2009 tOSU WR discussion (official thread)

HAZELL

-- said the WR pecking order is as so: DeVier Posey is No. 1, Dane Sanzenbacher No. 2 and Taurian Washington is No. 3. He said those are clear cut. After that, freshman Duron Carter is No. 4, Ray Small is 5 and Lamaar Thomas is 6.

-- Raved about Washington's camp. Said he's shown everything he has not shown in the first two years of his career. Still must see it on the field, but it sounds like Washington is a late-blooming success story.

-- Said Posey is starting to look like a big-time player, maybe not quite there yet. Carter is coming along, but "nothing has been handed to him."

-- Top punt returner is Small, backed up by either Posey or Sanzenbacher. But Small will be running back punts Saturday.

-- Top kick returner is Thomas (despite what depth chart says), followed by Boom Herron. Those are the two who will go deep. Brandon Saine may see some action there, too.

I have been toting TWash's skills for a looong time. I'm glad to see that he has put the intagibles together and he will be on the field a ton.

But then again, is anyone suprised? Didn't I tell you guys it was going to be Posey/Sanz/TWash a while back

Honestly, and you guys can mark me down for having said this and make fun of me for it later, I think that TWash will be our best performing wide receiver this year. I think he'll lead for us in yards, YAC, and YPR. It's just a funny feeling that I have with wide receivers. And seeing him live in the Spring game and the open practice only affirms my beliefs about him.

I still think Posey will lead in touchdowns and be the true #1 receiver, however.

Cheers to a great year for wideouts!

With the way Sanz and Posey are playing we don't need TWash to be a star immediately. And Small is back in the mix this gives us an explosive group of starters. Now, if we can just get the ball to them...............

-- Hazell says the receiver grades from last week were the best of the year so far: Sanzenbacher with a 93 (rare to get into the 90s), Posey with a 90 and Small with an 88. Says it's very gratifying to see Small work his way back into the mix and contribute, his speed stretches defenses and gives them an element.

-- Hazell was pleased with the receivers blocking last week, as well. Counted 13 cut blocks against Toledo, compared to 4 against USC. Have to get guys on the ground, it wears them out by the fourth quarter, he said.

OSU notebook: Suspensions create opportunities

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

LOS ANGELES -- As Ohio State jumped into its practice yesterday, there was still a rotation at the receiver positions.

The names, though, are different.

That's because Taurian Washington and Lamaar Thomas were backing up starters DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher, with Grant Schwartz taking a few turns, too. Senior Ray Small and freshman Duron Carter were the main backups in the regular season, but both were recently suspended and didn't make the trip for the Rose Bowl.

"Taurian and Lamaar have been the ones getting most of the reps," coach Jim Tressel said after the team arrived. "And they've felt all along they should be playing anyway, so we'll find out."

There were rumors circulating after the regular season that Washington and Thomas were thinking of transferring because of a lack of playing time. But Tressel said he hasn't had a conversation with either one about it.

Tressel said he always makes the point with his players to be ready for any opportunity.

"Prepare, and when your number is called, if you happen to deliver, it might get called a bunch more," Tressel said. "That's just the way it is."

The suspensions will require changes in creating the game plan.

"Will we go with four wides less (often)? Probably," Tressel said. "Will we line up the way four wides look? Probably."

In other words, the Buckeyes' four-wideout formations might include a running back or tight end filling a spot or two.
