2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

True. The best thing for TP is more reps. But, at what cost? Do you let him throw interceptions because he can't read defenses yet and take the losses? That would go over real well with alumni and fans wouldn't it.
Clearly, you ease him in as much as you can without costing games. That means Todd starts and TP gets reps when he can safely. This season isn't even close to done. We will qualify for a BCS game. Maybe more.
Don't throw this season away just to get TP ready for next year.

Todd has the all important game experience that can't be duplicated.

Yeah, we all saw how that "all important game experience" paid dividends on Saturday.

IMO, Pryor plays with unprecedented poise for a freshman, along with extreme fire, intensity and, dare I say, SWAGGER, all of which were evident with his run-in with Taylor Mays.

From what I've seen they need to simplify the offense for TP. Give him a couple reads per pass and take off if both are covered. I would much rather see this than the QB sweep that they have been running. The sweep seems to be much easier to defend than TP taking off after looking for an open receiver. I also really want to see the bootleg added to the regular running plays. The defense would have to stay honest if you roll TP out the back side on every run play whether he has the ball or not.

While I hear where you are coming from I am hesitant to take Todds side at this point. Not because of yesterdays performance, but based on last year. Todd was kicking ass til the Michigan State game, then he threw a few picks and the wheels just came off. I hope we don't have a repeat, but I expect the coaches to have him on a short leash for that very reason.

Any better than TB doing the same thing? TB is a target back there right now because defenses know he's not mobile and easily rattled. Pryor at least provides the mobility to make something of a busted play. He's not gonna have to face another D like USC's for a while either. Wiscy has a strong D, but not as good. The closest thing may be PSU, but they're down the road a bit. And we don't really know where his passing is at because we haven't seen it. Also, the team just seems to react to him better and he has that "fire" that Todd is clearly lacking right now.

While I agree that he shouldn't be tossed out there full on, the QB rotation is accomplishing nothing. It's preventing him from getting a full head of steam.

Agreed, it's not close to done, but what has Todd shown that makes you think he gives them a better chance to win. Experience? Where has that gotten him the past 7 games? I fully believe a more dynamic offense with TP under center and a (somewhat) healthy Beanie Wells is a better option at this point. Hate to say it, Todd earned his shot, but he hasn't run with it. We've lost three of the last six with him at the helm.

Todd Boeckman has been in the system for 6 years and from what I have seen out of him from the Illinois game on is that he has regressed. He's had his chance to prove himself and not taken the team on his back. Against Troy I'd like like to see Pryor get the start and over half the reps. Open the playbook for the freshman and let him try to stretch the field, roll the pocket for him both ways, run some WVU offensive plays and see what happens. Even if he can't find anything down the field he's a threat to pull it down and break off a 10 yard run at any time. If i remember correctly he pulled off 3 concecutive runs of over 10 yards against a fiesty USC defense that was expecting him to run on every play. After each of those plays he was pulled from the game. With the strength of our defense, kicking game and skill athletes, I see no reason why we shouldn't use Pryor throughout the entire game against Troy.

Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman likely to be starter

Monday, September 15, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Los Angeles- It didn't sound like Ohio State's starting quarterback job was up for grabs minutes after Saturday night's devastating 35-3 loss to USC.
"There's always competition for playing time," OSU coach Jim Tressel said. "I don't know about the starting spot or any of that business. But we're going to go back and evaluate everything. . . . I guess I don't know the answer to that question."
Frankly, given Tressel's affinity for seniors, seeing freshman Terrelle Pryor start as the Buckeyes (2-1) gather themselves to host Troy on Saturday would be something of a surprise. But certainly Pryor and senior quarterback Todd Boeckman will play, so Tressel's quarterback rotation could use a little tweaking.

Looking back to last year when Todd became the starter, he basicaly had no or little competion. Henton and Shcoen.. weren't ready either. Competition in practice helps you get better..if you know you can be replaced you have a bigger sense of urgency. Todd was basically annointed starter and has not shown much impovment. I was hoping that last years ending would show Todd what he needed to do to improve...and that the coaches would not go overboard on the sr. thing. Todd has skills but not everyone who plays QB is division I material. If the OL was unbelievable and gave him all day he might be fine..and if he had Beanie and a deep threat. The team is not in that position now so I think TP needs more PT. Iam not throwing Todd under the bus he has done all he can it is just the situation calls for a change..

Personally, I would hope we get to see Pryor more as the season goes on.......he is not the solution to the problems on the o-line or d-line, but he brings a certain excitement when he enters the game......

Pryor can certainly help with the problems along the O line. He can get himself out of trouble whereas Todd simply can't. Todd is the kind of QB that needs to be able to sit in the pocket and make his check downs. That pocket isn't there and I don't think he's the right QB to be running roll outs to move the pocket. He certainly isn't the QB to be running options which I am still speechless about.

Finally, it was said over the summer and it was reiterated on Saturday night: Everyone wants to watch this kid including the players on the team. That tells me that these players are responding to him. He seems to have that natural confidence and that natural leadership. Look at him jawing with that safety on Saturday night. TP and Jenkins looked like the only guys who felt they belonged on the same field as USC. You can't coach confidence and Pryor seems to have an abundance of that.

All that said, you won't see Boekman benched this season. I don't think Coach Tressel has that in him.

The players seemed to respond to Troy vs. Zwick the same way.

The best example I've ever seen of that phenomenon came in the 2001 Illinois game. Bellisari was serving the first game of his DUI suspension and McMullen got the start. Which wasn't too surprising, because McMullen appeared to be a better pure passer than Krenzel. But as the game progressed, and the two quarterbacks alternated series, it looked like two very different Ohio State teams out there, fluctuating exactly with which QB was taking the snaps. Krenzel wasn't particularly making any plays, he was mostly just handing the ball off to Jonathan Wells. But somehow, the entire offense seemed to play with noticeably greater poise and purpose when Krenzel was handing the ball to Wells than when McMullen was doing the same. It's a difficult phenomenon to nail down in terms of exactly what creates it, but I don't think there's any question that it exists. I don't know whether this same phenomenon is in play in the current situation, but I think we all saw some things this past weekend which at least raise the possibility.
