2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

go back to 05 and 04, the same things were said about these guys who start now, then...

Really? By whom?

I know Boone was highly touted, and I was excited to get him, but I don't remember people doing backflips over Cordle, Person, Rehring, Browning, etc. If they were, I can honestly say that I wasn't. Just Connor Smith, and Skinner. Skinner was hurt the whole time, and I have to say I've been dismayed that C Smith hasn't been able to beat out Person. I think most of us saw that Mitchum wasn't going to make a big impact from the start.

There's a difference between saying "Woo hoo! So-and-so's a Buckeye! Cant wait to see him on the field in S&G!" in the recruiting thread, and really evaluating how much of a positive impact so-and-so will actually have at tOSU. At least there is for me.

Next year we are looking at Block O plus Boren, and who gets the other guard spot?
I think we will see an upgrade in every line position except for LT next year.

Duane Long said that he thought Person would compete for playing time the minute he set foot on campus.

Yesterday on 103.9 here in Columbus on the Mark the Shark show Jeff Logan said that he has heard complaints from current and former O linemen about the way that they are coached. Both technique and scheme are being questioned by these guys according to Logan.

Adding to what grad posted, while I don't follow the OL as much as some of the members here who are either former OL themselves or are current coaches in HS or college, I do remember the big spunk-fest when Connor Smith pulled the trigger, and Boone was supposed to be the savior to our OL woes...hell, I even made a clip on his little 10-second "commit" clip from the Army All-Star game.

Well these guys can't all just suck, right? I remember everyone being excited about the clip of Connor Smith blocking Antone Hight about 10 yards down the field during a play off game. Hight got so frustrated that he took a swing at Connor.

Brewster is the only guy I hear positives about. Is it because he's so young that he hasn't gotten screwed up yet? I'm being serious here.

The number of lineman drafted from OSU and playing tells you the talent is there. Attitude and coaching seem to be in question and if what I heard on radio on Saturday night and Sunday am from fans, sportswriters, former players and a former head coach (not John Cooper) is indicative of the general mood around the program, then Tressel is going to be hard pressed to keep his buddy, Jim Bollman around.

Thing to remember guys is that these guys, even though they didn't turn out the way we had envisioned, are still Buckeyes. They aren't getting paid to do this so I don't think we should be so down on them. Questioning individual effort? Sure. But the struggles as a group go deeper than that.

they get tuition, shoes, clothes, food and a great oppurtunity. thats enough to open them up for disection in a profesional manner. not enough to bash.

I also think that the discussion has now moved on from individual effort and fire. If what Jeff Logan says is true and that there are guys questioning their coaching then that's going to play hell on morale.

Coaches get paid. Is that where this problem originates? Is it Tressel? Is it Bollman? What change needs to be made, if any? Are we recruiting the wrong guys? Personally I think the problem does come from the coaching staff. I love Tressel. I think he's exactly what Ohio State needed/needs/and will need for years to come. I don't hate Jim Bollman. He is a good coach for sure. But would a change there help the team? Or would it hurt us? I'm not so sure that is where the change needs to be made, but I don't know where else you make the change. How many more years do you give it? I say when Orlando Pace retires we hire him right away! :)
