2009-10 Ohio State Wrestling Season

taped and watched. didn't finish. could someone more learned than me tell me that what I watched was an anomoly? Thought Iowa destroyed the Buckeyes (don't know the final score), but it seemed like our good wrestlers were being 'handled' fairly easily. Watched the nationals last year, and it seemed like our guys were more 'up' than last night. Injuries going on? Hope there isn't that big a chasm between the IOwa and OSU programs.......and thanks in advance.

No. 4/3 Ohio State 3, No. 1 Iowa 32
Feb. 19, 2010
Iowa City, Iowa
Carver-Hawkeye Arena

No. 4/3 Buckeyes Lose to No. 1 Iowa, 32-3 - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 4/3 Ohio State wrestling team lost, 32-3, to No. 1 Iowa Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The Buckeyes wrap up the regular season 18-2 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten and will now focus their attention on the Big Ten championships March 6-7 at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.

With the match starting at 133 pounds, freshman Ian Paddock experienced collegiate wrestling in Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the first time and nearly pulled off an upset over third-ranked Daniel Dennis. The Buckeye from Warsaw, N.Y., dropped a close 3-2 decision. After Dennis scored a takedown early in the first period, Paddock countered with an escape to make the score 2-1. However, Dennis took a 3-1 lead in the second period when he chose bottom and recorded the escape. Dennis' escape would serve as his and the period's only scoring. In the rally attempt, Paddock scored an escape of his own early in the final period, but that was all he could manage as he fell short in his bid in a comeback.

No. 2 Reece Humphrey re-entered the starting lineup at 141 pounds and drew the Buckeyes even at 3-3 following his 9-5 decision over No. 4 Montell Marion. Humphrey, a native from Indianapolis, Ind., took a 4-1 lead into the second period as he scored a takedown in the final seconds of the first. A senior team captain, Humphrey then increased his lead to 8-4 after the second period before the final tally.

The premier match of the evening that featured No. 1 vs. No. 2 was up next at 149 pounds. Unfortunately the outcome was not in the Buckeyes' favor as second-ranked Lance Palmer lost, 3-1, to No. 1 Brent Metcalf. The Hawkeye struck first with a takedown and carried that slim advantage into the second period. Metcalf chose bottom in the second frame and after scoring the escape, owned a 3-0 lead. With no additional scoring in the second period, Palmer, a senior tri-captain from Columbia Station, Ohio, notched an escape to start the third and tried for the match-tying takedown, but was unsuccessful.

A 5-2 loss at 157 pounds by sophomore Sean Nemec to Aaron Janssen followed and Iowa increased its lead to 9-3.

At 165 pounds junior Colt Sponseller lost a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Ryan Morningstar, the No. 4 wrestler in the nation. After Morningstar compiled two minutes of riding time in the second period, the Buckeye from Glenmont, Ohio, nearly pulled off the same tactic in the third period, eliminating Morningstar's riding time advantage. However, a last second escape by the Hawkeye gave him the only point of the match.

Senior Dave Rella suffered a 9-0 setback to second-ranked Jay Borschel at 174 pounds and Iowa took a 16-3 lead in the team scoring.

No. 7 Mike Pucillo matched up against No. 11 Phil Keddy and lost a tight 3-2 match at 184 pounds. A takedown and escape was enough for Keddy as Pucillo scored a pair of escapes in just the third Big Ten loss of his career.

At 197 pounds, redshirt-freshman C.J. Magrum lost, 6-1, to Luke Lofthouse before senior Corey Morrison and 10th-ranked Dan Erekson took to the mat. A native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Morrison was pinned with seven seconds left in the first period.

Wrapping up the evening at 125 pounds was Nikko Triggas and No. 3 Matt McDonough. Triggas lost, 9-1.

Cali,

I don't get BTN (and the bars are reluctant to put on a wrestling match at 11 on a Friday night) so I wasn't able to watch the match. However, I believe I can provide some insight.

Iowa is far and away the best team in the nation. I know the Bucks goal coming in to the season was to win a national title, and that they were quite close to accomplishing that last season as well. But last year at nationals Iowa really struggled, and OSU wrestled quite well. Iowa is so deep across all weights that they are virtually unbeatable in a dual. The only weights were they don't have a top ten ranked wrestler are at 157 and 197.

To be honest, despite the score, there was much to be encouraged about from this match. I will break it down by weight:

125 - No. 3 Matt McDonough (I) vs. Nikko Triggas (OSU), 9-1
- McD is the real deal and is undefeated this year. Triggas nearly kept it to a decision, which is a good effort in my mind.

133 - No. 3 Daniel Dennis (I) dec. Ian Paddock (OSU), 3-2
- Great performance by Paddock. He has been stuggling of late, and managing to keep it this close against Dennis is a very good sign. Going in, I thought he was going to get majored pretty easily.

141 - No. 2 Reece Humphrey (OSU) dec. No. 4 Montell Marion (I), 9-5
- The fact that Reece was able to get out there and wrestle, let alone defeat a strong opponent like Marion, was the best part of this match. Reece was battling an ankle injury and I was unsure if he would even wrestle. From what I've read he was noticeably bothered by it during the match. For him to able to post a 4 point victory over Marion while hurt has me very excited about his prospects going forward.

149 - No. 1 Brent Metcalf (I) dec. No. 2 Lance Palmer (OSU), 3-1
- Against any other team this match is a win for the Bucks. But Metcalf is number one for a reason. Lance was certainly in it the whole way, and will hopefully have two more shots against him.

157 - Aaron Janssen (I) dec. Sean Nemec (OSU), 5-2
- This is a weight where some teams can steal a victory from Iowa. Unfortunately, it is not a strong weight for the Bucks. Janssen is good, but this is the type of match Nemec needs to start winning.

165 - No. 4 Ryan Morningstar (I) dec. No. 6 Colt Sponseller (OSU), 1-0
- This was the typical Morningstar/Sponseller match; Ryan beats Colt by the smallest of possible margins. It's unfortunate Colt couldn't get the escape in the 2nd, but nearly riding out Morningstar in the 3rd (which would have sent the match to SV) was very impressive.

174 - No. 2 Jay Borschel (I) maj. dec. No. 11 Dave Rella (OSU), 9-0
- This went about as expected. Borschel is undefeated and is on a whole different level than Rella. Had hoped Dave could keep it to a decision.

184 - No. 11 Phillip Keddy (I) dec. No. 7 Mike Pucillo (OSU), 3-2
- Despite his struggles this year, Keddy is a stud. Something is still off with Mike, but this was better than his performance against Dergo. Still holding out hope he can turn things around.

197 - Luke Lofthouse (I) dec. C.J. Magrum (OSU), 6-1
- This is the other chink in Iowa's armor. But alas, this is OSU's worst weight. Would have liked to have seen Cody keep this one closer.

285 - No. 10 Dan Erekson (I) pinned Corey Morrison (OSU), 2:53
- Despite his ranking, Erekson is a legitimate national title contender. Still, I'd rather not see Corey getting pinned.

Overall, I would say the first 5 matches (from 133 to 165) were very encouraging, despite the poor ouctomes, while the last five were somewhat discouraging, though not terrible.

Thanks, Stkoran, for that concise analysis. You could do that for pay, I believe. Don't watch enough, but read all I can (Buckeye Sports Bulletin), and thought we had a better chance than we showed. (I wasn't on the mat, but bleed scarlet & gray on ANY sport).

From the schedule, go to the B10's and then nationals. Would like to see OSU peaking for those (OSU seems to always underperform at B10's, or said another way, finds an extra gear when they get to Nationals). Like the direction that the program is going, and it seems like more of the 'big name' recruits are looking at OSU very hard.

I watched the entire match, it wasn't nearly as lopsided as the 32-3 score would indicate. We had legitimate shots to win matches at 133 (where we shouldn't have been in it), 149, 165, 184, and 157 was even a pretty good match. It just looked to me like the Iowa wrestlers wanted it a little bit more. We are still probably the second best team in the Big 10 and Top 5 in the country, but we aren't in Iowa's league right now. I was furious after watching the match because the score should have been close coming out of 184, and it wasn't remotely close. But every match up to 174 was a winnable match for us, and there is definitely something to be said for that, maybe in the Big 10s or at nationals a couple of those go our way.

2010 Big Ten Wrestling Championships Pre-Seeds Announced - BIG TEN OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE

Conference officials announced on Tuesday the preliminary seeds for the 2010 Big Ten Wrestling Championships. The pre-seeds are determined by a vote among the conference's head wrestling coaches after consideration of regular-season results. This year's Big Ten Wrestling Championships will be hosted by the University of Michigan at Crisler Arena on March 6-7.

Wrestlers from six different Big Ten schools are represented as No. 1 seeds. Iowa leads all schools with three grapplers seeded at the top of their respective weight classes, while Indiana and Minnesota each have two. Illinois, Ohio State and Wisconsin each have one wrestler seeded No. 1.

Ohio State's Reece Humphrey (27-2 at 141 pounds) is seeded No. 1 in his weight class and looks to challenge for a Big Ten Championship at his new weight class. Last year, Humphrey, now wrestling at 141 pounds, earned runner-up honors at 133 pounds and aims for his first conference title.

All 10 Buckeye wrestler were pre-seeded (Iowa only other school with all 10 pre-seeded):

125 Triggas #6
133 Paddock #7
141 Humphrey #1
149 Palmer #2
157 Nemec #7
165 Sponseller #3
174 Rella #4
184 Pucillo #4
197 Magrum #8
285 Morrison #6

Great post and completely agree.

Ya'Ain't gonna beat Iowa in a dual, NO way, NO how. Nobody can.

Thing is, we've gotta take advantage of "matchups" the way we have the past 2 years. Great wrestlers have that certain "gear" that they go into when it matters, as all Champions do, in all sports. I'll tell you right now that Pucillo is gonna be a bitch in the NCAA's. I see Lance taking a run to the finals as well. Reece is gonna score some big points and has a great chance at a title and Colt has a great shot as well. These 4 are our big guns. We'll get some points from elsewhere, and if matchups along the way don't go the way of Iowa, we'll be in it to the end.

Weird that short, fat guys like me love this sport so much. Probably because of the appreciation that I have for kids that sacrifice SO much for a dream that has basically $0.00 at the end of their rainbow.

GO BUckeye Grapplers!!

The "Nation" as we know it, is behind you ALL the Way!!:oh:

Peace

As far as High School Wrestling goes, Should I or anyone post "up to the minute" results on the State Tourney and how the Monroeville wrestlers are doing?

If you're a fan, you know who the BIG-4 are coming into the tournament, a combined 184-0!!

After today's first round, the record just went up to 188-0!!!:oh:

Best of luck guys!! Hope to see ALL of you in S&G some day!

Peace

Finals & OSU predictions based on the pre-seeds holding up:

125: Escobedo (IN) dec. McDonough (Iowa)
Triggas gets 6th

133: Gomez (MSU) dec. Ness (Minn)
Paddock gets 5th

141: Humphrey (OSU) dec. Marion (Iowa)

149: Metcalf (Iowa) dec. Palmer (OSU)

157: Schlatter (Minn) dec. Sanderson (PSU)
Nemec gets 5th

165: Howe (WI) dec. Morningstar (Iowa)
Sponseller gets 3rd

174: Borchel (Iowa) mdec. Manuel (Pur)
Rella gets 5th

184: Keddy (Iowa) dec. Dergo (Ill)
Pucillo gets 3rd

197: Brandvold (WI) dec. Beatty (Iowa)
Magrum gets 8th

285: Everhart (IN) dec. Erekson (Iowa)
Morrison gets 6th

Really not very much deviation from the seeds, as I think they did a great job with them. Obviously some things will shake out differently. Hope the Bucks can get 2nd, but I'm thinking they end up 3rd behind Minnesota. Minny will score more than us at 125, 174, 197 and 285 and much more at 133 and 157. We will score slightly more at 141, much more at 149, 165 and 184. I think we will come up 7-10 points short of them. Pins from Triggas and Palmer could help the cause. Colt and Mike making the final, a big tournament from Rella could also turn the tables.

Finals will be on the BTN Sunday at 2 p.m.

UPDATE: Apparently Schlatter is injured and will not wrestle this weekend. Bucks should be in the driver seat for second now. Let's see if Nemec can upset Kinser and make some noise. He was ahead last time the wrestled until running out of gas in the 3rd.

I never wrestled, but my Brother-in-law was a solid HS wrestler and one of my early bosses was an alternate to the Olympic team when he was in the services, so I have followed it from afar for years. I've followed the Buckeye Grapplers for years, and I love what Tom Ryan has done for tOSU wrestling. He has brought the fire and enthusiasm that makes the HS kids want to stay home and build tOSU into a National powerhouse.

Here's to a solid B10 tourney and qualifying as many kids as possible into the Nationals and having things fall into place and having kids wrestle out of their minds there and bringing more hardware home to Columbus. We need Pucillo to return to form, Humphrey to reach his goal, Palmer to finally get over the Metcalf hump and Colt to have things fall his way, and the other guys to be solid and at the very least get some wins in the consolation brackets (some pins would also help :tongue2:) :oh:

The OHSAA Wrestling State Championships are going on this weekend at the Schott. All three Ohio State commits will be going for 1st place tonight starting at 5:30.

Josh Demas (Westerville North) DI at 171 lbs.

Hunter Stieber (Monroeville) DIII at 119 lbs. Hunter will be going for his third state title. Hunter is only a junior.

Logan Stieber (Monroeville) DIII at 125 lbs. Logan will be going for his fourth state title tonight, which will make him the 19th wrestler in Ohio history to be 4x State Champ.

On a side note, Wadsworth and St. Eds are in a close team race for the DI team title. St. Eds has won 13 (I think) consecutive team titles.

In OHSAA news:

Besides the commits previously mentioned, OSU commit Drew Stone (Oak Harbor) will be wrestling in the D2 finals at 125 and OSU commit Max Gladstone (Findlay) finished 3rd in HW in D1.

Big Ten Update after the first session:

OSU sits in 5th place with 46 points, 13 behind PSU for 2nd. Iowa leads with 93. Iowa 15-0 so far today with all wrestler in the semifinals. For OSU, Reece, Lance, Colt and Mike are still alive in the championship bracket. Honestly a pretty strong performance thus far for the Bucks, though.

125: Triggas wins his first match then lost to Sanders 6-1 which is a good showing.

133: Paddock won his first match before losing to Dennis 4-0, which, again, is not bad at all.

141: Reece with a huge scare. Down 4-2 after the second period to #8 seed Cole Schmitt. Tied it up with a TD in the 3rd, Schmitt escape to go up 5-4. Reece gets the TD with 8 seconds left to get the decision 6-5.

149: Lance with the major over Mason to set up a big match with Ruschell.

157: Nemec loses a close one to Kerr 6-5. Kinser got upset, so Nemec will be facing off against him the wrestleback, a tough break for him.

165: Colt with a major and an easy decision so far, setting up a big match against Morningstar.

174: Rella "upest" by #5 Blanton 9-7 in sudden victory. Dave should still be able to get into the 3rd/4th place match without too much trouble.

184: Pucillo over Rutt 6-2, setting up a re-match with Dergo. Hopefully it goes better than last time.

197: Magrum loses to #1 Beatty 6-0. Beatty just coming off injury, but still good for C.J. to hold it to a decision. If he can win his first wrestleback bout he is guaranteed to get into the 7th place match for a chance to auto to nationals.

285: Morrison loses 1-0 to Wade. Solid performance, hopefully he keeps it up.
