2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

Duane Long said that he thought Person would compete for playing time the minute he set foot on campus.

Yesterday on 103.9 here in Columbus on the Mark the Shark show Jeff Logan said that he has heard complaints from current and former O linemen about the way that they are coached. Both technique and scheme are being questioned by these guys according to Logan.

Now, no question what Tubby would do in the face of criticism. But Tress is not Tubby, thank God...

Having said that, could you tell me how Tress has handled personnel issues during his years at tOSU and YTS? Any changes have to be made in the past, and how did he do it?

Zone blocking from my understanding uses lighter offensive lineman that more athletic. They tend to be smaller but I think the biggest concern is how well the linemen move. They're used more in pulling and trapping. Offensive lineman in the scheme move around more than a typical scheme. There's usually a lot of double teams with the interior lineman where one will chip off and take a LB out after the initialize double team.

I'd add that the ideal is someone who retains traditional OL size with really good feet that allows him to move in space well. It pains me to say it, but Long is probably a good example.

Staff members have left for other jobs (Dantonio to MSU and Snyder to Marshall (?). Positions have been filled from within or by hiring the likes of Darrell Hazell and Taver Johnson. I have never known anyone on Tressel's staffs to be let go.

Conley, but he's the only one that I know about.

The number of lineman drafted from OSU and playing tells you the talent is there. Attitude and coaching seem to be in question and if what I heard on radio on Saturday night and Sunday am from fans, sportswriters, former players and a former head coach (not John Cooper) is indicative of the general mood around the program, then Tressel is going to be hard pressed to keep his buddy, Jim Bollman around.

WOW.............could that former head coach be Earle Bruce? It has to be, or is it refering to a former head coach like Glen Mason of Minnesota.

I remember the excitement over Mitchum, Connor Smith, Block O, Boone, and Skinner.

I don't remember the rest causing much out of the normal...a few were questioned.

Thank you. That's the way I remember it for the most part, although I didn't always agree. I was never high on Mitchum. I was very high n Skinner, but he was always injured, dang it.

And Boone has been a pretty darn good OL for the last 3 years. No, he hasn't been Orlando Pace, but anyone expecting any of our OL recruits to end up being another Pace aren't being realistic. Like always expecting the next Teddy Ginn.

For the record, I think Adams will be better than Boone.

Glen Mason would be a great OL coach, but I doubt he would take leass than a HC job. However, he does love tOSU, so it couldn't hurt to pursue it.
I'd be surprised if anything changed, coaching personnel wise, though.

That's been one of his weaknesses but taking his whole career into account, Boone has been a solid player. Not a dominant top-15 pick like we'd hoped for but not a flop either.

Boone and Person led last years team in penalties. This year it's a race between Boone,Person and Browning. Now thats talent

I think "solid" is a bit generous...for the hype surrounding him coming in, I think many would agree that he's been a bit of a disappointment.

I agree with Mili, given the words about Boone coming in, he was expected to be the next Orlando Pace - tons of accolades and awards. Though, I will say that he has been the bright spot surrounding line play that has struggled the last few seasons.

When it comes to the line, its simple, find your best guys, make em starters and stick with them throughout the remainder of the season.
