2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

I don't know why people keep complaining about the offense. I happen to think it's very unselfish of them to get off the field so quickly so we can all enjoy this awesome defense some more!

LOL...... That actually sounded like a possible sound clip from Tress sometime throughout the year. He has been making those jokes about all other points of the media's questioning. Why not the offense too?

Spent a good part of this morning reading old Buckeye game day programs, SI articles, etc, and came across this line, which appeared in the Sept 9, 2001 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's game recap of Tressel's first win (over Akron):

"Tressel's offense will dazzle where Cooper's bored, evidenced by the three tight end set that wound up being a touchdown flare pass to the fullback."

Nine seasons later ...

Kinda ironic to be 68th, as I'd forgotten about this article from last year. A friend reminded me of it a few minutes ago. :wink2:

The trend is away from coaches calling the plays. Fewer than 30 of the 119 coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision call plays. Under Tressel's play-calling, the Buckeyes' eight-year national ranking in total offense averages 68th and has never cracked the top 25 in any season.

I'm usually all for consistency, but in this case it suggests a negative trend. I don't claim to have the answers, but I would say that continuing to do things the same way will likely produce similar results.

We'll win plenty of games with defense, special teams and overall talent as long as the top recruits keep finding their way to Columbus. But wins over top ten teams will be harder to come by, as we have seen the last six such meetings.

Is it wrong to think we should reassess what we're doing and try something else, offensively?

It sucks that my point was proven...If the offense had to win us a game, they would not be able to do it.

I honestly said before the game that I would like to see us put up 400 yds and 49 pts...So I still had the optimism against what has been seen the past couple weeks...

Maybe it is a good thing if we are not in a title hunt and can just go out and play, and I thought we looked half way decent at times today, once we got past the 5 turnovers...

Still the o-line struggled, WR didn't get open, a QB that didn't make good decisions, and bad play calling...

I've felt this way ever since the emotion subsided from USC.

Losing hurt, but this is not a great team. It's a very young, talented team.

Guys like Pryor, Adams, Shugarts, Brewster, Carter, Posey are all huge elements of this offense, and need time to realize their talent. That's not a complete excuse for their breakdowns, but it's the reality of the growing pains they are enduring right now.

Oklahoma & Texas have turned the ball over 7 times now, with another 2-3 fumbles miraculously recovered by the ballcarrier or bouncing out of bounds. They couldn't even run a fumble back without fumbling

Better offense than OSU? Clearly, but it's amazing how badly the wheels come flying off of OU's offense on the big stage.

Colt McCoy was on the ground 14 times in the first half :yow1:

I agree...It always sucks to have to look ahead mid way through a season, and this team is talented, and lets hope that too many guys don't leave early from the defense...

I think Pryor will progress, and now the pressure is off for the year, go out and get a big ten title, improve, and make a run next year...

"Their offense is pretty easy to figure out." Pete Carroll

He said that after last year's game, not this year. The nine year trend of having the 68th ranked offense in the country is more than just being a "young team" this year. It speaks to a flawed offensive approach that has only been masked by great defense and special teams, more often than not.

Herbie sure went out of his way to defend Stoops bashers for his team not showing up on the big stage. That was an awfully fast dismissal of their immense failures.
Herbie's been doing that. He was on The Herd on Friday defending Stoops and talking about how Ohio State could be good if they learned if they learned how to throw a forward pass.

Don't look now, but we're seeing defenses dominating high octane offenses this year. UF, OU, UT are all plodding along with a lot of mistakes this year.

Nice. I can't even listen to ESPN radio any more.
