No. 3 Buckeyes Drop 23-9 Decision to No. 2 Iowa State - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Facing eight wrestlers ranked in the Top 15, the No. 3 Ohio State wrestling team (10-1) dropped a 23-9 decision to No. 2 Iowa State Sunday in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The Buckeyes will face No. 5 Minnesota for third place in a Big Ten Conference matchup at 4 p.m. ET Sunday. The dual will be a rematch of the fifth-place matchup in the National Duals from a year ago, in which Ohio State won, 25-12. The Gophers suffered a 28-12 setback to Iowa in the other semifinal bout Sunday.

Against the Cyclones, the Scarlet and Gray received wins from No. 1 Reece Humphrey (141), No. 3 Lance Palmer (149) and No. 20 Dave Rella (174).

After trailing 7-0 early, not a trend the Buckeyes were wholly unfamiliar with during the National Duals - they overcame early deficits to Arizona State and Cornell Saturday - Humphrey secured a 6-5 decision against Dalton Jensen. Humphrey, a senior tri-captain, and Jensen were tied at 4-all in the middle of the second period before a takedown by Humphrey lifted him to a 6-4 lead. Jensen attempted to rally with an escape in the third period, but the Buckeye from Indianapolis, Ind., was able to hold off the comeback.

Also a senior tri-captain, Palmer won Ohio State's second consecutive match with his 4-3 decision over No. 10 Mitch Mueller. Following a scoreless first period, Palmer, a native of Columbia Station, Ohio, scored an escape in the second period for the slim 1-0 lead. Mueller took a 2-1 lead on a reversal in the final frame, but Palmer answered with an escape and takedown. A late escape by Mueller ended the scoring.

Down 7-6, the Buckeyes nearly took their first lead of the afternoon at the conclusion of the 157-pound match. Red-shirt freshman Tony Jameson dropped a close 12-9 decision to Andrew Sorenson. The two wrestlers entered the third period knotted up at 9-all. However, Sorenson was able to score a takedown in the final period, and coupled with a riding time advantage of 3:35, secured the win.

Ohio State would go on to drop four of its five remaining matches, including two tight contests at 184 pounds and heavyweight. At 174 pounds, Rella earned the Buckeyes' final win of the dual with his 3-1 decision against No. 14 Ryan Burk. With Rella and Burk tied, 1-1, at the end of regulation, the Buckeye from Akron, Ohio, scored a takedown in sudden victory.

Senior tri-captain Mike Pucillo and No. 11 Jerome Ward entered the third period even with two points apiece at 184 pounds, but Ward's reversal and riding time of 1:16 bettered Pucillo's third-period escape.

In the heavyweight matchup, senior Corey Morrison owned a 1-0 lead against No. 5 David Zabriskie heading into the third period. However, a pair of escapes and a takedown by the Cyclone lifted him to victory.

No. 3 Buckeyes Finish Third at National Duals with 26-12 Win over No. 5 Minnesota - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind six wins, the No. 3 Ohio State wrestling team (11-1) finished third in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Sunday after defeating No. 5 Minnesota, 26-12, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Buckeyes rebounded nicely from a semifinal loss to No. 2 Iowa State earlier in the day to return to double-digit scoring. Furthermore, aside from just the seven points it allowed against No. 15 Arizona State in the opening round of the National Duals, Ohio State gave up only 12 points to the Gophers.

After a 10-3 loss by junior Nikko Triggas at 125 pounds to sixth-ranked Zach Sanders, the Scarlet and Gray preceded to win five consecutive matches for a 17-3 lead. Freshman Ian Paddock began the streak at 133 pounds with his 6-4 decision over Thane Antczak. Paddock and Antczak entered the second period tied at 2-all, but the Golden Gopher took a 3-2 advantage on an escape. However, Antczak's lead would not last long because in the third period, Paddock scored a reversal for the one-point advantage. Antczak tied the score again at, 4-4, with an escape, but a two-point nearfall by the Buckeye from Warsaw, N.Y., sealed the victory.

Senior tri-captain Reece Humphrey downed No. 7 Mike Thorn, 5-3, at 141 pounds in a match that saw both wrestlers tied at 3 apiece in the waning minutes of the third period. The No. 1-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, Humphrey scored a crucial takedown in the third frame to become the first Buckeye to 20 wins this season.

Also a senior tri-captain, Lance Palmer went a perfect 4-0 at the National Duals after he beat No. 18 Mario Mason, 7-1, at 149 pounds. No. 3 in the latest InterMat standings, Palmer used a pair of takedowns, an escape, a Mason penalty and a riding time of 2:44 to earn his 17th win of the season.

Redshirt-freshman Tony Jameson was one of two Buckeyes to score bonus points against Minnesota with his 18-9 major decision over Joseph Grygelko at 157 pounds. Jameson's line featured the following - three-point nearfall, two-point nearfall, three takedowns, two reversals, two escapes and a riding time of 2:45.

Junior Colt Sponseller followed at 165 pounds with his 11-1 major decision vs. Nathan Matousek. An escape by Matousek in the third period ruined the shutout for the seventh-ranked Sponseller, but nonetheless he wrestled an impressive match that included a three-point nearfall, three takedowns, an escape and a riding time of 2:28.

Minnesota added points to the board in the 174-pound match as No. 20 Dave Rella suffered an 8-3 setback to No. 13 Scott Glasser. Down, 5-0, heading into the third period, Rella attempted to rally with an escape and takedown, but it was not enough.

Fans at the UNI-Dome were unable to see any action in the following match at 184 pounds as Minnesota forfeited the 184-pound bout. The Gophers put their final points on the board on a pin by Sonny Yohn over Buckeye Cody Magrum in 2:05.

With the Scarlet and Gray owning a solid 23-12 lead, senior heavyweight Corey Morrison wrapped up the day and the 2010 National Duals with his 9-4 decision over Ben Berhow. Morrison held Berhow scoreless in the third period after allowing just three escapes in the previous two (Morrison was called for his second caution in the second, awarding Berhow the fourth point). Meanwhile, the Buckeye from Shaker Heights, Ohio, amassed four takedowns and an escape in the win.

After competing in seven duals in two weekends, Ohio State will take a break from competition for a week. The Buckeyes return to action at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 against Penn State in St. John Arena to open Big Ten Conference action. The match will air on tape delay on the Big Ten Network at 7 p.m.

Ohio State 21 - Penn State 14

No. 4 Buckeyes Rally from Early Deficit to Defeat No. 13 Penn State, 21-14 - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After trailing 3-0 to start the match, the No. 4 Ohio State wrestling team won five of the next six bouts en route to defeating No. 13 Penn State, 21-14, Sunday in St. John Arena to open Big Ten Conference action.

The Buckeyes improve to 12-1 overall and move to 1-0 in the league. The Nittany Lions drop to 8-4-1 and 0-1 in the conference under first-year head coach Cael Sanderson.

After junior Nikko Triggas lost a close 9-7 decision to No. 12 Brad Pataky at 125 pounds, freshman 133-pounder Ian Paddock began the winning stretch for Ohio State with his 13-2 major decision over Bryan Pearsall. The Buckeye from Warsaw, N.Y., nearly shut out Pearsall, but the Nittany Lion was able to record a last minute reversal. Paddock now stands alone in second place on the team with six major decisions.

After going 2-2 at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals two weekends ago, No. 3 Reece Humphrey rebounded with an impressive 22-7 technical fall over Adam Lynch at 141 pounds. It was Humphrey's team-leading fourth technical fall of the season. In the match, Humphrey, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., recorded nine takedowns, a 2-point nearfall and escape. He complemented that line with a 3:16 riding time advantage.

Lance Palmer won the matchup at 149 pounds. In a bout that featured No. 3 vs. No. 5, the Buckeye from Columbia Station, Ohio, used a takedown and a reversal, as well as 1:28 riding time, to secure the 5-3 victory.

Up just 12-3, the Buckeyes' Tony Jameson suffered a 10-2 setback to No. 5 Cyler Sanderson at 157 pounds. However, back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, would give Ohio State an 18-7 cushion.

It was a battle of No. 7 vs. No. 8 at 165 pounds between Buckeye Colt Sponseller and Nittany Lion Dan Vallimont. Sponseller, who hails from Glenmont, Ohio, edged Vallimont, 4-2. Sponseller was down early, 2-0, but consecutive escapes made the score even. Back-to-back stalling calls on Vallimont gave Sponseller a 3-2 lead and coupled with a riding time of 1:34, the 4-2 win.

A 12-5 decision by No. 12 Dave Rella over Justin Ortega followed. After a scoreless first period, Rella recorded a pair of takedowns and an escape in the second period to Ortega's lone escape for the 5-1 lead heading into the final frame. Three more Rella takedowns and a 1:35 riding time sealed the Buckeye victory.

Penn State was able to cut Ohio State's lead to seven after TC Pendleton, who received the starting nod at 184 pounds, lost a 15-2 major decision to No. 12 David Erwin

However, at 197 pounds, C.J. Magrum recorded a 10-6 decision against David Crowell to put the Buckeyes ahead 21-11. The Buckeye from Oak Harbor, Ohio, had a 6-2 lead going into the second period, but Crowell made a comeback in the middle period as Magrum only owned a 6-5 lead. But a takedown, escape and a 3:53 riding time propelled him to his 13th win of the season.

In the final match of the afternoon, No. 20 Corey Morrison lost, 10-4, to No. 11 Cameron Wade.

Up next, Ohio State will travel to Purdue and Indiana Jan. 29 and Jan. 31, respectively. The Buckeyes and Boil?ermakers will wrestle at 7 p.m. in Holloway Gymna?sium. The Scarlet and Gray and Hoosiers will face each other at 2 p.m. in University Gymnasium.

No. 4 Buckeyes Move to 2-0 in Big Ten with 35-6 Win over Purdue - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The fourth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team won eight matches en route to a 35-6 win over Purdue Friday night at Holloway Gymnasium in West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes recorded a pin, technical fall and three major decisions to collect eight bonus points plus three because of a Boilermaker forfeit at 174 pounds.

The match will air on the Big Ten Network at 11 p.m. ET Friday night.

Ohio State moves to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten and Purdue is now 10-6 and 1-2 in the conference.

Seven consecutive wins from 133-184 pounds appeared to be the main storyline of the night - starting with freshman Ian Paddock's 8-0 shutout over Akif Eren to senior tri-captain Mike Pucillo's 13-1 major decision over Nick Corpe at 184 pounds.

Paddock, a native of Warsaw, N.Y., accumulated most of his points in the second period after a scoreless opening round. Paddock used an escape, takedown and a 2-point nearfall to take a five-point lead into the third period. He then sealed the victory with another takedown and a riding time of 1:36.

With the Buckeyes up 4-3, Reece Humphrey, also a senior tri-captain, had his hands full with Juan Archuleta at 141 pounds. Entering the match fourth on the team in wins with 22, Archuleta took Humphrey to sudden victory after both grapplers managed an escape a piece in regulation. However, Humphrey, a Lawrence North High School product out of Indianapolis, Ind., scored a takedown in sudden victory for his team-leading 22nd win of the year.

Lance Palmer, who is riding a 10-match win streak, beat Sam Patacsil, 10-1, at 149 pounds. The Buckeye senior tri-captain from Columbia Station, Ohio, jumped out to a 4-1 advantage after the first period. No scoring in the second period ensued, but Palmer scored a takedown, 3-point nearfall and compiled a riding time of 4:58 in the victory.

At 157 pounds, Tony Jameson secured his first-career Big Ten win against Colton Salazar, 5-2. Jameson, who hails from Youngstown, Ohio, was down, 2-1, entering the third period. A reversal in the final frame put the Buckeye up 3-2 and he never looked back. Two stalling calls on Salazar gave Jameson a point, coupled with a 2:52 riding time.

It was all Colt Sponseller vs. Jason Martin at 165 pounds as the Buckeye from Glenmont, Ohio, amassed eight takedowns, a 2-point nearfall, an escape and a riding time of 2:08 in the win. Sponseller also was awarded a point based on two Purdue stalls.

Purdue forfeited the 174-pound bout and Ohio State owned a 25-3 lead with three matches remaining.

At 184 pounds, Pucillo relinquished just an escape to Corpe in his 13-1 victory. In addition to collecting 3:33 of riding time, Pucillo, who hails from Strongsville, Ohio, recorded the following: four takedowns, 3-point nearfall and escape.

After a Boilermaker win at 197 pounds, senior heavyweight Corey Morrison ended the evening on a high note courtesy of his 5:20 pin of Adam Walls. The Buckeye from Shaker Heights, Ohio, owned a 9-2 lead on a pair of takedowns and escapes, as well as a 3-point nearfall, before the pin.

Junior 125-pounder Nikko Triggas dropped a 7-1 decision to Cash? Quiroga and C.J. Magrum suffered a 4-0 setback to No. 10 Logan Brown at 197 pounds.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Backed by six wins, the No. 4 Ohio State wrestling team defeated No. 14 Indiana, 22-13, Sunday afternoon at University Gym in Bloomington, Ind. The Buckeyes remain perfect in the Big Ten at 3-0 (14-1 overall) and the Hoosiers fall to 13-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Scarlet and Gray will return to action at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 vs. Michigan in St. John Arena. The match will be broadcasted on same-day tape delay by the Big Ten Network at 11 p.m. ET.

Trailing 4-0 entering the 133-pound match, freshman Ian Paddock scored the Buckeyes' first points of the afternoon thanks to a 6-5 decision over Matt Ortega. The Buckeye from Warsaw, N.Y., held 4-1 and 6-3 leads, respectively, after the first and second periods. However, Ortega would attempt to rally on a takedown with 38 seconds left in the match to cut Paddock's lead to one, but Paddock would hold on for his 18th win of the season.

Up next at 141 pounds, No. 2 Reece Humphrey downed Nick Viterisi, 17-6. With an 8-2 lead heading into the final frame, Humphrey, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., began his domination in the third period en route to the 17-6 final. The senior tri-captain is now 23-2 on the year.

No. 3 Lance Palmer hit the 20-win mark against Matt Coughlin with his 11-0 major decision. A 3-point nearfall as time expired in the second period gave Palmer, a senior tri-captain from Columbia Station, Ohio, an 8-0 advantage. A takedown, coupled with riding time, not only gave Palmer the win, but the Buckeyes an 11-4 team lead.

Sean Nemec returned to the lineup at 157 pounds for the Scarlet and Gray and faced tough competition in No. 6 Kurt Kinser. Hailing from Garfield Heights, Ohio, Nemec, at one point, had a 4-1 lead in the first period and 5-2 advantage in the second, but Kinser recorded a takedown en route to rallying for the 8-5 win.

With Ohio State up by just three (11-7), No. 7 Colt Sponseller's 5-1 decision over No. 13 Paul Young proved pivotal. Sponseller, a native of Glenmont, Ohio, collected a pair of takedowns, including a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match, and an escape in his 20th win of the year.

At 174 pounds, No. 12 Dave Rella defeated Trevor Perry, 8-3. The Buckeye from Akron, Ohio, owned a 3-0 lead after two periods and then scored two takedowns and compiled enough riding time in the final period to secure the victory.

Mike Pucillo, a senior tri-captain who is ranked No. 9 in the nation, scored a 17-2 technical fall over Eric Cameron to put the Buckeyes ahead, 22-7. The native of Strongsville, Ohio, already had a 12-1 lead entering the second period. He then tried to record his eighth pin of the season, but had to settle for five team points.

Pucillo would be the last Buckeye to score points as C.J. Magrum (197) and Corey Morrison (285) dropped 4-0, and 2-0 decisions, respectively. Nikko Triggas also lost a 15-5 major decision at 125 pounds to open the match.

No. 4 Buckeyes Win Third Straight against Michigan with 29-9 Victory - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The fourth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team improved to 15-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten following a 29-9 win against Michigan Friday evening in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes, who at one point had dropped 14-consecutive matches to the Wolverines (1994-2007), have now won three-straight against Michigan (4-11; 0-3 Big Ten).

Ohio State returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday in St. John Arena when it hosts Northwestern in continued conference action.

The Scarlet and Gray jumped out to an early 6-0 lead following junior Nikko Triggas' 5:57 pin against Sean Boyle at 125 pounds. It was a close match starting with a scoreless first period. Boyle opened scoring with a reversal, but the Buckeye from Moraga, Calif., countered with a reversal of his own to tie the score. Triggas then took a two-point lead after recording a 2-point nearfall, but Boyle again scored a reversal before being awarded a point on Triggas' second penalty of the match. Triggas was able to record an escape to finish out scoring in the second period and it was in the third period he was able to secure the pin with 1:03 left.

After beginning his Big Ten career 3-0, freshman Ian Paddock suffered a close 6-5 setback at 133 pounds. Paddock, a native from Warsaw, N.Y., and Wolverine Zac Stevens entered the third period tied at 4-all, but a Stevens' reversal in the third locked up the Michigan win despite Paddock's escape to cut the deficit to one.

With Ohio State up 6-3, senior team captain Reece Humphrey increased the Buckeye advantage to 11-3 following his 25-9 technical fall over Mark Weber at 141 pounds. In all, Humphrey, who hails from Indianapolis, Ind., amassed 11 takedowns, a 2-point nearfall and a riding time of 3:36. Humphrey now has a team-leading 24 wins in 2009-10.

More Buckeye bonus points would ensue as fellow team captain Lance Palmer recorded a 19-7 major decision over Mark Boyer at 149 pounds. Entering the second period with a slim 2-0 lead, the Columbia Station, Ohio, native scored an escape and proceeded to collect eight consecutive takedowns en route to his 21st win of the season.

A reversal and 2-point nearfall in the third period propelled redshirt-freshman Tony Jameson to victory at 157 pounds. With Jameson and David Johnson knotted up at three a piece entering the third period, the Buckeye from Youngstown, Ohio, got the better of the Wolverine for the 7-3 triumph.

At 165 pounds, junior Colt Sponseller used nine takedowns, an escape and 1:51 riding time in his 20-8 win over Aaron Hynes. With the major decision, Ohio State took a 22-3 lead.

174-pounder Dave Rella is now one win away from his 20th victory of the season after his 6-1 decision over Justin Zeerip. Neither wrestler was able to score in the first period, but the Buckeye senior from Akron, Ohio, countered Zeerip's escape in the second period with a takedown. Choosing bottom in the third period, Rella won the escape and soon scored another takedown and compiled a riding time of 1:43.

A 17-7 major decision by senior team captain Mike Pucillo over Hunter Montoya wrapped up scoring for Ohio State. Pucillo, who hails from Strongsville, Ohio, collected win No. 16 on the season courtesy of six takedowns, a 2-point nearfall, two escapes and 1:41 riding time.

At 197 and 285 pounds, C.J. Magrum and Corey Morrison dropped 6-1 and 10-8 decisions, respectively.

Heard that Morrison was sick, to the extent that he even threw up in the 3rd. Paddock looked sluggish, hope he bounces back on Sunday. Glad to see Triggas turn things around a bit.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 4/3 Ohio State wrestling team (17-1; 6-0 Big Ten) won eight consecutive matches for a 34-0 lead en route to beating No. 18 Illinois (8-7; 3-4), 38-3, in Huff Hall Friday night.

Receiving pins from Nikko Triggas (125), Lance Palmer (149) and Colt Sponseller (165), the Buckeyes have now scored 30-plus points in three Big Ten matches and 11 total in 2009-10.

The heavyweight match began the evening and Corey Morrison secured a 9-3 win over Pat Walker to give the Buckeyes an early 3-0 lead. After two periods, Morrison, a Shaker Heights, Ohio, native held a slim 2-1 advantage. The Buckeye senior then increased his lead to 5-1 following an escape to open the final period and a takedown seconds later. A second stalling call on Walker awarded Morrison a point before another takedown pushed Morrison's lead to 8-3. Walker was able to avoid the major decision despite Morrison's minute-plus riding time for the final tally.

For the third consecutive match, Triggas pinned his opponent at 125 pounds. This time, the Moraga, Calif., native downed John Deneen in 1:56 for his 11th fall of the season. Triggas took sole possession of sixth place in the program's all-time career falls list with 33.

Freshman Ian Paddock recorded a 16-7 major decision at 133 pounds over Daryl Thomas, rebounding from a 0-2 weekend last week. Already up 9-0 entering the second period, Paddock, who hails from Warsaw, N.Y., quickly took a 14-2 lead heading into the final frame and closed the match out with a takedown.

At 141 pounds, Reece Humphrey was down early, 3-2, against Ryan Prater, who also collected 43 seconds of riding time in the first period. In the second period with Humphrey deferring, Prater chose bottom and recorded the escape for the 4-2 lead. However, the Buckeye from Indianapolis, Ind., collected a pair of takedowns and 2-point nearfalls to take a 10-5 lead. From that point, Humphrey never looked back with two more takedowns in the third period and won, 14-9.

Palmer, a Columbia Station, Ohio, native, put six more points on the board for the Scarlet and Gray at 149 pounds when he pinned Eric Terrazas in 2:54.

With the Buckeyes up 22-0, sophomore Sean Nemec received the starting nod at 157 pounds and quickly made the score 25-0 courtesy of his 7-4 decision against Clint Arlis. Up 5-2 going into the third period, Nemec sealed the win with a final takedown.

Sponseller, a 165-pound junior was up 4-1 after the first period and 8-3 following the second. The Buckeye from Glenmont, Ohio, also had already amassed a riding time of 1:12 with another two minutes of wrestling to go. In the third, Sponseller recorded an escape and two more takedowns before pinning Joe Barczak at 6:20.

Seven minutes of wrestling was not enough for senior Dave Rella and Jordan Blanton. The two were knotted up at 4-4 after regulation, but in sudden victory Rella, a native of Akron, Ohio, scored the takedown for the 6-4 win and the 34-0 Buckeye lead.

The premier match of the night at 184 pounds with No. 7 vs. No. 2, Buckeye Mike Pucillo and Illini John Dergo ended the first period in a scoreless tie. Dergo chose bottom in the second period and quickly recorded the escape for the 1-0 lead. Dergo then ended the period with a 3-0 advantage following a takedown, but Pucillo scored an escape to cut the lead to 3-1 heading into the third. Choosing bottom in the final period, the Buckeye from Strongsville, Ohio, escaped, but Dergo scored another escape and with riding time, beat Pucillo, 6-2.

C.J. Magrum and Clinton Polz concluded the evening and Magrum (Oak Harbor, Ohio) finished on a high note - a 16-5 major decision to push the final to 38-3.

Dominating victory so I don't want to be too negative, but here are my thoughts:

125 - 3 pins in a row for Nikko which is good to see, though, he's always been hot and cold. I think he'll make it four pins in a row on Sunday, and hopefully he keep it to a decision against McDonough.

133 - Paddock looked great for most of the match then seemed to get tired/lose focus at the end. Seems to be hurting at the end of matches lately, may be cutting too much weight.

141 - Huge second period for Reece, but did not start or end the match well. Still, can't complaint too much about a 5 point victory over a solid opponent.

149 - Lance has been on fire lately; can't wait to him face Metcalf.

157 - Good win for Nemec; this weight will key against Iowa.

165 - Like Lance, Colt has been on a roll. He is due to finally beat Morningstar.

174 - Another win over a solid opponent for Rella. He has been much improved this year and hopefully he can keep it up.

184 - This match leaves a sour taste in my mouth, even in a 38-3 win. I think Dergo has proved he is legit this year, but seeing Mike lose in this fashion is disheartening. If the Bucks want to make some serious noise at Nationals, they really need Mike to get back on track.

197 - Can't take too much away from this match. Cody beat a not very good guy who was giving up 14 pounds to him due to Bond scratching. Still, he did what he was supposed to do.

285 - Just about as I expected. Corey usually beats he is supposed to and loses to the rest.

Should be another blowout against MSU. Gomez will probably pin Paddock at 133, but I see tOSU winning the rest unless Pucillo sits out.

No. 4/3 Ohio State Earns 18th Win of Season with 30-7 Victory over Michigan State - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Not only has the Ohio State wrestling team won seven consecutive Big Ten matches this season, but the No. 4/3 Buckeyes (18-1; 7-0) also own a 13-match conference win streak that dates back to 2008-09 following their 30-7 win over Michigan State Sunday in St. John Arena.

The Buckeyes will look to run the table next Friday when they travel to Iowa City to face the No. 1 team in the nation in the Iowa Hawkeyes. That match is slated for an 8 p.m. ET start in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes face No. 5 Minnesota at 7 p.m. ET Sunday.

Wrestling for the last time in front of family and friends in St. John Arena, seniors Corey Morrison, Lance Palmer, Mike Pucillo and Dave Rella all won their final matches in the historic venue. Reece Humphrey did not wrestle because of injury.

The afternoon began at 125 pounds and just like the previous three matches, junior Nikko Triggas pinned his opponent; this time Brenan Lyon was down in 2:25. The Buckeye from Moraga, Calif., now has 12 falls on the season for a career 34, good for fifth place in the program's record book.

After dropping matches at 133 and 141 pounds, the Scarlet and Gray faced a slim 7-6 deficit, but would win the remaining seven matches.

At 149 pounds, Palmer helped Ohio State regain the lead (12-7) when he pinned No. 12 David Cheza in 4:51. A team captain from Columbia Station, Ohio, Palmer is second (tie) on the team in falls with seven after back-to-back pins this weekend.

Sean Nemec scored his second-consecutive Big Ten win Sunday when he beat Anthony Jones, Jr., 6-0, at 157 pounds. Nemec, a sophomore from Garfield Heights, Ohio, continuously increased his advantage, taking a 2-0 lead after the first and building it to 3-0 following the second. Another takedown in the final two minutes, coupled with a 1:08 riding time gave him his second straight win and 13th overall this season.

Junior Colt Sponseller only gave up an escape in his 7-1 decision over Kyle Bounds at 165 pounds. Sponseller, a native of Glenmont, Ohio, used two takedowns, an escape and riding time to secure the victory. (Sponseller was awarded a point on a second called MSU warning).

For the second-straight dual match and third this season, Rella wrestled into extra time before winning. Up against Ian Hinton, the two grapplers traded escapes throughout regulation. It was in the one-minute sudden victory, Rella recorded the takedown for the 3-1 win. The native of Akron, Ohio, is 3-0 in dual matches this season in sudden victory.

Pucillo rebounded from a loss Friday and beat Curran Jacobs, 12-6, at 184 pounds. A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Pucillo built a 9-2 lead after the second period and finished the match with a final takedown and riding time of 3:30 for his 17th victory of the season.

C.J. Magrum held on for a 3-1 win over Tyler Dickenson at 197 pounds to give the Buckeyes a 27-7 advantage. Despite an escape by Dickenson in the third period to cut Magrum's lead to two points, the Buckeye from Oak Harbor, Ohio, halted any rally attempt from the Spartan.

Morrison wrapped up the afternoon and his collegiate career in Columbus with an 11-4 decision over Alan O'Donnell at heavyweight. A fifth-year graduate student, Morrison jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period. However, O'Donnell scored a reversal in the next period to cut Morrison's lead to 4-3. The Buckeye from Shaker Heights, Ohio, countered with an escape and takedown to go up 7-3. Choosing bottom in the final period, Morrison recorded another escape. He then scored a crucial takedown in an attempt at bonus points (Morrison also owned riding time), but O'Donnell managed an escape as time ticked off the clock.

Ian Paddock and Pat Harrington suffered setbacks at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Facing No. 4 and reigning NCAA champion Franklin Gomez, Paddock lost 14-2. Filling in for Humphrey, Harrington dropped a 7-2 decision to Dan Osterman.

Thanks stkoran, for posting these. Next Friday night we go to Iowa for the big showdown and Big Ten dual meet crown. The Hawkeyes will be favored in at least seven matches. In other words, the Buckeyes will need some upsets. Are we ready to topple reigning champs? Most would say we are a year or two away, but I'm thinking we're close enough to make it a whole lotta fun. Go Bucks!!

I haven't seen any word on what happened to Reece but he didn't look when he came out for the Senior Day recognition. He was putting absolutely no weight on that injured leg. I don't know that we could beat Iowa anyways, but without Humphrey we dont stand a chance.

My predictions for the match, assuming Humphrey wrestles at 100%:

125- Triggas is going to get worked. We'll call it a major and hope it isn't a tech fall. 0-4
133- Paddock has wrestled pretty well for a freshman. Hopefully he can avoid the pin. Assuming both the first two are at least majors, hopefully no worse. 0-8 Iowa.
141- If Hump is healthy, he should be able to pull this one out. But only if he is completely healthy, cause Marion will come after. And I don't see how he is going to be healthy after what we saw on Sunday. I'll assume he is so that we have a chance. 3-8 tOSU
149- 1 v 2, Palmer vs. Metcalf. Palmer has never beaten Metcalf and Metcalf hasn't lost this season. But Palmer is wrestling incredible well right now. It'll be a hell of a match. If we are going to have a shot vs. Iowa its one we will have to pull out, and I think we just might. 6-8 Iowa.
157- Interesting match at 157, and one we absolutely have to pull out to win the dual. Nemec has been wrestling pretty well of late. Kerr is not great, but he did beat the 4th ranked Cyler Sanderson a few weeks ago, so he can wrestle really well. We'll say Nemec wins it for our sake, although it could very easily go the other way. 9-8 OSU.
165- Sponseller and Morningstar will be another great match-up that we will need to win in order to take the dual. I think Colt has it in him, but it certainly wont be easy. We'll say he wins a great one, 12-8 tOSU.
174- Rella has been wrestling very well for us this season for sure, and he has shown the ability to pull off a big upset. But he really isn't in Borschel's league and, barring an incredible match from him, wont win this one. 12-11 tOSU.
184- Pucillo and Keddy will be an excellent match of what could be the two best wrestlers at the weight class. Neither are top 5 ranked, but both have been battling injury this year and both will be favored to make a deep run in the tournament. Pucillo has beat him in the past and should do so again, although he has been very inconsistent this year. 15-11 tOSU.
197- Beatty is very good and Magrum will be overmatched. Hope he keeps it to a major. 15-15
HWT- Short of Morrison wrestling out of his mind, we lose this one. Morrison beats who he is supposed to beat and loses the ones he is supposed to lose, and he is supposed to lose this one. 18-15 Iowa.

If we win every single toss-up match, the best I see us doing is losing by 3. I could very easily see us not winning a single match in this dual. I don't think that will happen, but it could. We aren't clearly favored in any match, and are decided underdogs at 125, 133, 197, and HWT. Personally, my guess is Hump doesn't wrestle and we win two of 149, 157, and 165, and win 184, and call it 25-9 Iowa. If Hump doesn't wrestle, I'm not devastated by that.

As much as a I hate to say this, with Hump most likely being out or hurt at a minimum, I think we are going to get shut out.

125 - McDonough over Triggas by Major, if not worse.
133 - Paddock held Gomez to a Major, and I think he'll do the same with Dennis.
141 - Marion pins Harrington if that's who we wrestle, or gets an easy decision over an injured Reece.
149 - Lance has been just killing people, but he's never beaten Metcalf. I see something like 5-4 Metcalf.
157 - Kerr's decision over Sanderson gives him the edge in this match, as he has proved he can beat a top dog. Nemec/Jamison solid, but haven't reached that level yet.
165 - Seems like Colt always loses a close, low scoring affair to Morningstar. Hope that changes, but my guess is 3-2 Morningstar.
174 - Borschel is having a phenomenal season and I don't think Rella really has a chance. He'll keep it to a decision, though.
184 - I'd like to pick Mike, especially with Keddy struggling, but he just hasn't shown that he can beat an AA type guy lately. I've gotta take Keddy by decision.
197 - Lofthouse over Cody 8-4.
285 - Morrison never beats anyone better than him, and Erekson is better.

Likelihood of an OSU win by weight (from most to least likely, assuming no Hump)

165
184
149
157
197
285
174
125
133
141

Iowa is just a brutal match up for us. They only have two "bad" weights, but those coincide with where we are also weak. And where we are strong, they are at their best. The match I would really like to see is a full-strength Ohio State v. a full-strength Minnesota. I would see that match going something like this:

125 - Sanders MDec Triggas; 0-4
133 - Ness WBF Paddock; 0-10
141 - Humphrey Dec Thorn; 3-10
149 - Palmer WBF Mason; 9-10
157 - Schlatter Dec Nemec; 9-13
165 - Sponseller MDec Yohn; 13-13
174 - Glasser Dec Rella; 13-16
184 - Pucillo MDec Young; 17-16
197 - Yohn Dec Magrum; 17-19
285 - Berhow Dec Morrison; 17-22

174 and 285 would be the key matches in terms of outcome, while bonus points would be key in the other matches. Fun to think about, too bad we get Iowa instead.

Dang! You guys are a real downer - total buzzkill. Unfortunately, you're probably also realistic. We're still a year or two away. Makes me wonder, if Humphrey is out, thereby eliminating any legitimate chance to win the dual, whether the other feature matches - at 149, 165, and 184 - will even happen. Do we go for the statement match now, or save it for the Big Ten Tourney? More than anything, I would love to see Palmer take Metcalf out.
