2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Tressel is an outstanding head coach. He's a great recruiter. His teams will always bring great defense and special teams. And while I had a question mark for the first couple of seasons, once the Cooper recruits were gone and he learned a sense of what running a big time program entails, believe that he runs the program with integrity (although I'd still like to see a higher APR).

That being said, I just don't see us maintaining our momentum and place among the nation's truly elite programs until we start bringing in young, hungry and innovative OCs. We need to go out and find the next Norm Chow or Steve Sarkesian and let them unleash the hounds.

The defense has been a bright spot all season but the last two weeks we have given up one 15 play drive after another. It sure is hard for the offense to get in any type of rhythm when they're not on the field. It magnifies the importance of every possession and puts additional pressure on the offense which they don't seem to be able to handle.
There's no question that Coach Hazell is handling much more of the offensive responsibilities. Let's see where this goes over the course of the remainder of this year and more importantly next year. I am still optimistic that we will be pleasantly surprised in the end.

Okay question....where are the WR screens that every other D1 school run? Where's the screen passes to the RB? I feel like we aren't spreading the field, and everyone knows what play is coming next. Where's the surprise factor on the play calls where we put the defense on their heels, because it sure as hell hasn't been there all year.

Pryor needs to find a way to relax. It looks like to me that he is locking on to 1 maybe 2 guys and then when those guys aren't available he gets happy feet and doesn't know what to do with the ball. Get some confidence, hit your targets, or tuck it and run.

I think they were trying this a couple of times today and it just got blown up. I'm pretty sure one to TP's fumbles was supposed to be a RB screen. In general, I agree. I'd like to see more of it from the O.

Until we can get a team out of a man 2 shell, they wont be there or someone will get crushed. The lack of a vertical attack severely limits the possibilities.

Very true, and that's not going to happen unless the O-line steps up the protection. Can't throw the deep ball if you're on your back or have 3 guys in your face.

One play that stood out from my seats.

Ohio State had 2 guys flanked to the left of Pryor and right before the snap, the safety for Purdue runs right a spot about 25 yards off the LOS, in-between the 2 WRs. Pryor stepped back and threw it right to the safety. Luckily Posey (maybe Carter) broke up the pass.

Did Dane get any targets today?

The offense is so limited. It looked embarrassing today. Receivers running wrong routes, Pryor bailing out on the play and just throwing passes to no one, missed blocking assignments. Looked like amateurs, which is odd consider all the talk leading up to the game.

How does it look this bad against a terrible D, 6 games into the year?

And that's where changes need to be made. It looks like we run the same 4-5 offensive pass plays. Mix it up. I don't care if you have to lose your "conservative" play calling Tressel, just do something different. Take risks with plays because with the conservative play we are working with now, is just as bad as the worse outcome you could get with taking risks (the stupid turnovers). The plays we are running over and over and over reminds me of watching a Middle School game. It's sad.

How about the flea flicker? Kind of a trick play, but the other team might bite if they overcommit to the run.

a little play action might be nice as well.
