2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

I have no clue what the "prevailing opinion" was, but recruiting rankings don't stop people on defense. Tsun doesn't stop anyone on defense because they don't develop players or have coaches that put them in the right positions. For example, I think Donovan Warren has regressed horribly, yet he was "ranked" very high.
They've got a lot of recruiting star power on that defense.

Most of the posters on their boards were predicting DickRod would come in and clean up in recruiting. They said he was a "name coach" at a "name university" and would basically pick and chose elite recruits to run his system. Thus far, he's recruiting like he's still at wvu getting lesser rated recruits and struggling to pull in many "blue chippers". That's what many of us thought would happen because his offensive system doesn't lend itself to much of a future in football after college. Not saying his offense will fail, just that he's not getting the calibre of guys they so arrogantly thought he would.

Absolutely agree, but star rankings are used as an evaluation of percieved talent. It's why we drool over guys like Etienne Sabino, Dorian Bell and Jamel Turner. They just aren't getting those kind of players. In a defensive oriented conference like the Big Ten, strong defensive teams rule the roost (scUM back in the day, tOSU, PSU and Wiscy). We're spoiled at tOSU because Heacock and his staff get a lot from of the talent they pull in. Greg Robinson is a much better coordinator than they've had up there in some time and you have to think he'd at least be somewhat better than Hermann, English or Schafer at developing those guys. Can his defensive system thrive with guys that would have gone to lower-level Big-Ten, SEC and Big-12 or MAC teams if they hadn't chosen tsun? I'm skeptical.

Nobody gets less from more (well, maybe Cheesburger Charlie).

I'm convinced if DR would give Robinson free reign and recruit solid defensive players, he'd improve that tendency. Somehow, I doubt that will happen. I still just don't understand how they can possibly be struggling to get top kids to come up there and play defense. Is DR really that offensively oriented when it comes to recruiting? Their fans/insiders will point to how many offers they have on the table, but extending an offer does not necessarily = recruiting a kid. WVU fans kept telling them that DR recruits offense and fills holes with the kids that can't cut it in his offensive system. It looks like that may be the case. If true, that's just foolish.

As has been pointed out a million times, their defensive depth is perilously thin...especially in the front 6/7. They're not really in on any big time DL and hardly have any offers out to true LBers (they just lost one they felt really good about to Okie St.). LaLota, one of their supposed big gets last year as a DL is apparently undersized and a RS candidate. I like Roh, but he doesn't come til the summer and may me shuttled from the DL to LB or the "spinner" position. It's as if they have no organization or strategy in their defensive recruiting. They keep loading up on athletes and DBs.

Wait a sec. What are Gardner, Miller, and Marvin Robinson if not blue-chip players? What are Campbell, Forcier, and Turner if not blue-chippers? Would Seantrel Henderson be blue-chip enough for you? I think you're underrating our classes at least as much as you think the Scout-boards crowd overrates them.

Don't I remember reading in this thread that there were walk-ons in the two deep on defense? Michigan is going to get some great kids by default, it's the depth that should be worrisome. If I'm not mistaken, a few of those kids didn't need much convincing to go to Michigan.

Okay, I'll bite.

Gardner is a good get, no doubt, and is perfect for DickRod's system. He's raw though and better hope Forcier survives the year to give him time to develop. Tater, likewise, if he isn't torn in half. That's QB, congrats. They're both very good recruits. Miller may very well be a good reciever too, but where are the RB's? I see a lot of smurfs and one kid from Texas who isn't exactly what anybody would call "blue-chip". And do you seriously think you have a chance at Henderson? Really? If so, I have some beans I think you may be interested in. Cambell, Turner and Robinson are top recruits, but where are the others? Your depth in the front 6/7 is awful, what top prospects are you guys really in on to improve that? I don't see any. I'm talking top-10 at their position, because those kind of guys used to pick um...they're not anymore. At least not at the level they have in the past. You listed 3 "blue chip" defensive recruits over a 2 year period on defense, and 3 on offense. I'm fully aware it's still early, but who does um look to be in on? Don't act like your brethren weren't forecasting utter domination by DickRod and his staff when he took the job. Are you honestly arguing that your guys recruiting has been up to snuff with years past?

Here's what you have so far...

scUM's commits and their rankings at their respective positions:

Per Scout:
QB- 7; RB- 41, NR; WR- 19, 26, 75, NR; DE- 46; S- 14

Their best chance at a top-10 (by position) player is Cass-Tech CB Dior Mathis (#6 CB)...

This is the recruiting juggernaut they were all forecasting?
One in the top-10 in his position. Those #'s are Purdue, Iowa or Wisconsin level. Those NR's aren't gonna be there either. Please explain how you think DR's defensive recruiting has you feeling good about the future.
