2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

I will add that Taurian Washington and James Jackosn could come back and nip them in the ass...but Pryor was the big fish that THAT GOT AWAY...Game...Set...Match. Pryor has the chance to beat Michigan 4 times and if he stays 4 years he will do it. I don't care about your excuses about your program being down because thats lame as hell.

Ohio State has a legit shot at getting 4-5 5* this year and thats with the current ranking. OSU will have a top 5 class.

Rumors of a commit from D.C. LB Javarie Johnson. Reported by Lichtenfels on GBW:
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=162&f=1088&t=4238701

Then refuted by Johnson himself:
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=162&f=1088&t=4238743

Leaked by Johnson's coach supposedly. If true, it's another LB, which is a start, he held offers from UConn, Illinois (), Iowa, Maryland, MSU, NC St., New Mexico and wvu. A step in the right direction, but looks like a project and again, the type of guy wvu would go after, not necessarily a "top program" like tsun.

You don't "get away" if they never even had a chance.

I agree with a lot of what you guys are talking about with the "second tier" recruiting on defense. I will say this though. Other than the name and tradition of UM, what does UM have to offer for a defensive prospect? When was the last time UM had a great defense? 1997? It's going to take time, IMO, for Robinson to turn this defense around. Once he does, the recruits will come. This is an area that osu has no problem with. JT could sign an entire defense with the "click of his shoes". There are that many kids wanting to play defense for osu. Osu has had great defenses for many, many years, and their recruiting for it is a well oiled machine. I think UM will get back to getting those top defesive prospects, but it's going to take time.

and that was with a head coach that believed in and stressed defense. I don't understand how its supposed to get better under a HC that clearly emphasizes offense first and defense as an afterthought.

It's going to take time, IMO, for Robinson to turn this defense around. Once he does, the recruits will come.

Which of course is the same story we heard about English taking over for Herrman, Barwis taking over the S&C etc etc etc.

Recruiting and "wait till the new guy gets it going" off season talk are the only thing scUM fans have because they are completely subjective, opinion based conversations that can get spin job after spin job all off season. It might have some novelty if we hadn't just gone through 4 years of this shit with the Domers trying to convince us as to the greatness of Weis.

This time last year I recall conversations about how Warren and the inhumanly fast Trent were actually a better CB duo than Jenkins and Washington. Seriously. It starts with someone saying "he isn't really that bad" and next thing you know by September, Morgan Trent is a good football player.

The saying is a lie told often enough becomes the truth....that is until a Toledo shows up in your own back yard and bitch slaps you back to reality during that part of the year that isn't quite so subjective.

So scUM fans, enjoy the off season, enjoy recruiting and spring ball talk, enjoy the all the different fantasies of your impending dominance of CFB. Enjoy it all for as long as you can..........Western Michigan looms.

I mean, you guys get real excited about, say, Reid Fragel, but you beat out Purdue, Cincy, Miami, Maryland, and MSU for him. Just as an example, not Buckeye-bashing, to make that clear.

We've recruited quite a LOT of guys that were not highly regarded prospects nationally, had unimpressive offer lists that came to Ohio State under Tressel, and became NFL stars or starters. In this past class of players leaving, folks that are going to join this class of players include Jenkins, Laurinaitis, & Robiskie. Jenkins was a late-bloomer in HS that got no love from the recruitniks (3*) and had only 1 decent offer (V-Tech) out of the few offers he had, Lauinaitis (3*) had TWO offers late in the game with the other coming from home-state Minnesota, & Robo was a 2* prospect with MAC offers until very late in the game. All 3 of these guys are going to be 1st day picks in the draft. Donald Washington (3* prospect with offers from a bad Illinois team, Indiana, & Toledo) might make it 4.

In other words, we have reason to laud those that Tressel brings in "under the radar" like Reid, because there's no telling if he can be the next player that comes in like Nick Mangold that was not highly recruited or regarded (1 offer, 1* prospect), but leaves as one of the best centers OSU ever produced (1st round draft pick, NFL Pro Bowler). Other comparable stories to all of the above players come from A.J. Hawk, Chris Gamble, & Santonio Holmes.

I mean, what can m*ch*g*n compare to that in that same time frame (2001-present)? Are the guys m*ch*g*n is bringing in right now going to develop into players that are going to bring their school back from mediocrity, or is Dick Rod going to continue to run the school into the ground and prove that m*ch*g*n made a bad hire? Based on past history, I know where I'd put my money.

That's usually what draws in big-name recruits. You guys have also continued to put kids into the NFL despite your overall defensive struggles in recent years. If DR honestly cared about recruiting defense as much as offense, there's really no reason he should be grinding it out against Iowa, Wiscy, Illinois and middle tier southern schools or Big East schools for recruits. The m*ch*g*n name should sell itself. WVU fans told you guys when he came on board how DR recruits offense first then worries about defense...

Do you honestly think Robinson will get that much time? UM has been a carousel for DC's the past several years. Hell, DR threw his first under the bus after one season. Even if he is given time, with the depth issues and then considering what you lose again after 2009, it may be a while before you're fielding anything resembling a "good" defense. By that time, DR and his staff may have smoke coming off their hides...

The Wisconsin/Michigan game in 2008 was a "Big Ten's Greatest Games"?

Maybe our conference really isn't any good. The big wigs choose that game as the best of the best?

It should be titled "Sucking at Coaching: 101" as taught by RichRod and Bielama.

Yeah, I think so. I think the carousel of DCs the past four years has been a major part of the problem. There's been absolutely no consistency.

The problems that RR and UM are facing right now with depth issues can lead you back to Lloyd and his pitiful recruiting classes of 2005 and 2006. There are a couple guys in each of those classes that have panned out alright, but for the most part, those two classes were utter failures.

FWIW in 2005 UM was rated #2 in the country by Scout. In 2006 they were 9th. (Ahead of OSU both years.)

Also FWIW you landed a kid named Justin Boren in 2006 who by all accounts is panning out quite nicely.

I can buy the changing systems hurting their ability to be a strong defense. I just don't buy it prevents them from fielding a defense altogether, when tackling, pursuit angles and basic fundamentals continue to plague the UM defense. They may not have great depth, but they still have far more talent on their roster than most of their opponents, including little brother.

MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern... these teams rarely field one player with the talent of a Terrance Taylor, let alone a Graham, Warren, Cissoko, Turner, etc.
