2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Until we can get a team out of a man 2 shell, they wont be there or someone will get crushed. The lack of a vertical attack severely limits the possibilities.

Exactly.

Purdue was sending 6-7 guys with regularity because they had no fear of the deep pass beating them, and that much traffic made it difficult for Pryor to break containment. It was a smart approach that will be copied by future opponents until the Bucks show the willingness and ability to stretch the field and punish them for it.

That can't be a staple play though...one time maybe 2.

Pffft. Has any team ever tried to make it their staple play? Until they do, I judge your statement to be based completely on supposition, rather than fact.

USC in the 2nd half showed the way to defend tOSU....we have been seeing this since that game....and it has taken a toll on our offense, qb and coaching staff. Go Bucks

Agreed. Until the offensive line improves, our offense is going to be pretty bad. It starts up front and they are not doing their job very well at the moment. Hopefully they all take a step back and go back to the basics. This offense can still be good, they just need to start playing with confidence. Less talking..........more performing. :)

I think the change from the I formation to the shotgun was good at first but now it seems like teams have figured us out again and we are right back to square one. I just look back on our offense and when it was good, late 2005 and 2006 we ran a lot of formations. I also thought the first half of 07 with TB that our offense looked pretty good. We have been a primarily I formation team most every year.

Could running 90% of our stuff out of the shotgun be doing more harm than good. JT always says he wants to be a power team, a spread team and run various formations....but one thing for sure other than our 5 wide 2 minute offense we have been a very high percentage 1 back..shotgun offense.

One other thing we have various 5 star olineman(Adams, Shugarts, Boren, Brewster) that are playing very average(at best).....how does USC do it with their young lines from last year and this year. I have no idea of the answer on that one....other than their 5 star talent was much much much better than what we recruited. Go Bucks

The offensive line was atrocious today (again) and I'm not sure how you go about fixing what has been a problem for a few years now. It doesn't matter how much or how little experience there is along the O line, if OSU doesn't have a Clarett or a Beanie back there then they can't do anything.

Unbelievable performance today, just unreal.

See this is the thing, we have generally been able to run the ball pretty well this year with our backs. The problem is pass protection. It's not there. IMO, a few games this year (including today's loss) we've abandoned the run too early.

Disagree. The run blocking underachieved early this year, while the pass protection was better than expected.

I think the line played better with Miller & Cordle in there. I doubt many fans saw that coming.

The offensive line's job would be easier if our play calling wasn't so predictable based on formations and tendencies that we see over and over again.

It's like all of the "speed" talk we have heard - when the defense can tell what is coming, they will always be a step ahead of the offense.

Correct me if you think I am wrong, but more I watch the more I see the lack of leadership on the Offensive side of the ball. At this point it can't come from TP, he has other things to work on. I think maybe the same thing can be said about the other freshmen / sophmores, who are still trying find their place in this system. With the lack of upperclassmen on Offense, who steps up to become the emotional leader? Boren, Dane, or does Ray Small (senior) surprise us all?

Someone has to step up, and it needs to happen this week.

The leadership has to come from TP... no ifs, ands, or butts about it IMO. It's as cliche as you can get, but the other 10 guys in the huddle have to be able to look into your eyes and know your gonna lead them back if your going to have success.

TP will always be a "defacto" leader (just comes with being the QB). I just don't think he is in the position to do this by himself, and continue to get better. Someone has to step up and lead (or help lead) the emotional charge on that side of the ball. I'm talking about that "senior guy" who has been around the block once or twice and can help hold things together (and kick some folks in the rear when needed). Every team has them, and usually you can figure out who that person(s) is (even if they are not a "Captain") week in and week out. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm just not seeing it out of anyone on that side of the ball. Fortunately, adversity tends to lend a hand in finding these types of players.

I agree the line was not very good today - but if you cmoe up with a scheme where 6 guys can block 7 or 8 guys consistently play after play, then please share it with the rest of us.
