Regarding Mallet, there were rumors of him being homesick and wanting to transfer even before the ASU debacle. In 2007 Spring, there were rumors of him wanting to transfer. He didn't transfer then, but it was a generally held notion that he couldn't take the cold, at least as far as I read. I believe even Carr said something along those lines.

Additionally, there were several times during the 2007 season when he gave Carr attitude. Given that, it seems to me that Mallet might have decided to transfer even before the season was complete. Just didn't tell anyone about it. RR might've run Boren and others off the team, but I don't know if I would put the blame of running off Mallet on RR.

Now excuse me while I go throw up for defending a scUMmer.

The game really did turn on some fluke plays. Toledo's touchdown came on a pickoff in the endzone. Not a fluke like a crazy bouncing ball or something, but not what you'd expect. Lopata missed a 26-yard field goal, how often does that happen? It's not "OK", but then again RR was not hired for this year. I'll trade losing to Toledo now if it means we don't have to put up with the slow decline to mediocrity we were experiencing starting around 2004.

Don't forget the game's last points coming on a Toledo FG that bounced on the crossbar on its way through.

Hey, occasionally we can say something that actually supports one of your arguments.

Both are true. Ryan had attitude issues, but RR didn't really try to keep him.

I'm very relieved that Mallett transferred. It saved me about 100 hours of video research I would have had to do in order to set up the vBet for whether or not Brent Musburger would have more on-the-air mentions of "Big Tex" than he had for "A-Train" during actual TSUN games.

So it sounds like Carr did a good enough job of getting him to stay. But he probably tried some crazy old fashioned method like talking to him or asking him to stay. DickRod doesn't have time for that shit.....he's got a gimmicky offense to teach.

I thought he was the mastermind behind Shaun King. Surely I wasn't misled by the Michigan fans.

There's no reason to ask Mallett to run DickRod's offense.....but here's the thing:
1. Dick Rod runs off Mallett (yes he ran him off. If you think he put any effort into trying to get the kid to stay, you're fooling yourself)
2. The offense is [censored] with a [censored]ty QB
3. Dick Rod gets a pass because "the cupboard was left bare"?

That's bull[censored]. The cupboard had a perfectly capable 5* soph QB with starting experience. He probably doesn't lead Michigan to an undefeated season to this point in the year....but he sure as hell would be better than any available option right now.

Sorry....It's a bull[censored] excuse. The cupboard wasn't bare, the dip[censored] they chose to hire emptied it out. [censored] him.
That's the falsest thing I've heard this whole discussion. RR specifically made an effort to keep Mallett around. Mallett was talking transfer the day after RR was hired. RR spent plenty of time in between then and January 9 to try and get him to stay. You're the one fooling yourself - Mallett is the one he tried hardest to keep.

There is some merit to moving on, however. It might have been best to let Ryan go and take their lumps with guys committed for the long haul, even if they were struggling.

Also, if Ryan had any success running a passing spread (assuming they actually used one), would it make it harder to recruit the '09 dual threats? If you benched him next season for two youngsters who could run (but probably not pass at well, given the frosh vs 3 years of "starting" experience), how would that look?

RR knew there were going to be some rough times this season (though I'm not sure he knew the extent of it). A malcontent could make that worse, and Ryan needed some coddling at times (the opposite of RR's style).

Total bullshit. You're buying into a load of crap if you believe that.

Peace is still committed, per Dad. OU's pursuit turned him off by slow-playing. Peace decommitted from UM due to negative recruiting (RR will not pass), but has retracted that and is solid again.
Scout $

WR Peace still committed but weighing his options, going to visit Ariz St (offered), Oklahoma, possibly others. Also talking with UCLA, Kansas (right behind UM). UM's struggles just mean they need help to him.

Doesn't sound very solid.

Threet injures elbow again
Quarterback sits out third quarter, then returns, but Sheridan shows little in relief.

Threet suffered a bruised elbow in the Toledo game and did not play in the second half.

He was listed as questionable during the week, but did start against Penn State. In the first half, he rushed 10 times for 47 yards and threw for 73 yards to help the Wolverines take a 17-14 halftime lead.

Early in the second half, however, Threet was reinjured when sacked by Penn State's Maurice Evans for a 6-yard loss. Nick Sheridan played the rest of the third quarter.

"Same thing happened to (Threet) -- he lost complete feeling in it and couldn't throw," U-M quarterbacks coach Rod Smith said. "We sat him out a series and tried to rehab it, he said he got some feeling back in, and we brought him back, and he got hit on it again."

Threet sat out two series before returning in the fourth quarter. On the third play of the drive, he took his second sack of the game, this time from Aaron Maybin. Threet fumbled, giving the Nittany Lions the ball at the U-M 20, and they eventually scored on a 1-yard run.

"We're just trying to keep him healthy," Smith said. "The kid's fighting, I'll give him that. We just have to keep him healthy."

Smith said maybe the coaches consider running Threet less -- he had 14 carries for 50 yards in the game -- but the injury came on a pass play.

"The thing is, Steve didn't get hurt on a run, he got hurt when he was throwing," Smith said. "He got hit on a sack, on a play-action, the kid came from the back side, and that's when he hurt it. He ran the ball well. He likes doing that once in a while."
The drop-off at quarterback is the issue now. Sheridan, who started the season opener, entered with the game tied and took a safety, giving Penn State its first lead. He was 3-of-9 for 5 yards and clearly struggled, as did the entire offense.

"We've got to find some plays somehow once Steve goes out," Smith said. "I thought Steve did some good things. We've got to get someone to step up and get ready to fill his shoes if he's not in there."

A few weeks ago, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said freshman quarterback Justin Feagin likely would be redshirted. Feagin also had begun taking repetitions at slot receiver. But during the last week, Feagin was back working with the quarterbacks. He was seen warming up on the sideline after Threet went out, and there was some thought of using him.

"We thought about going with Justin, we had a package for him, but the circumstances and the course of the game, we didn't quite get to it," Smith said, "We were prepared to play Justin sparingly."
Butler moves

Earlier in the week, tight end Carson Butler , who has moved down the depth chart and is behind Kevin Koger and Mike Massey , asked to move to defensive end.

Rodriguez confirmed Butler's move during his pregame radio show, but said Butler is a few weeks from playing.

When asked after the game if Butler had moved to defense, Rodriguez was vague.

"He ain't playing tight end, because Kevin Koger is the starter at tight end, and Mike Massey is the backup," Rodriguez said.

"Those were two rival schools. It wasn't quite 100,000 in the stands. There were about 1,000, and I was related to half of them, but that was pretty intense."
-RR

Video: Monday UM Presser - Talks about MSU game/rivalry - MLive.com

Talking about emotional state going into next game:

Ah they're okay... I addressed that yesterday, I said 'Jeez, it's a ball game, it's an event. It's not who they are, it's not life altering, it's a game and unfortunately the games have not gone the way we've wanted them to the last several weeks. But for them to walk around with their heads down or think the sky is falling, it's an event. I told them I didn't want them to hear anything about them being down or what their mindset is and all of that. We have to be mentally

I chuckled watching him re-phrase the words he used towards his players, looking down for the words that could be aired somewhere besides HBO.

What do you know about the MSU-UM rivalry?

"...Obviously I know about the rivalry. If you've coached here, you've coached there, you understand it. 'Bout that big Paul Bunyan Trophy? Sucker's pretty big, it's sitting in our hallway."

"...I've known Dantonio for years from their days at Cincy/WVU."

"[the winning tradition vs MSU] is not going to help you get a first down."

Then some very unconvincing coach-speak (praise) of an upcoming opponent.
