Offensive line remains a work in progress

Tressel was asked whether it was unsettling that the makeup of the No. 1 offensive line isn't settled, because of the mild knee sprain that has kept Justin Boren out of action and the ongoing battle between Andrew Miller and J.B. Shugarts at left tackle.

"Well, I'd rather have eight offensive line starters back," Tressel deadpanned.

But he had praise for the current group that includes center Mike Brewster, right guard Bryant Browning and right tackle Jim Cordle -- three starters last year, though Cordle was at left guard and Browning at right tackle -- and Andrew Moses working a lot at left guard in place of Boren.

"I like the way they're playing. They're playing with a little bit of speed, with a little bit of assurance. They're not playing tentative. I think they're going to be a solid bunch."

There should be plenty of leadership, too, he said.

"The two guys that have probably been the steadiest and been able to show a little bit of leadership are Mike Brewster and Bryant Browning," Tressel said. "Justin Boren, I think, is going to be a guy who can add to that."

but
Cordle has been worth his weight in gold his entire career... tremendously valuable for his versatility... only selected folks and personalities should even attempt leadership... it may not be something some folks want... could make them uncomfortable...

Thank you Jim Cordle for all you have contributed over your career... we'd have been in a world of hurt without you

Agree on Cordle. Brewster is a rah-rah guy, and Cordle leads by example. He is an MVP for playing all of the line positions (assuming he nails down RT). Makes him more valuable to the pros as well. Surprising is Browning's leadership (per Tress), while last year he struggled. More maturity and confidence as a guard, I guess. LT is the hole, but pretty sure it will be filled, by committee if no one stands out. Boren sounds like the 'straw that stirs the drink' on the OL, and I'm glad that we've got him for two years - wish he wouldn't have wasted two up north......

Good news also about the 2's. If we add a couple of 5*'s this year, we'll be set with a whole new 'block O' as a legacy. Overall, it's looking good. Anyone with a thought when Tress & co will settle on a starting line and start working on cohesion?

My guarded optomism is starting to become rampant of this issue of the Buckeyes. I'm starting to come out of my shell with the USC faithful in my neck of the woods (they park their golf cart with the USC headcovers next to my golf cart with the OSU ones). Might even give them some points :biggrin:.

Oh, good lord! I meant absolutely NOTHING with that comment, derisive or otherwise. Just passing an observation that I considered, at that time, totally innocent. Its not my week for online comments, what with that safety performance comment that I made yesterday. I'm going to shut up with my opinions for the next week or so now. Apologies for that. :oh:

-- The offensive line is a source of constant interest, specifically the left tackle, and today, Andrew Miller repped with the starters. J.B. Shugarts was second team and Mike Adams third team. Sam Longo was fourth team.

The closer we get to the season, the more it appears that's the order we'll see for the opener, at least.

-- The rest of the second-team OL:

LG: Corey Linsley
C: Jack Mewhort
RG: Andrew Moses
RT: Marcus Hall

That's three true freshmen on the second team (Linsley, Mewhort and Hall). Again, this far into camp, that's not for show. It's time to be getting serious.

The rest of the third team OL:

LG: Connor Smith
C: Scott Sika
RG: Evan Blankenship
RT: Josh Kerr

When is someone going to do Offensive Line Players and Coaches a favor and invent a blocking sled that moves off the line? I get that the blocking sled teaches proper technique in that you have to push the pads backward a certain distance before it will allow you to lift it up... I think the guys on the line could use the help of a blocking sled that moves even 6 - 12 inches in either direction on the blow of the whistle so the players have to mix some footwork and reaction into the equation. If I had any kind of real money I might invest in some R&D... anybody out there have that kind of money?

They already make them. They're called defensive linemen. :wink2:

Ohio State may be a consensus top-10 team in the national polls, but don?t look for Terrelle Pryor and Co. to be there by the end of the season. I believe they?ll be held back by a problem that?s plagued the program throughout the Jim Tressel years: poor offensive line play.
I?m trying to think of the last time the OSU line actually mashed an opposing defensive front ? something I recall being relatively common in the 1990s. The Buckeyes have had trouble in recent seasons getting any kind of push even against the likes of Ohio University. What?s going to happen when they face Southern Cal?
Judging by recruiting ratings, Tressel without question has assembled the best offensive talent in the Big Ten since his arrival in 2001. But in the last eight years, the Bucks have finished sixth or worse in total offense in the league every year but one.

We actually had two of those back at my HS. I've actually never seen one that DOESN'T move.
