2009-10 Ohio State Wrestling Season

One other tidbit I forgot to mention regarding Humphrey and why I really feel like he was the best 141 and the title was his for the taking: he was taken down zero times during the entire tournament and was not reversed. Every point scored against him was either from escapes or riding time.

This post will focus on a little more info from nationals and my perspective on the disappointment following the Bucks' performance at nationals. The next post will focus on potential lineups for next year.

First off, regarding the protest during Triggas' first round match:

The staff really felt that Nikko got the short end of the stick in this match. They felt that Nikko should been awarded a near fall after having the BU wrestler on his back for over 4 seconds earlier in the match. But what caused the protest occurred at the end of the match with Triggas up by one. On the edge of the mat, the BU wrestler was working a cradle while Nikko had his ankle, but a TD was awarded to the BU guy. On the restart, Nikko did to the BU kid what had just been done to him, but not only did the ref not give him the reversal, he didn't even get an escape.

More on Hump v. Dake:

When Hump took Dake down in the first, he had him on his back and NF possibly could have been awarded. Hump said he felt it was a good no call, as when in doubt, especially in such an important match, the refs should let the wrestler decide it on the mat. Hump said had the NF been awarded, the match would have effectively been over. Hump was also still dealing with that ankle injury he sustained at the end of the regular season, as well as some neck and back issues.

More on Pucillo:

Upset with himself over the pigtail loss to Miller, felt that he was definitely the better wrestler. Also, his shoulder is seriously messed up, to the point that his one arm is pretty much worthless, preventing him from finishing shots that he used to finish with ease. Also, OSU staff furious over the NF awarded in his match with Foster. Felt he was at 90 degrees, 80 at most (the wrestlers shoulders must be at a minimum 45 degrees from the mat to get a NF).

My take on the perceived disappointment over this season:

First off, this team was clearly a better dual team than last year, having no real "bad" weight. But in terms of a national tournament team, coming into the season, even expecting a healthy Pucillo, I felt they would be worse. They lost a national champ in Jaggers and didn't have a stud to replace him with. You don't do well as a team at nationals by having a lot a solid guys win 2-3 matches. You do well by having studs who can place high (see Wisconsin: Howe, Graff, Ruschell and Brandvold pretty much got 4th place). Jaggers accounted for 20+ points last year, you can't replace that with some more guys who may win another match in the consolation bracket.

Second, while outside of Triggas, nothing "exciting" happened, nothing really bad happened either. This is what I had expected/hoped going into the tounry:

Triggas: 2-3wins/3wins-AA (result: 8th place AA)
Paddock: 1-2wins/2-3 wins (result: 2 wins, with his two losses to seeded oppontnets)
Humphrey: Top 4/First (result: 3rd)
Palmer: Top 2/First (result: 2nd)
Nemec: N/A
Sponseller: Top 8/Top 3 (result: 3 wins, round of 12, failed to place)
Rella: 2 wins/3 wins (result: 1 win, lost to 2 seeded opponents)
Pucillo: 3-4 wins/AA (result: 4 wins, round of 12, barely missed AA)
Magrum: 1 win/2 wins (result: 2 wins with both losses to ranked opponents)
Morrison: 1 win/2 wins (result: 0 wins, both losses to ranked opponents)

Outside of Colt, I don't think anyone had that poor of a tournament, and it's not as if his was a complete disaster (i.e. Lewnes going 0-2 last year). Triggas was the bright spot, Paddock and Magrum both did as good as could have been expected and had great first tournaments, Mike was hurt and nearly AA'd, Reece and Lance met expectations, just didn't get that crowning jewel to their careers, and Morrison and Rella were the victims of some brutal draws, both facing tough, seeded wrestlers who had been upset in the wrestlebacks. Although the season surely didn't end with a bang, I don't think it ended with a thud, either.

EARLY 2010-2011 Outlook

OSU has signed the following recruits for next season (rankings according to InterMat):

Logan Steiber, 125lbs, 4-time Ohio state champion, #1 recruit in the nation

Derek Garcia, 165lbs, 4-time Washington state champion, #8 recruit in the nation

Josh Demas, 174lbs, 2-time Ohio state champion, placing 2/3/1/1, #45 recruit in the nation

Drew Stone, 125lbs, 2-time Ohio state runner-up

Max Gladstone, 285, 2010 3rd Place D1

Demas, Stone, and Gladstone will certainly redshirt. I am uncertain what they will do with Logan and Derek.

My best guess for our lineup next year is:

125: Steiber
133: Triggas
141: Palmer
149: Jameson
157: Nemec
165: Sponseller
174: Heflin
184: Capone
197: Magrum
285: Hiles

Of that group, I would really like to see Colt redshirt and work on his mat skills, as they are clearly holding him back from greatness. In that event, Garcia could wrestle at 165, and then Colt could come back at 174 the following year, or at 165 and Garcia could redshirt. Wouldn't mind seeing Logan or Nikko take a redshirt either.

I think the team will definitely be worse next year, as will happen when you lose 5 seniors (plus another started in Paddock to a likely redshirt, plus potentially two more in Triggas and Sponseller). Much of how good they are will depend on the ability of Steiber (if no redshirt) and Palmer to be studs right away, plus the growth of people like Magrum/Nemec/Jameson and Triggas maintaining AA form. AA performances from Steiber, Triggas, Palmer and Sponseller, with some points from the other guys should be enough for a top 10 finish at nationals.

I think that Magrum will be much improved after another year at the weight and being able to add additional strength. He moved up from 174 after all, so he has some bulking up to do. He also needs to work on his offense, as it was nonexistent against better opponents.

Heflin should step in and be similar to what Magrum was this year at 197, I think. Picking up wins over most unranked guys and keeping the score down against the top people.

Not sure how good Hiles will be next year, I'd guess something slighlty worse than Morrision, but not completely sure.

I think 184 will be a big hole.

In any event, it should be an exciting year to see what the young guys can do, especially Palmer and Steiber (if no RS), plus seeing the growth of Jameson, Magrum, Nemec.

If two of Steiber/Paddock/Triggas RS next year, expect to see Pat Harrington at either 125 or 133. He is serviceable, but not great.

Thanks again stkoran.

Lots of holes to fill next year. Even so, there's a logjam in the lower weights, such that Ian Paddock, a starter this year who (IMO) did much better than we should have expected, may not have a spot. Any chance that Palmer might bump to 149 and Paddock fill 141? Are we stronger with Paddock in the line-up, or with Jameson in the line-up?

I'm looking forward to seeing what the freshmen (both the newcomers and the redshirts) can contribute. Was absolutely astounded at how many freshmen made to the finals at Nationals.

Hiney:

I think if Palmer can't make 141 he will undoubtedly go 149. That means we will have another Jameson/Nemec co157 situation and Paddock may very well take 141 in that scenario.

If I had to guess, I would think the hope would be that Palmer can man 141 for the next two years with Jameson at 149 and Nemec at 157. Then when Nemec graduates have Pamer bump up to 149, Jameson to 157 and Paddock to 141. Something to the effect of the following for the next three years:

125: L. Steiber L. Steiber L. Steiber
133: Triggas Paddock H. Steiber
141: Palmer Palmer Paddock
149: Jameson Jameson Palmer
157: Nemec Nemec Jameson
165: Sponseller Garcia Garcia

Obviously that could change based on decisions to redshirt or weight issues.

Hopefully nothing to worry about here, but Derek Garcia will not be enrolling at OSU for the upcoming year. He recently found out that he will require another knee surgery, so the plan is for him to take the year off to rehab and enroll at OSU in 2011 in order to not waste his redshirt should he need it, as well as to give OSU a little more flexibility scholly wise this year.

This will have little to no impact on next year, as Garcia was likely to redshirt anyway.

OSU gets a big lift with the signing of heavyweight Tyrell Fortune. Tyrell was a juco national champ two years ago before taking a redshirt last year. He is expected to enroll at OSU for winter quarter and will have three years of eligibility remaining. This fills a significant hole in the Buckeye's lineup over the next few seasons, as I wasn't sold on Hiles and Tyrell looks like he has the makings of an All-American.

Great write up on Tyrell by Kevin Schlosser over at Buckeye Wrestling is here:

The article also mentions that OSU picked up another recruit, Randy Languis, a state champion at 140 lbs last year for Dublin Scioto and and a three time state placer.

Lebanon wrestler follows a family tradition

Lebanon wrestler follows a family tradition
Sophomore Eddie Noble learned from his uncle John, a two-time state champ, and dad.

By Matt Tanksley, Staff Writer

When you mention wrestling in the Noble household in Lebanon, many heads will likely turn your way as the sport is truly a family affair for them.

The current family wrestling star is Eddie Noble, a sophomore at Lebanon High School and an eighth-place finisher in the 103-pound weight class at the state wrestling meet in Columbus.

Eddie has done a great job living up to the family tradition that includes father Eddie (class of 1986) and uncle John ('92), both former Warrior wrestling standouts. Eddie's uncle is a two-time state champion, winning titles in 1990 and ?92.

This family history led Eddie to become interested in the sport at an early age.

Continued...

While just a sophomore, Eddie has already thought about college.

"I'm hoping to get a scholarship to wrestle in college, hopefully at a Big Ten school. Ohio State would be my first choice."

National Wrestling Hall of Fame

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Logan Stieber, a high school senior from Monroeville High School in Monroeville, Ohio has been selected as the national winner of the 2010 Dave Schultz High School Excellence National Award presented by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum.

The High School Excellence Award is named in honor of Olympic and World Champion Dave Schultz. Each award recipient is evaluated on excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, character, citizenship, and community service.

Stieber was selected from the 49 state winners and five regional winners that were announced one week ago.

Stieber's high school career record stands at 184-1. He is a four-time state high school champion and was named Ohio Wrestler of the Year in 2010. He is also a three-time USA Wrestling National champion in freestyle as well as a National Champion in Greco-Roman on the Cadet and Junior levels. In addition, he is a FILA Junior National Champion in Freestyle and placed third in the US Senior Freestyle Open and fourth in the Senior World Team Trials in 2009.
