2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

Can't agree with ya there Mili, CK got his ass kicked for over 4 quarters vs. Miami in the Fiesta Bowl, kept coming back for more, and led the team to victory. That was one of the gutsiest performances I've ever seen on any level in any sport.

Boeckman got flat out blasted twice against YSU while he was releasng the ball and popped right up. He also got drilled several other times like that during the course of the season and I never saw him groggy or slow to get up. That is not taking anything away from Krenzel at all...just saying that Boeckman handles the hits as well as Krenzel did, not saying he took as many.

Several people I've spoken with have speculated that Todd's late-season swoon may have been a result of some of the shots that he took. There specific reasoning was technical, as they were medical professionals. On top of that, the specifics were highly speculative; so I won't repeat them here.

I will observe though, that after receiving a concussion near the end of his final season, Quinn Pitcock was never the same again. He played, but he wasn't anything near what he had been previously. Any connection between this and Todd's performance is purely speculative and should not be taken as a rumor, much less fact.

Don't tell Bauserman.
Don't tell him what? That he won't be running any change of pace QB packages this year?

These are three separate competitions imo... Bauserman has a clear edge at #1, Pryor #2, and there will be a battle for #3.

1. 2008 2nd String QB
2. 2008 Package QB
3. 2009 Starter QB

Perhaps JT doesn't end up using #2 all that much, but I don't see Bauserman running those packages instead of Pryor in 08... barring injury or garbage time. If Pryor's not ready, I see a steady diet of Boeckman. If he is, he'll be used sparingly, but will still have to beat out Bauserman for starter duties next offseason.

And do without the "pros " upchucking their opinion as to who is going to do what? C'mon man

What will happen is that Todd will be the starter and Joe will be 2nd string. and Pryor will get to play only after he learns the system and how to pass in College.

Sorry. I should clarify that I'm talking NEXT year. It looks like there will be no QB in this class so for next year that just leaves Bauserman and TP.
Not a good situation to be in if your QBs are used in the running game much.

Now you tell us. guess I can scrap that 10 page OJ/Boeckman comparison.

Yeah Boeckman did get popped big time in a lot of games last year, and considering how big he is they must've been some whicked haaard hits (/boston accent).

Boeckman is our man this year and lets just hope he improves to the point where he just doesn't screw things up for us. Boeckman doesn't have to be great in order for us to win he just has to be average with minimal turnovers. The last 4 games of the year he was flat our scary when he had the ball in his hands, he'd either fumble, come close to fumbling, or throw an INT.

Boeckman is going to be fine. Let's not lose sight of the fact that for most of the season, he was one of the best players on the team and was getting some Heisman chatter. He is beyond being a QB who just doesn't lose games. I know everyone is a little leery based on the end of last season, but a lot of comments seem to imply that unless TB makes huge strides, he will be a Steve Bellisari clone. One thing to consider,in the first 7 games, the D gave up more than 1TD only once, the last 5, they gave up less than 17 pts only once. Granted, the last 5 were the tougher teams, but you can't lay it all on Todd. IIRC, most of his INTs were almost like punts, seeing as they were on long balls. With most of the team returning and the influx of new talent, OSU should be improved in all facets.

The only time that INTs are like punts are when they are not only on long balls but also on third down. Here are his INTs over the last two regular season games (the NCAA page I'm using doesn't have the play-by-play stats for the LSU game):

1. Illinois. Sideline pass intercepted at the ILL 45 from the OSU 42 (13 yards down field) middle of 1st qtr.
2. Illinois. Pass intercepted in the Illinois end zone, from the Illinois 9 yard line on 3rd and goal, OSU's first drive of 3rd qtr.
3. Illinois. Deep pass intercepted by at the ILL 24 from the OSU 36 (40 yards down field) on 1st and 10.
4. Michigan. Pass intercepted at Michigan 33, just over 20 yards down field (play started at OSU 44) on 2nd and 12. Michigan also got more yards (33) on that INT return than they did (32) on their six punt returns.

Only one of those INTs was truly a long ball INT (third Illinois INT) and that was on 1st down, so no way can that be "like a punt".
