2009 tOSU WR discussion (official thread)

I think Washington is gonna be the guy who steps up.

I find it interesting that Washington and Sanzo came in at the same time, but Sanzo is discussed as a veteran and Washington is a young pup people are expecting things from. Says a lot about how Dane came in and immediately went to work here at tOSU.

Well, Sanzo does have 8 times as many catches as TWash at this point in their careers (TWash recorded 0 in 08), so in terms of game accomplishments, Sanzo is on another level. I do remember hearing that Sanzo had the entire playbook memorized by the first day of his freshman fall camp, so his dedication is definitely paying off in playing time. TWash's lack of PT last season was a bit of a suprise, considering he made some nice plays in 07. But, players of that age develop at different rates, and with WRs, there's always the factor of how they gel with the QB. I hope that TWash gets some reps, he has a great frame for a WR, and can make things happen after the catch.

Sanzo and Washington play different positions. Washington was not gonna replace Robo.

True, Sanzo's a slot guy, and TWash is an SE/FL, but Posey and Flash (both true frosh), and Small (who's spent more than half of his OSU career in the doghouse) got more snaps last year than TWash. Seeing as TWash didn't register an offensive gain in 08, but is listed as participating in 10 games, I'm not sure he even lined up at WR last season. Granted, passing attempts were quite low last year, but I would have expected to see TWash in the mix a little bit.

The ?two Brians,? Robiskie and Hartline, have moved on, leaving the Buckeyes without significant experience at receiver. Roy Hall and Dane Sanzenbacher saw time last season, but this position is a question mark.

While Small and Sanzenbacher have been in the Big Ten battles before, they do not posses prototypical size for receivers in the conference. In fact, they are downright tiny, Small at 5-11, 180 and Sanzenbacher at 5-11, 175.

I'm sure this was a mistake, and Dane may have competition other than Roy Hall for his spot this year. However, the debate about his size seems to come up every year and yet he has played (started) every year. Apparently Sanzo didn't get the memo about his size. There is more to size to be able to catch and run with the football. Maybe the size of his heart has something to do with his PT, or could it be another intangible - football smarts. I look for a leadership this year from Sanzo and maybe pushing the others for a starting job. He plays bigger than his size.

Has anyone noticed that Sanzo is listed as the backup holder in the SpringBall Depth Chart. Is the vest opening up for a possible fake/run? Or is Sanzo going to pass on a fake punt. He did play QB in HS.

I thought that ball that Saine threw during last spring game was pretty solid, I'd like to see a couple fakes myself. At least it would make opposing special teams think twice before selling out against a FG *cough* LSU*cough

Sanzo does seem to have built a connection with Pryor. He's had a handful of memorable catches already. All he needs is a break out game to really establish himself.

A lot of people were high on Washington after last year's spring game. There was talk too that he was impressive in the spring practices as well. It's time for him to step up and contribute.

Sanzo is a nice slot guy who can get open in space but he's not going to be the big playmaker at WR for us. That should belong to Mr. Posey, there's a reason he was ranked right below Julio Jones and AJ Green his senior year in HS. He's a playmaker and he will boost our WR corps, I don't think the Brians fit well into the spread offense scheme with Pryor. Running 4-5 WR sets with the likes of Posey, Washington, Sanzo, Thomas and maybe Carter(I'm not a big fan of Small, he's been far overrated, and is pretty much getting pub from statements made about him in HS); with Pryor and Herron/Berry in the backfield looks scary for defenses(and not just B10 defenses).
