2010-2011 Men's Basketball (Outright Big Ten & BTT Champs)

A lot of this is going to depend on how this team grows over the year. We're going to (hopefully) see a very different bunch in March than we do in November. How different is what none of us know. There are lots of great pieces -- let's see how Matta puts them together.

That's a good point. I definitely remember having too high expectations for the Thad 5 at the begining of the season. They were very raw and made a lot of frustrating mistakes. When guys have so much hype coming in, it is easy to forget that they are stilll freshmen. Most of those were gone by March though. One thing we can usually count on Coach to do is to have the guys playing better in Feb and Mar than they were in Dec.

I'm just a bit hesitant to think that we can make it to the final four. I think everyone will agree that in order to make a deep run, you have to get good play ouf of your point guard. If you can't get penetration, and can't take care of the ball it makes it very difficult to compete at the highest level. At this point we don't have a solid point guard. We had to make ET our point guard last year because no one could handle the responsibility.

It was very refreshing to hear southcampus refer to Aaron Craft playing well. I really think that could be the key to this team. Obviously we have plenty of talent and physical ability at all of the other positions. The fact that he is a true freshman is another reason for pause, but it has been done before (conley). It also sounds like those guys (craft and conley) practiced together quite a bit this summer, so maybe Craft was able to pick his brain a bit.
Everyone seems to be worrying about the PG position but everything that I have read, including statements from TM, I think that Craft will fill the bill at PG. We have so many other guys who can score I am just not concerned about the PG position. Also, as Brutus mention above, it is only the beginning of the season and we have until March before the madness begins. I am sure that Matta will have that position figured out by that time.

I can remember when Matta was at X and took his team to the Elite 8. He had three guys who were in the 6'4"-6'5" range and did not have what I would call a true PG but they seem to manage to win quite a bit that season and I would expect no less from the Buckeyes this season.

... ON KEEPING THE TEAM LOOSE: "Everybody's been asking me how do you replace Evan Turner. I'm not concerned about replacing Evan; I'm concerned about replacing Mark Titus. I always tell our players to use this opportunity at Ohio State to help yourself be successful for the rest of your life. I think Mark did that. He was in the gym the other day watching practice. It's always good for me to see him, because he makes me laugh like nobody I've ever met."

No.4 nationally and other media day morsels

I used most of my time at Big Ten media day today to gather material for some feature stories down the road, but there were some timely things I wanted to get on the blog before I head for O'Hare and home:

- Jon Diebler said the Buckeyes have a "long ways to go" before they can fulfill predictions that they will finish second in the Big Ten to Michigan State and fourth nationally, which is where they were in the Associated Press preseason poll released today.

Where, I asked Diebler, are they farther behind than he would like to see them with the season opener two weeks away?

"We really have to improve on the defensive end . . . just our overall team defense, because that?s what makes teams great is when all five guys are on the same page defensively," he said.

Welcome To Ohio State 2010-11 Basketball
Written by admin
Posted November 1, 2010 a

Welcome to another year of Ohio State Basketball. As you can see, I have a made a few but minor changes to the design of the site. The biggest change is the web link. Instead of Buckeyefastbreak.com, you will be able to connect to the site via Ronstokesfastbreak.com. As always we thank our great sponsor WOW! Internet Cable and Phone. Without them, this site would not be possible.

I had the opportunity to watch this year?s team, practice on several occasions over the last few weeks. My immediate take away is that there is a blend of experience and flat out raw talent. The two most popular questions that were asked of me by fans were: who will handle the point guard duties now that Evan Turner is gone; and who would the starting five consist of. I will answer both questions with one answer. I believe that Coach Matta will go with the three seniors, William Buford and Jared Sullinger, which would put David Lighty at the point for now.

Although David Lighty has rarely played this position at the college level, he did play quite a bit during his high school career at Villa Angela-St. Joseph. I know, I know? high school is different from college, but keep in mind that Matta has done an outstanding job in putting players in certain positions to succeed.

Back in the fall of 2006, I thought that Jamar Butler -after coming off a sophomore season when he was third team ?All Big Ten? ? would be the starting point guard instead of Michael Conley Jr. Boy was I wrong. There were doubters on whether a turnover prone Evan Turner could adequately lead a team. A Big Ten regular and tournament championship plus a Naismith Player of the year honor later, again proved that Thad knows his players? potential better than anyone.

Remember that there are two ends of the floor and what Ohio State may lack offensively at the point position, could be made up with their defense. Jon Diebler, Lighty, and William Buford are all 6-5 or taller. That length on the perimeter, alongside Dallas Lauderdale who led the Big Ten in Blocks could be very intimidating. Oh, by the way, Sullinger will be in the middle taking up space as well.

I saw Sullinger on an All American list as a first teamer also. With all the
one and done's you knew sooner or later they were going to start putting a Freshman on the pre-season list.

Wasn't sure where else to post this...the second one is a great read by Ari.

Montserrat basketball team complete Ohio camp

BRADES, Montserrat The LIME Montserrat Volcanics Basketball team is wrapping up a successful one week tour of Ohio. The team was chosen after the one week summer Reach One, Teach One - Building Bridges to Success camp organized by the Warren Cassell Foundation Inc. held in August. The coaches were David Shoemaker and Jeff Anderson of Ohio.

The members of the team are: Holren Bobb, Gilmore Williams, Jamaul Wade, Jairam Fenton, Julius Morris, Juilius Fergus, Kamran Cabey, Vachel Murrain, Sherandy Fenton and Phillip Brade.

In preparation for the tour the team engaged in two months of intense preparation lead by local coach George Green of the Montserrat Basketball Association. Coach Shoemaker said it is evident that Green did a tremendous job working with the players using the drills that were sent to him from Ohio. He went on to say that "Coach Green's understanding of basketball is a major asset to the development of the sport on the island".

Free Rivals - Building through basketball

Ari Wasserman
Staff Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio - It was the little things that stood out to Jamaul Wade just minutes after arriving in the United States for the first time on Oct. 20.

It wasn't the airplane he got off moments earlier, it wasn't the cars or the noise they made, nor was it the traffic lights that illuminated a steady glow into the dark night sky.

"It was the size of the streets. They were huge," Wade said with a vibrant smile. "The length of the road. It was so long. I had never experienced anything like that before."

Coming to this country from the island of Montserrat - a tiny British colony in the Caribbean 200 miles southeast of Puerto Rico that spans just 39 square miles and has a population of less than 6,000 people - Wade and the rest of the Monsterrat's national basketball team hadn't experienced much of what they would be exposed to in the coming days.

It was the type of experience Montserrat coach Dave Shoemaker had envisioned for his players when he took it upon himself to help the country's youth learn the game of basketball in effort to get kids back into organized sports after the Soufriere Hills Volcano destroyed a large portion of the island in 1995.

Roughly 15 years since the volcano erupted - leaving the southern half of the country uninhabitable - Shoemaker returned to the island he first visited just 36 hours before the eruption occurred.

I didn't see the answer in this thread (may have just looked over it), but does anyone know if any TV stations will be carrying the season opener against NC A&T? I know ESPN3 is supposed to carry the game, but I haven't heard of anyone else televising it.

On the ESPN3 page it says (Exclusive) so I'm going to guess they are the only one carrying it.

the game on the 23rd against Morehead State is also supposed to be on ESPN3:evil:

I don't know if a local station like WBNS in Columbus can pick it up or not but I would think if it says exclusive that means we won't be seeing it on the television:(

Crap!:mad2:

Oh well, I guess if we have to miss some games, may as well be against NC A&T and Morehead State. The bench players should get a good majority of playing time in the second half of those games anyway.
