I can buy the changing systems hurting their ability to be a strong defense. I just don't buy it prevents them from fielding a defense altogether, when tackling, pursuit angles and basic fundamentals continue to plague the UM defense. They may not have great depth, but they still have far more talent on their roster than most of their opponents, including little brother.

MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern... these teams rarely field one player with the talent of a Terrance Taylor, let alone a Graham, Warren, Cissoko, Turner, etc.
In fairlness, I'm interested to see how well, if at all, Robinson can correct or atleast improve these problems by September. He's only been on the job a brief time and is, by most accounts, an excellent DC. How much power he has and how much is delegated to his (or DR's depending on how you look at it) deputies has a play in this.

Here's an interesting breakdown by ErocWolverine on S&M of their lack of depth...

Re: UofM LB's need or want?

Well first off there is two linebacker positions (both inside) along with a spinner position that is a cross between a defensive end and a linebacker and then the hybrid position that is a cross between a safety and a linebacker. That is something people need to understand that players like Hawthorne, Herron, Jones, Evans, Kinard will not play inside linebacker.

In the spring they had 3 healthy schollie for the linebacker position (Fitzgerald, Obi, and Demens). Mouton was out. They had 3 walk-ons and that was it for that position. That is not good especially for two spots on the defense.

M. Robinson will play safety at Michigan especially with the depth issues that Michigan has or will have there when he arrives. Anyway if he would move it would be to S. Brown position as a hybrid, but we already have two young players there in Jones and Hawthorne.

Herron plays the spinner position.

Evans plays the spinner position.

Hawthorne plays the hybrid position.

Jones plays the hybrid position.

Bell not really sure where he plays ... I would like to see him at linebacker, but they might try him at safety first especially with depth issues.

B. Smith moving to linebacker will help, but hard to count on a kid especially since he only played the position a couple of practices so far.

Kinard will play either defensive end or spinner ... imo.

We have 5 players for 2 spots on the defense now ... Mouton (who is injuried), Obi, Fitzgerald, B. Smith, Demens, ... maybe Bell. That is not good depth let alone good quality depth for two positions on defense.

Eroc is one of a handful of very objective posters over there for those unfamiliar with him. Doesn't paint a pretty picture at all. I'm still curious to see how well a defense like that can handle some of the power running teams in the Big-10. I'm not convinced running that as a base package (particularly with their depth issues) is such a good idea.

This is true, I'm certainly not writing his coaching off yet. But it's about time some of those veterans learned to become solid defenders, even if good to great is out of the question. Stevie Brown is a perfect example of this.

The problems that RR and UM are facing right now with depth issues can lead you back to Lloyd and his pitiful recruiting classes of 2005 and 2006. There are a couple guys in each of those classes that have panned out alright, but for the most part, those two classes were utter failures.

After what he did to Ntre Ame, TSUN was foolish to put their recruiting for those years in the hands of Ty Willingham.

Interesting mantioning ND...despite their putrid record the past couple years, Weis continues to bring in top-flight recruits and has since taking the job. Many scUM fans say DR needs time to build inroads in the midwest and Ohio in particular. Weis came right in and immediately brought in top offensive and defensive players with no college coaching resume. Developing them, of course, is another story. When a name coach takes a job at a name university, that should take care of itself. That excuse is a red herring.

3 defensive coordinators in 3 years doesn't help your defense at all. Thats has to be some of the problem.
It certainly has. One has to wonder if DR learned his lesson last year by meddling too much on the defensive side of the ball. Schafer was never given a proper chance. If he leaves Robinson to his own devices, he may turn them around in a couple of years. That of course assumes he's given the time.

Rumors of a commit from D.C. LB Javarie Johnson. Reported by Lichtenfels on GBW:
Scout.com: GoBlueWolverine.com Victors Club

Then refuted by Johnson himself:
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=162&f=1088&t=4238743

Leaked by Johnson's coach supposedly. If true, it's another LB, which is a start, he held offers from UConn, Illinois (), Iowa, Maryland, MSU, NC St., New Mexico and wvu. A step in the right direction, but looks like a project and again, the type of guy wvu would go after, not necessarily a "top program" like tsun.

Sounds like this is a case of scout being scout. They must get their "journalistic integrity" from Herbstreit.

I will add that Taurian Washington and James Jackosn could come back and nip them in the ass...but Pryor was the big fish that THAT GOT AWAY...Game...Set...Match. Pryor has the chance to beat Michigan 4 times and if he stays 4 years he will do it. I don't care about your excuses about your program being down because thats lame as hell.

Ohio State has a legit shot at getting 4-5 5* this year and thats with the current ranking. OSU will have a top 5 class.

I'm not concerned with Washington but I think Jackson could be a really good one for you guys.

Beating your rival 4 straight times is impressive regardless if they are 11-0 or 2-9.
