2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

I really love the circuitousness of the "spread offense = no head injuries" line of thinking. Somehow putting your quarterback out in the open where the big mean men can light him up is better than having him behind blockers? I mean, even with scUM's horrible line that's a ridiculous argument. Tate's shiftiness is going to keep him safe in the open field? Please explain to me how he could even remotely compare to McGuffie's shiftiness. McGuffie, for all of his short comings, was both significantly larger and stronger than Tate AND he had moves on top of moves - and he got absolutely crushed. Tate is neither as shifty as McGuffie nor as fast. How can this possibly end well for them? I can't wait for the season to start. I have a feeling scUM is going to be inexplicably worse than last year.

:oh:

Seriously, what would you guess he is? 5'10 or 5'11 and 175? I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison of Tater and Sanz...

this isn't the best side by side, but I'd say Mr. Forcier makes 6'0" 206 lbs. Carlos Brown look pretty damn large by comparison

Tate has also struggled with the strain on his arm during practices, and that was while splitting reps with the other QBs. Threet is gone, and the other two are rumored to be injured. Carlos Brown, Vincent Smith & Terrance Robinson can run the ball, but can they pass the ball for the sake of the receivers?

I'm sure that's sarcasm, but for the sake of others, those are Carlos' official measurements, minus 3 lbs.

I think 5'10"ish & 170ish looks about right.

I want to see their defense...fuck the offense. I already know their offense will struggle. They keep holding out hope their offense will be better but they rarely talk about defense. The defense actually kept them in a few games for a half/3 quarters last year and this year they will not even have that. This could be a devastating year for Michigan. The one thing they can hang their hat on is an easier schedule. I see no more than 5 wins.

Slight of build young freshman qb + suspect OL + offense designed for QB to carry the ball 10-15 times a game = more red flags than a Chineese Army parade.

The best part is, even if he manages to stay healthy, he still a true freshman. Then they need him to be exceptionally effective to have any chance at a decent season but there is very little talent around him and the defense will be worse than it was last year, especially early.

from that youtube clip it looks like the Michigan secondary is continuing its fine tradition of sucking ass, they were doing a hoot and holler type drill and the running back wasn't tackled about half the time and wasn't touched about a fourth of the time

FIFY. That doesn't include passing plays, pitches to the RB, etc.

They continued to struggle containing the ballcarrier (Troy, Vince, Ted, Edwards, Jackson, about 20 oregon ducks, etc) even with two sidelines :p

Michigan gave up nearly 29 points a game last year. The only real good player Michigan has on the d line is Graham. Linebackers will be ok with Mouton, Evans, and Ezeh. The defensive backs could be a problem. Stevie Brown will probably be amazing in the spring and then look lost in the fall. The secondary will be young this fall. On paper the defense looks worse from last year unless the young guys step up.

I think games where you could chalk up loses are Notre Dame, Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State, Ill, Purdue, Wisconsin, and OSU.

They could win against Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Delaware State, and Indiana. I wouldn't be surprised if Western Michigan wins the opening game of the season. For Michigan I'm looking at another 3-9 or 4-8 season. They will probably go 1-7 or 2-6 in the big ten.

Solid breakdown, zwem. I can see them winning 5-6 games, maybe 7 if their edge in overall talent actually translates over lower big ten teams. Obviously it could be worse with the QB situation, especially if injury strikes (even as simple as being nicked up while still playing), but the schedule is pretty easy next season.

What I don't understand are the fans who feel 6-6 or 7-5 will be a good season. I understand fans being patient with RR. Between loyalty, personnel & what happens if he fails, I get that they'll give him time. But I don't understand praising the mediocrity until it gets turned around.

This is Michigan. For as much as we like to rag on them, they've recruited well enough to field a solid defense, and even at their lowest point they still dwarf Iowa, Purdue, MSU & Wisconsin in talent.

the magic of lowered expectations, you can talk shit all you want prior to games and when you get beat you can just shrug it off and say "ehhh, we suck, what did you expect"

pretty pathetic and annoying strategy (especially the 1 time out of 10 that the team happens to win), but hey, you work with what you got I suppose

I'm just trying to be real here. Anybody with any common sense would know Michigan is going to struggle this year. I really hope they prove me wrong and they could win 7-8 games and go to a bowl game but I'm just not seeing it. I will be the first to admit I was wrong if they do that and would have no problem owning up to it. I would love to see it happen. I love Michigan football and have ever since I was a little kid. I will stick by them if they go 0-12 or 12-0. I'm a realistic person and I'm not going to pretend this team is going 9-3 and going to light up the big ten. So I get bashed because I think Michigan will win 4 games this year. I would probably get bashed if I predict Michigan will win 7 games. Kind of funny if you ask me.

Forcier should be OK for a few reasons.
First: if the offense is competent and unpredictable this year, opponents won't have direct angles to hit him as often as they would with a predictable offense.
Second: his mobility and shiftiness should allow him to further avoid direct contact.
Third: This probably matters the least of any of my reasons, but Anthony Carter, Jamie Morris, and BC's Doug Flutie were all small and managed to avoid a lot of injuries.
Being small does not guarantee injuries; I see it as neutral. McGuffie took too many direct hits last year because he wasn't smart enough to avoid them; he thought he was Superman and didn't realize that he wasn't until it was too late.
What a moron.

Dear U-M fans,

Steve Slaton and Pat White were as quick and agile as any college athletes ever have been. Neither one ever got past Week 8 of any season without suffering a significant injury. It's not the players, it's the system that exposes them to increased risks.

You are correct that Doug Flutie was small and avoided injuries. That's probably because he didn't run the ball 35 times a game.

Fucking morons.
