Hoops UPDATES From Thursday Interviews
[ Follow Ups ] [ O-Zone Forum ]
By BCast on 16:16:23 11/04/10

Lots of Updates from today, but I'll start with a health update.

- Matta said they are only practicing with 10 guys right now because of injury. Lenzelle Smith, Nicola Kecman and Eddie Days are all out with injuries.

- Matta said he expects Smith back in some capacity today and possibly in full capacity by Monday or Tuesday. Days won't be back until the middle of this month and Kecman is out until late Dec. or early January.

- William Buford suffered a thigh bruise and only played 15 minutes in the scrimmage Saturday, but he said he's fine.

- Matta said he hopes to go 9 deep out of the gates, with transfer Evan Ravenel being the only guy who is practicing right now who won't play. That means he doesn't expect J.D. Weatherspoon to redshirt, and in fact, Matta said he doesn't expect anyone to redshirt.

- David Lighty said he has been playing some point guard, some wing and some power forward so far and expects to do a little of all three.

I think Vitale got that one right on the money. Barnes is the best talent in the class and could well be most productive, but as far as productivity is concerned, Sullinger is right on his heels (and arguably more efficient). I think Jared will be more productive than any frosh Matta has ever had.

Not surprisingly, pretty wrong on Dickie V's part.

Harrsion Barnes is easily the best NBA prospect, but for next year in COLLEGE bball he is wrong. It just is what it is. LeBron wouldn't have averaged more that 24 a game in college. The game is so much different.

Sullinger has the advantage as an inside player being able to take advantage of all the softness currently in the college game. Harrison will be exciting, but you just wish the insiders understood the game a bit better and where the diaper-danddies would get their opportunities.

So are you saying that Barnes isn't going to be pretty productive this season at UNC? I agree that he's the most NBA ready in this class, but I'd also be willing to say that he'll probably be in the conversation for college basketball's best freshman at the end of the season. I expect Sullinger to be in that conversation as well, but I don't think Dickie V is way too far off having Barnes as his #1 "diaper dandy," especially with many sites having him as the #1 prospect in the class of 2010.

COACH AND PROGRAM

It seems almost ridiculous to say aloud at first, but after looking closely at Ohio State, it has to be asked.

Is it crazy to think the Buckeyes could be better this season without all-world superstar Evan Turner?

"I hope you're not crazy," coach Thad Matta responded, embracing at least the possibility of such a development. "I just don't know. I'm really looking forward to [fall practice] because there's just a lot I don't know yet."

Like, who will run the team and earn extra attention from defenses and make the clutch plays that need to be made. Turner was college basketball's most complete player last season, coming back from a scary December back injury to win the Wooden and Naismith awards while leading the Buckeyes to a piece of the Big Ten title and the Sweet Sixteen -- an NCAA run cut short by a heartbreaking loss to Tennessee, after which Turner left a year early for NBA riches.

He controlled the ball for Ohio State and usually did good things with it. That will be missed. But these Buckeyes have some assets those Buckeyes didn't have. Like a space-eating, ultra-skilled big man who should demand double teams in 6-9, 280-pound freshman Jared Sullinger.

Like depth, which hasn't been an OSU trait in a few years.

Ohio State Buckeyes
Last Season 29-8 (.784)
Conference Record 14-4 (t-1st)
Starters Lost/Returning 1/4
Coach Thad Matta (Butler '90)
Record At School 156-54 (6 years)
Career Record 258-85 (10 years)
RPI Last 5 years 9-1-34-35-20

"Yeah, that's a little bit different, isn't it?" Matta said of having a filled-out roster. "A lot of those guys are young, but a core of them have played together for a long time."

Yes, Turner may be gone, but last year's other four starters are back, and all are talented veterans who have played a lot of high-level basketball for the Buckeyes. Senior guards David Lighty and Jon Diebler, senior big man Dallas Lauderdale and junior wing William Buford -- who seems destined for a starring role this season -- are known and very valuable commodities.

"We have a good feel for those four guys and what they can do for us," Matta said. "You just can't replace experience."

It's already winter up here so that's not too bad of an idea. The Big 10/ACC challenge game was probably set up by the conferences and not the individual schools. The game against Florida was probably just set up so we can give them a good bashing:2004:

I think we owe Florida a return trip from 2 years ago, and the FSU thing was set up by the conferences/espn. I know the baseball team spends 2-3 weeks down here, and plays a couple games like a mile form my house at Santaluces HS, but still kinda wierd.

OSU does not owe Florida a home game. This game is part of the Global Sports event, but OSU will get a return game from Florida next season. It's early, but the sched for '11-12 looks like the big OOC games will be @ SCarolina, @ Kansas, vs. UF and vs. ACC team TBD.
