2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

JS: There have been a lot of players who have said the values that were there under Lloyd Carr aren?t there under Rich Rodriguez. What values are you referring to?

TC: Well, the main difference for me, value-wise was with coach Carr (and his staff), they were like father figures, you know? They really raised you to be a man, they got you right, got you living right both on and off the field. When I talk about values, that?s what I?m talking about. I can talk to coach Carr now and get fatherly advice, same with (former Michigan wide receivers coach) Eric Campbell. They really teach you how to grow up. I can?t really compare my meaning of values to what other players have said, but for me, it just meant they really cared for you as a person?you came in the program as a boy, and they were going to make you a man. That?s something they stressed to parents, ?we?re going to raise your son, he?s going to be a great man as well as a great player.? That?s just something that they stressed and that was the difference for me. I just didn?t really see it as much in the new system, there were just different philosophies in the system. It was more than just a coaching change, it was a lifestyle change as well. That was the difference for me.

Did Beaver erase his history yet?

Since I am working from home today (bad cold), I had ESPN on for some background noise.

College Football Live is on, and they are covering Michigan today for their "50 State Tour" of the country.

I had to smile when the talking heads said that it will be at least another couple of seasons, or a new head coach, before scUM will be able to beat OSU.

I know, it is ESPN. But, it is still fun to hear that even these idiots can see through the BS that is is being passed off as football at scUM these days.

Since it is the off season we have to wait a while to beat Catholepistemiad on the field. So we have to be innovative in showing just how much they are struggling off of it.

As always, I grant that individual recruiting rankings are suspect. However, as you look at groups of recruits they begin to tell a story. So as they celebrate "picking up the (Christian) Pace" let's try this perspective on how well their recruiting is going.

First let's look at how OSU has done the past two years based on where their recruits were ranked by Scout within their position groups (a look that goes a bit deeper than mere star rankings).

In 2009, from highest to lowest, it was as follows: 1-2-3-5-5-8-8-9-9-10-10-10-11-12-14-16-23-26-27-32-38-42-45-46-53

So far in 2010 it is:
2-3-6-40-52

For Catholepistemiad -
2009:
3-6-8-10-11-15-15-16-17-19-20-33-42-44-45-46-49-49-82-102-115-NR

And in 2010:
6-10-19-36-55-57-58-66-77-105-126-NR

Any of the mathematicians on the board picking up a trend here?

Anyone still concerned that we aren't garnering verbals at the same rate as the folks up North?

IMO we have several recruits that are gonna skyrocket up the charts. Roderick Smith will be a 5* before its over. OSU and Notre Dame are the only schools with a 4.0 or higher rating at this point. Michigan is around 3.2 and will probably drop.

Never was. This is going to be a small class, always was so the staff is taking their time with the offers. We don't need this to be a loaded class after the talent we've loaded up on in the past two classes and the staff is acting accordingly by taking their time and plugging holes.

scUM, on the other hand, has holes all over the place to fill and are filling them with recruits that would otherwise (mostly) be going to lower tier Big-Ten Big-12, Southern schools or the Big East and in some cases, less than that (MAC). The difference in strategies is astounding. I understand why DickRod doesn't necessarily need to load up on blue chip players for his skill positions due to the scheme they run, but going after so many sleepers/projects on defense boggles my mind. Hell, you'd think the m*ch*g*n name would allow him to get more blue-chip kids to play RB and WR. They have some nice gets there, but come on.

One of those commits may very well not be a part of this class. I agree, I don't see how Smith won't be a 5* by the time NLOID rolls around. But as his stock climbs, so will the offers. He says he's all OSU, but I never count anybody in until they actually confirm it. Until then, they're still "single and looking". I'm a little surprised at the low number of recruits committed thus far (particularly after how fast we loaded up the past couple years), but I understand the strategy. scUM has floated so many offers, they've told a kid (a lowly rated one) to hold off and look around. That strategy will end up biting them in the ass.

Never was because I keep this simple fact in mind: No matter the rankings, our recruits will be coached and developed by Jim Patrick Tressel for the next 4 years. Their recruits will not. Advantage OSU....big time.
