2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

except there was hardly a flash before the NFL.

Folks threw at true frosh Warren in 07, which folks misunderstood as a big step forward for trent. Hartline smoked Trent on the first drive, Boeckman underthrew it, and they didn't patch much more after that.

The next year (08), when teams stopped throwing at the no-longer freshman, his ability was shown again.

I agree Trent did not take a huge step forward in 07, but he was solid most of the year. He was consistently going up against the opponents best WR's and he did not give up many big plays if I recall. Jwinslow, you also have to remember that 07 was Trent's only year of good coaching. If you recall Vance Bedford who is currently the Db's coach at Florida was coaching Trent before he was let go by RR.

I like that example better.

That is true. It's just hard to judge him when he was hardly tested in The Game due to weather/gameplan, and got beat badly one of the few times they tested him.

It's no coincidence either that Iowa suddenly has some WR talent with Soup Campbell out there. The funny part is his split ends were excellent blockers, and that wasn't even a strongsuit of the new coaching.

Hermann & Deboard might have been pretty unpopular, but the above two were big losses, and they only retained Jackson who was one of the more replaceable coaches imo (by position).

Let the winning begin.

Indeed...

Sounds familiar?

Wolverines get commitment from Maryland defender Josh Furman | freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Weighing just under 200 pounds, Furman will need to add bulk to his frame before he is capable of lining up in the Wolverines' defense, but his 4.36 40-yard dash speed and 40-inch vertical leap attest to his explosiveness.

I will say that they are addressing the defensive side of the ball, particularly if they land Hankins (though that seems unlikely when GBW serves as the official 'trash the character & humanity of the coach of a kid we hope comes' board). Until they flipped Ash, there was still a serious lack of beef up front. Now the question is whether he will qualify.

I wish Rich would have kept Campbell and Bedord them, but Dews is growing on me. He is the best recruiter on this staff and the wideouts do block downfield, I will wait another year before I write him off. As for gibson... he needs to be coaching special teams or demoted to recruiting coordinator

It's going to be interesting to see how they use wideouts next year, particularly if Tate returns as an experienced starter. So far RR inherited Stonum and had a legacy in Ricardo, but he needs to utilize that talent for more than blocking or misdirection passes.

Will they develop into weapons in this offense? Or will Stonum still have to wait for kickoffs to get the football? Outside of MSU & ND's atrocious defenses, Stonum caught 0, 1, DNP, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, DNP, 1 passes in each game.

Which is exactly what we told Michigan fans to expect in this offense. The flankers and split-ends are used for blocking and running clearing routes for the slot-dots.

I see no reason why this would change now.

For as many wideouts as we recruit none of them have the speed to get over the top of coverage. Stonum has that ability, but he barely played at the end of the season im surprised he has not transferred to be honest.
