2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

or maybe he could just state that he has had the best camp in his 5 years.. has grown and learned a lot and is ready to help prove the naysayers about this OL wrong with conviction?

Yeah, I would rather have had him tell us that he really doesn't know any of the plays, has missed numerous assignments, and occasionally forgets the snap count because he's deeply entranced by a particular blade of grass.

I am starting to smell something.... could be the beginnings of a troll... if your concern is that somehow Cordle is self centered and egotistical, you could not be more wrong. Could we have worded stuff a little different, I guess so, but I like that Jimmy is taking ownership of his spot.

Been trying to keep up with all the updates on fall practice...but it's hard to gauge Oline play especially when most is just depth chart updates. We know Oline play has been our akiles heel the past few seasons and that typically it's noticeable even against some of our "weaker" opponents. I know we haven't even played a down this season yet.....but realistically, what should we expect this season from our Oline?? How effective do you think they will be against the teams like USC, especially the pass rush?? Improved?? Concerns??

Again, I know it's too early to know for sure, but just interested in others opinions on how they think the line will perform, 3 days out from the opener.

I personally believe the addition of Boren and his mentality towards playing Off Line is exactly what this unit has been waiting for. It is unfortunate that he had to waste a year in that landfill up north, but I tend to believe that he has the line nastier, more aggressive, and overall playing with more passion than we've seen for a while. That being said, the way that the mentality changes especially in practice, and the Def line that they have been going against all off season, I expect dramatic improvements. I believe OSU dominates Navy in the trenches more than expected and we go into Sept 12th with a new found confidence that's been lacking. I think this could be one of the better lines all around, the interior line is solid and the tackles seem to be making up alot of ground fast (including Cordle's comments of himself). Plus having Boren back before game one will help with the "gel" factor. Not that OSU will or won't dominate, but USC better have that D-line ready when they come into town.

Given all that Jimmy Cordle has contributed to this team in his OSU career, I think he has a right to toot his own horn once in awhile. He's played thru major injuries, he's dealt with position changes (including a "demotion" to a true frosh), he's been one of the most consistent members of the O-line since he set foot on the field, and he's handled it all with poise and class that belies his age. If he thinks he's had a good camp, then I have to think that he's ready for a great senior season. Keep in mind these kids aren't PR mavens, they're focused on football, and then someone sticks a mike in their face after a tough practice session. I did a bit of a double take myself when I read that comment, but I have to wonder if anyone would have given it a second thought had it been Terrelle or Coleman.

Beyond all that, it's good to hear some positive comments about the O-line. I'm sure Boren is champing at the bit, and the others will be gunning to improve on last year's play. Even if this group is merely solid, it should be enough to keep the chains moving. If they can achieve a high level of play and control the line, this could be a very fun year for an offense with a ton of talent at the skill positions. We'll find out a lot more in three days! Go Buckeyes!!!

Something about Cordle's self-adulation rubs me wrong.. IDK.. Maybe it's just the wording?

theozone.net has the video of Cordle's comments on their front page (about two-thirds way thru the full clip, right after Denlinger's comments)

He's not saying any of those with any amount of arrogance. When asked if he wondered how the O-Line would come together he answered:

(paraphrasing) "we needed to find a Left Tackle, we did...we lost Justin Boren, but he's come back quicker than we thought, so that's good...and I'm settling in at Right Tackle, had a great camp."

...everything he says is done in almost a nervous / bashful, softspoken manner.

Listening to him actually say the words and seeing the video, I think you'll see the comments in a different light.

Yeah.. thats right.. Im a troll who has been patiently waiting for 4 years to finally come out and nail Cordle to the whipping post?!

I suppose you've never heard of over compensating for what appears to be an obvious flaw? My guess is he perhaps reads the boards and knows people have questioned and even at times rooted for JB to win that spot? He just wanted to let it be known.. so be it .. don't go calling me a damn troll before you check my other 20 posts from the past 4 years?

What I expect? A solid Oline to give Pryor some time or at least let him have a read or two before improvising.

What would be nice? The 07 line. A squad that was able to buy Beockman time and was great at run blocking.

edit:

Gator, not sure why, but I thought your sig was just...dumb. Then I finally realized what the guy in the chair was looking
at. I apologize for my quick judgement sir. Carry on.
