2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

That was the nice thing for Terrelle in the first half....he had time to throw because of the respect USC had to show him because of his wheels. They just tee'd off on Todd.

Terrelle also made some nice reads and throws in the first half. Especially when he surveyed the field and hit Sanzenbacher for 11 or 12. He had all day to throw on that one....

A healthy Beanie will sure make a Freshman QB with wheels look even better.

Say it ain't so!!

Another year down the drain! I thought Boeckman would be better but I was wrong I also thought our O line was going to be better I was wrong. It is time for Todd to become a back up player as he should be!! And the coaches on both sides of the ball need to get it together A.S.A.P.!!:osu:

Senior Todd Boeckman began the season as starter, but his struggles against Southern California loosened his grip on the position.

CHRIS RUSSELL | dispatch
Freshman Terrelle Pryor was expected to play a change-of-pace role this season, but his rapid progression has earned him increased playing time.

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has decided it's time to break glass in case of emergency. In this case, he's breaking the glass ceiling on quarterback Terrelle Pryor's playing time.
Coming into the season, fifth-year senior Todd Boeckman was the unquestioned starter, based on his command of the offense and his 11-2 record in 2007.
Pryor, the hotshot incoming freshman, would certainly play but in a change-of-pace relief role.
That all changed after last week's 35-3 drubbing at Southern California. Tressel was disappointed in Boeckman's mistakes, most notably an interception returned for a touchdown and taking a sack and fumbling the ball away.
Yesterday, Tressel threw the job wide open, saying Boeckman and Pryor would likely split the snaps 50-50 this Saturday for the 13th-ranked Buckeyes (2-1) against Troy University (2-0). He did not name a starter.

After reading about the teams reactions to Todd and TP(they all stood when he was on the field), and thinking about the role of leadership. I am revising my thoughts on a starting QB. The defense has plenty of leaders.
The offense has lacked leadership with Beanie out. The offense needs Pryor's leadership on the field. Teach the crap out of Pryor with more reps and field time. He will pick up the offense till Beanie can lend a hand with leadership. Get them both on the field and it should really be fun to watch! A rotation gives Pryor the time to see things and get coached up.
The team believes in Pryor. That is more important than experience. He has become a team leader by example.

Great quarterback debate begins at Ohio State
Pryor earns increased practice opportunities
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS ? Ohio State's Jim Tressel has stuck religiously with the core principles that have brought him success through his more than 30 years of coaching in college football.

But the current quarterback situation with the Buckeyes has put the Tressel doctrine under increased scrutiny.

The sticky predicament he finds himself in now involves senior Todd Boeckman and freshman Terrelle Pryor.

Who do you hand the car keys to, for an offense that has sputtered the last two weeks while running without the injured Chris 'Beanie' Wells at tailback.

The Buckeyes (2-1) will host Troy on Saturday and are coming off a humbling 35-3 loss to top-ranked Southern California that has spawned a spirited quarterback discussion, if not a budding controversy.

Tressel said yesterday, if the game took place that night, he would have expected Boeckman and Pryor to split the snaps 50-50. His quick addendum said the division of the workload this Saturday could be impacted by what takes place at practice the remainder of the week and by what transpires in the game against Troy.

Tressel always has preferred experience over exuberance. He likes to play guys he knows and trusts, and the more age rings on their college football trunk, the better.

And he likes his quarterbacks to be great decision-makers before they are great players, and in spite Boeckman's three turnovers at USC, Tressel said he still has confidence in Boeckman.

'What we have to work on is what we are doing in the game of football, that we need to do better,' Tressel said yesterday in a meeting with the media at the team's indoor practice facility. 'No one has changed any thinking about who they are.'

Wednesday eye-opener: Changes in Buckeyes backfield

Buzz up!

Good morning.
Is Terrelle Pryor about to take over the Ohio State quarterback job?
That might be more on Buckeye fans minds than even the health of running back Chris Wells.
No one is as popular as the backup quarterback when things go wrong. And with Ohio State losing badly to USC last weekend the chorus grows louder to bring Pryor, USA TODAY's High School Offensive Player of the Year in 2007, into the game plan.
Buckeye fans know he threw for 4,000 yards and ran for 4,000 yards in high school and he adds a level of excitement whenever he touches the ball. (Photo by Lucy Nicholson, Reuters)
Bob Hunter of the Columbus Dispatch believes the freshman closes the talent gap.
But the only voice that matters is coach Jim Tressel and he's talking about giving the freshman some running room.
Right now the plan is to have Pryor take 65% of the snaps in practice with senior Todd Boeckman, whose career numbers are pretty solid, taking the other 35%.
?Terrelle has progressed with the lack of snaps in practice and the game more than you think he would,? Tressel said. ?I?ve seen a freshman get kind of thrown into the fire and grow every practice and grow every game because he got so much experience. I?ve seen him grow with a little bit less experience, which means he?s done a good job of learning by observing, which is the hardest thing for a player to do.?

Unfortunately, I think we could hear some boo birds in the Shoe on Saturday if Boeckman struggles at all. I'm not advocating it because I don't believe in booing my team, but I think some fans' patience with TB is very thin at this point, especially with Pryor on the roster. Then again, maybe that's my own personal feelings coming through.

I like Todd, but I think he's reached his potential while Pryor has plenty of room for growth. I also think Beanie's absence magnifies Todd's weaknesses, putting too much reliance on pocket passing alone. It's tough saying that because I was hoping for a Leak/Tebow type of run this year by TB/TP, but I don't see that working at this point. People fear mistakes by the true frosh, and for good reason, but when the 6th year senior is making them...

Exactly........ I agree 100%. If we are going to endure mistakes at the QB spot, might as well have it come from a freshman who is only going to get substantially better.

I'm all for Terrell starting... NOW. I saw one play early in the game where he was on the verge of a stupid freshman mistake, an option to his left, he was in the grasp and for one brief moment he put his arm out to make the pitch and then that inner voice went off and he tucked the ball back in. He didn't make the mistake this time. He's going to make a mistake or two like that in the future and it's apt to cost us a big game, but he's going to have to be ready for Michigan, a bowl game and all of next year. Let's start that building program NOW.

I can empathize with Todd, but from where I sit it's Zwick or Smith all over again. JT waited too long on Smith (twice). I don't see him making that mistake again.

I was thinking that same thing. It's early enough in the season to get this thing rolling before it's too late.

There were some boo's in the Shoe when we played OU, I don't see them leaving after the USC performance. I just hope Todd isn't boo'd when he takes the field. :(

How do you figure? Anyone who's a "National Championship or Bust"-type is going to lead a very depressed life.

There's still the chance to:

1) Beat Michigan.
2) Win the Big 10 Championship FOR THE THIRD TIME IN A ROW (which is unprecedented).
3) Go Bowling (and hopefully another BCS).

I was on an ND site last night and a poster said OSU reminds him of Nebraska before Tommy Frazier... Went sort of like this,

Great coach, very good players and a young soon to be great QB sitting on the bench that just needs some time.

If we end up having as much success as '95 Nebraska, I'd be a pig in shit.
