2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

I couldn't help but snicker when I read this. If you do not feel too great about winning this year (I agree with you there), next year will be even more daunting with most of the team back and playing in the shoe. The only way I see Michigan having a chance next year is if Tater blows up this year. I'm not betting the mortgage on that.

I could see Tater getting blown up this year. Heck, I would pay good money to see that. I might even watch a couple games (PSU, MSU, OSU) who might be the ones that bake the Tater. I heard a story in school from a navy guy about a port visit to the far east. There was a shriveled up old man who man his living getting hit with a 2x4. The sailors would pay money to whack the guy and see if they would be the ones to break him. For some reason that story comes to mind here...

For some reason I thought this was funny.

Anyways.....the buckeyes "should" run this streak to at least 7 games. I just don't see Michigan winning this year due to the talent difference and where both programs are at right now.

An old friend of mine, a tsun season ticket holder mind you, and I were talking the other day. He agrees... '09 & '10 are basically out of the question (his words, not mine... altho I agree  ) '11 is the next foreseeable chance... but that's just because there is so little information about those who will be on the field in '11...

Personally, I do not envy the position that your program is in. At least when we were in the Cooper years we fielded good teams who disappointed on occasion... which is a stark contrast to that which is going on at Stadium and Main...

A lot will be told about their future this year. DickRod will eventually have a very solid offense there. If Tater can stay healthy this year, they could make strides...but that's a BIG if. His entire offense has always revolved around QB play. I don't know if tater is the answer or not. He appears to have the arm and intangibles, but he's puny and DR's offense has always had a tendency to get his QB banged up. If tater gets hurt and they have to turn to Sheridan again or a very raw Denard Robinson...look out below. Devin Gardner is the guy who, as a tOSU fan, worries me in his system. He's raw, but his skills are off the chart. The thing is, if they tank again this year, you gotta think DR will begin to feel some real pressure and will probably have to turn it over to Gardner in '10, which means his fate may very well be in the hands of a raw true frosh QB.

The flip side to all of this is the defense. Robinson has a strong DC resume, but right now lacks the personel to field a strong defense. As of this moment, it doesn't appear their recruiting philosophy is really addressing their major weaknesses. That's the thing to watch for this recruiting season. If they can't field top rate defenses, they will struggle in the Big-Ten. History bears that out. Teams that dominate the conference traditionally do so with very good to great defenses.

If his offense shows significant progress and they start landing some blue chip defensive recruits, THE GAME in '10 may actually be pretty competitive. That will also depend on if they develop those guys in time to at least neutralize TP in his junior season. Will be interesting to watch...

Fact is - as a Head Coach, RR has the following average W-L record:
6.75 - 4.43

If you do not include seasons where he had Pat White at QB, it is:
5.85 - 5.08

Using just his time at D-I schools, it is:
7.88 - 2.69

Using time at D-I schools, with some other QB than Pat White:
5.6 - 6.0

If you add his time coaching Shaun King and Woody Dantlzer he improves to:
7.1 - 4.21 (Aided signifigantly by Tulane's 12-0 in 1998)

Using his being a coach at a school in any capacity, but without Pat White:
6.47 - 4.65
...........

Thus, unless any of the "savior" QBs are as good as Pat White, I think it's reasonable to expect 8-4 type seasons out of any RR club. I say this because his "mediocrity" with something other than a superior athelete at QB spans multiple levels and multiple programs.

Even if any of these "saviors" are a Pat White like talent, over the long term, RR has proven to be a slightly above .500 coach... (.596, to be exact... (.527 without Pat White, btw))

8-4 Might be good enough for Michigan... I don't know... I'm just glad he's not at Ohio State.

But you fail to account for the recruits he will bring in now that he is at a big time program.:scum4:

I think Threet was always seen as a bridge. I think the progression over the past couple years has been something along these lines:
Mallett (Arky) > Sheppard (LSU) > Newsome (PSU) > Beaver (Tulsa!) > Tater (?) > Gardner...

And they are ALL > Pryor, remember?

They will only have a decent chance in '11 if TP goes early to the NFL.

JT, seriously, could put a 10 spot on them. I will start worrying abut them when I see a super stout front seven on defense like they always used to have under Bo.

Agree. It's fun to make fun of RR, but if given time I think he'll eventually have at least a good or possibly very good offense. Still, like said, it's hard to find the elite players like White to guide that offense and make it great and without a great offense he may have a hard time winning the B10.

I'm sure the UM fans aren't going to want to turn into a Purdue (of earlier years), or other B10 team that has a good offense, but doesn't fair well on D.

It depends. If they improve by a large margin on offense and get some stud recruits, they should be close to a 9 or 10 win team, but still they will ahve some big flaws like defensive depth and QB youth.

I have a difficult time seeing Tate do really well though. They may (and probably will) improve on offense, but with a true frosh paving the way and a good, but not amazing RB in the backfield, I have a hard time seeing them average more than 25 ppg, if that. Pryor, while not the passer that Tate was out of HS, is far far superior to him athletically and still struggled at times. Tate will show good thigns here and there, but I think UM fans are fooling themselves if they expect more than 1500-2000yds and 14tds and 10 ints. Those may be low, but I think UM fans should be happy witht hat.

Another deflection (RS freshman..OL Wermers) ...and RR sez possibly more to follow.
Wermers, #11 OG per scout (#37 rivals). Benchwarmer. Leaving because he's buried on the depth chart and he wanted to pursue a real education (kept from leaving the 'easy path', or so it is claimed).

It will be interesting to see who the 'more' turn out to be, if anyone. Brandon Smith, blue-chip safety landed in Jan after RR took over, was moved to LB this spring and wasn't thrilled about it. He's a potential name there.
