2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

I was reading Duane Long's blog and he brought an interesting perspective on Adams that I hadn't considered before..

You notice I am lumping Adams in with the freshman. He played so little last year but more importantly he missed so many practice reps. He likely missed alot of time in the weight room. For all intents and purposes he is a freshman. He has such physical tools. He is working hard from everything I am hearing. He is just behind and overwhelmed. It is all in his head. He has NFL first round tools. He is just not ready. Give him time.

As far as Adams go, Duane is right. It is too early to write him off. But when it comes to this season, it does not help much that Mike seems to be dropping, not rising on the depth chart. We'll just have to see how things play out. Boren being out doesn't help at all, so hopefully his return will spur some improved line play.

it is definitely too early to write adams off, but i will say that if he doesn't show some serious improvement by the end of the year, it might be time to start looking at other options for people to compete for the spot. coming off of an injury is extremely tough, but i totally agree that him not appearing to get any better (and in fact regressing) is a bad bad sign. i really hope he can turn it around and become a great contributor to the o-line, but i'm not holding my breath.

The only problem with that is Shugarts has also had to fight off injuries, and missed a large part of last season and the entire spring to recover. Adams may still become a player down the road, but to blame it entirely on injury or youth is not it.

Anybody else find it odd (or maybe a tad frightening) that Linsley and Moses split first team reps today? Did Connor Smith really get passed by a freshman in a couple weeks? I know Smith is playing RG but I thought he used to be a LG. Hopefully that just means Linsley has been great but I hadn't really heard much about him yet.

I think there's a lot of shuffling around going on to see who fits where. I'm not reading too much into any of it.

KYLE ROBERTSON | DISPATCH
Guard Justin Boren missed Saturday's scrimmage because of a sprained knee but is expected back for the opener against Navy.

No doubt, some Ohio State fans already have pushed their well-worn offensive line panic buttons.

It's less than two weeks before the season, they might say, and our best lineman is banged up, we don't know who will start at left tackle and the line gave up six sacks in a scrimmage Saturday.

You can't call these folks Chicken Littles, because their alarms might not be false. They have seen the sky falling before, and they fear it happening again.

"The pressure is on for us," right tackle Jim Cordle said, "because (in) the past couple of years, we've underperformed."

But in the same conversation, Cordle said he feels really good about the line. He said it has been the most physical, rigorous preseason camp he has seen in his five years, and "we've come far."

It takes some deep breathing and a big step back to gain perspective on the line situation. Here are some factors to consider about the line play in the scrimmage:

? Left guard Justin Boren sat out because of a sprained knee. He is expected back for the Sept. 5 opener against Navy. In his place were Andrew Moses, normally the second-team center, and Corey Linsley, a freshman with about a dozen college practices to his credit.

At left tackle, Tressel said the order heading into the weekend was Andy Miller, J.B. Shugarts and Mike Adams, but said change is possible. By the latter half of this week, Tressel said, decisions need to be made, at least for who starts the opener.

Tight end Jake Ballard said he thought left tackle "might come down to Andy getting the start and see where it goes from there."

For his part, earlier in camp, Pryor said he liked what he saw from the line.

"They're a lot slimmer, a lot leaner and I told them the other day they look real good," Pryor said. "I'm excited to see how they do."

In the end, though, past struggles hang over the line. Whatever the conditions in the scrimmage, the linemen don't expect to get the benefit of the doubt.

"We definitely received a lot of criticism last year, and that's what happens when you don't perform well," center Mike Brewster said. "So that's what we're going to change this year. We don't want to carry that stigma that the O-line can't block at Ohio State. We're ready to bring it this year, for sure."

The next thing I noticed was the offensive line rotation. As usual, it was interesting.

First team (left to right): Andy Miller-Boren (remember, this was individual drills)-Michael Brewster-Bryant Browning-Jim Cordle

Second team: J.B. Shugarts-Corey Linsley-Jack Mewhort-Andrew Moses-Marcus Hall

Third team: Sam Longo-Connor Smith-Scott Sika-Evan Blankenship-Josh Kerr

Who's missing? Mike Adams, who came into camp rotating with Miller at first-team left tackle. By last weekend, he was third team. Now, he's merely rotating in and out with the third team.

Gotta be excited for Andy Miller. Finally, as a fifth year Senior, after persevering through injuries and not giving up, he is competing for a staring job at LT.

He has definitely paid his dues, and a big part of me would like to see him get the nod to start, even though it is likely Shuggarts will see a lot of playing time as well.

Having a starting line up of Miller, Boren, Brewster, Browning and Cordle actually gives us a pretty mature OL and theoretically we shouldn't see many mental mistakes with this group.
