes' new uniforms, with an Ohio State-themed design woven into the backs of the jerseys, arrived and might have made their debut today against Penn State.
But there were, as they say, "technical difficulties" with the Nike shipment, so the debut will come later this month.
"They got a couple numbers wrong," coach Thad Matta said.
"The funny thing is, I don?t know what numbers our players wear. I know Jared (Sullinger) wears 0, and (David) Lighty?s 23. But I?m like, it doesn?t matter to me if the players wore wrong-numbered jerseys."
It might matter to those responsible for putting correct rosters in the hands of fans, however.
So Ohio State is waiting for correctly numbered jerseys to be returned. The Buckeyes have two more January home games after today's, vs. Iowa on Wednesday and Purdue on Jan. 25.
Nike also is providing new shoes for the team, but they WILL NOT be part of the LeBron James line, director of basketball operations Dave Egelhoff said.
Bitter Cavaliers fans will be happy about that.

Strange to say this as we wait for them to be crowned #1 in the country, but this team has yet to meet the expectations I had earlier in the season.

They are good - for sure. But to become the elite program I saw glimpses of early on I would like to see more solid contributions from Smith and Sibert and more consistency from Thomas. A couple of cheap fouls on Sullinger and they are an off night by Buford or Diebler from being an average Big Ten team.

And they certainly are not playing like a Matta team in the last 10 minutes of recent games.

I am not saying this is who they are - only that this is how they are playing since the start of the Big Ten. We will find out in the next three games just how good they really are.

That said - WE'RE NUMBER ONE!!!!

No. Regardless of what happens with Buford's or Diebler's stroke, the Buckeyes are not an "average Big Ten team" under any circumstances. They're the best team in the league without question.

Frankly, there's a lot of talent on the bench (Sibert and Smith especially) that isn't getting off the pine in most games, that would be contributing mightily for any other team in the league.

I have to disagree with your statement that this team would not be average without Buford or Diebler. Buford provides much-needed rebounding and if he was not such an unselfish player is probably the best overall shooter on the team. JD is just an all around good player not to mention the best outside shooter on the team. When it came down to crunch time against PSU what side of the floor was Sullinger posting up on. You don't think a team would drop off of Sibert or Smith like they do Diebler and Buford.

You mentioned that we have a lot of talent on the bench and I would like to know how you know this when they have not seen many minutes at all this season and Smith wasn't even ready to play until just before the preseason started. They were very good high school players but have yet to prove themselves at the college level. I just don't understand how you can say they would contribute mightily to this team without even seeing them play. I think, and I hope, that Matta knows his players better than you because if he didn't we would not be undefeated right now.

This team has quite a bit of work to do including playing 40 minutes of defense and rebounding much better and concentrating more so they just do not make silly turnovers like they are doing.
