2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

Well, the good news if there is any is for those idiots is that the 2-3 DL they're getting are not exactly chopped liver.

The bad news is that behind the DL come the LBs. They are looking at signing one LB.

I believe the new DL may be switching to a 2-1-8 to slow down other spread teams.

Scout $

QB/ATH Denard Robinson and teammate CB Adrien Witty have committed to Michigan.

Washington & the Deerfield trio will be cause for partying, but the DT concerns are still a problem.

Also interesting that GBW made no mention of the pitch to be the next Pat White

Well Campbell and Roh are studs. IMO Roh is the best player they signed. He looked great in the AAA game. Is Lolata an OL or DL??? He didn't impress me one bit.

They have Roh, Campbell, Lolata, Martin, and Graham??? Who else? My friend you better have 8-9 DL on that rotation. They have had transfers, players not make it academically, and players jut plain quit. Hell you would need a degree in statistics just to figure out whos still on their team. Like OH8CH said they only signed 1 LB'er. They will tell you Bell will be a LB'er but he is not physically ready. They lost 2 Lb'ers from last years class. Thats 3 LB'ers in 2 recruiting years...not good. Then they will tell you they will run a 3-4. Thats great but you need linebackers for that. 200-210 lbs linebackers in the B10 is not a great idea.

They are fucked and IMO their logical fans know it. Instead of recruiting 10 RB's,10Wr's, and 9 safeties in the past 2 years they should have gotten linebackers and DL that were gonna make it.

DeQuinta Jones, long-time soft "verbal" to UM has signed with Arkansas. Both DT soft-verbals gone, though they retained their "decommitment" (Campbell, on campus already).

You don't recall correctly, and you forget Ferrara, who probably moves back now that the OL depth is shored up. So that's 11, which is only two shy of the 13 that you guys have (by my count.)
So is this where you argue numbers - and use that to try and compare to OSU - rather than address the actual issue? Or do you feel good about the DT situation?

Graham is good but has 1 year left.
Martin was an effective 4-3 DT, will even play there if RR finally gets his 3-3-5 stack?
Kates, Sagesse, Patterson and Banks are journeymen.
Van Bergen might be decent but he'd be better backup material than a starter.

Roh is a nice pickup, but may need to spend a year bulking up.
Lalota is neither a good DL nor a DL, imo.
Campbell is talented but needs a lot of work on his consistency and conditioning.

What part of that unit leaves you feeling good?

I'm sure if you take walk-on into consideration OSU probably has more than 13 DL but I haven't checked.
Again: It helps to check. Make sure you keep track of things you say before throwing a hissy fit, OK?

Good for Scout, having Ferrara as an OL. Of course, the official roster also has him as OL, but that's because they list last year's roster. I still think Ferrara will move back.

jwins - sorry - your post was the last one on the last page and I missed it. We'll have to wait and see about 2010. For this coming year, the four starters look very good. Graham and Van Bergen on the ends and Martin and Campbell in the middle. That's where I get my optimism for the unit. The depth is a bit thin. Campbell is a freshman so he'll probably jump offsides at the absolute worst time at least once. Van Bergen is better than you think (I believe) but not like Graham. Campbell is enrolled early and going through offseason conditioning so he'll show up to fall camp in better shape than most true freshmen. Guess I'm more optimistic about LaLota than you are.

Why do you feel RVB is better than I think? I'm not putting him in the same group as most of the DL backups, but I see a weakness there. Campbell shows a lot of the same weaknesses as past UM Dts, and I have a hard time assuming things will be different until we see otherwise.

Then there's the elephant in the room about whether we'll actually see a three man front or whether the 3-3-5 will return. That hurts Martin, imo, and possibly RVB.
