2008 tOSU Defense discussion (official thread)

grad21, let me ask you a question to clarify (to me anyway..lol) where we are headed as far as the type of athletes we are recruiting. Are you basically advocating a 34 NT type to play DT and tie up blockers that allow the LBs and DEs to run free?? That's what I got out of your last post anyway, and if I am correct, who do we have currently or in the 09 class that would qualify?? I personaly would love to see us get the space eating golliaths like Big Daddy or Shaun Rogers, but I just don't see any kid who could pack that much weight on and still be effective in house or coming down the pipe. Hopefully, this is where you tell me where I'm missing something/someone..lol. Thanks in advance.

Anyone ever tell you that you have the perfect name for a linebacker?

Well, not really the massive 3-4 types who don't need to move much...but guys like Rob Rose who are adequate on an edge but possibly dominant inside. That type of athlete forces the OL to double team at the point of attack or take a chance with single blocking that could result in a huge play for the defense. The SEC schools have athletes on the inside...guys that can disrupt plays if they are not schemed. That type of disruption frees up bodies to swarm the football and opens up pressure packages.

Thanks Grad....that make more since considering our personnel both current and immediate future.

Maybe I am the only one, but do you see a subtle shift in the type of LBs and DL we are recruiting since the whole "tOSU doesn't have enough speed" stuff the media has put out?? I look at the 09 class so far, and I see OLBs who can flat out fly to the football. They aren't the big LBs we've had in the past, but smaller....and faster. Sabino is a big LB, but everything I've read and heard says that he's going to play the Mike. Anyway, it is just something I was thinking about this weekend.

Can we take anything away from the fact that Rose played on the inside late in the Troy game?

Was that just a once-in-a-while thing?

Was it mop up duty?

Or was it shades of things to come, given that he appeared to have a presence there?

It may have been said, but I think the biggest problem with the D is the lack of intensity on the field. I know it was Troy, but that shouldn't matter, they look flat. They're loaded with talent but aren't scaring anyone. When your all american line backer helps up the guy he just tackled, that guy isn't scared to run at him next time. Watching LSU/Auburn confirmed this, sure it's a rivalry and a conference game, but those defenders looked mad on the field. The level of intensity in that game was unreal. I don't know what it is, but these kids got to pick it up.

this discussion begs the questions

1-what do we do today/this year. scheme and personel wise what makes the team better?
2-future, who do you guys see out there for 08-09 and out further that fit changes you feel we need.

These look like questions that Heacock would have on his "Block O for tOSU Defense" sheet. Did you read "The Winners Manual" recently? :wink2:

1. First off I think scheme wise we are fine. In 2005 with AJ and Co our scheme looked great because we had a very active line. I say find your two most disruptive DT's and play them on the downs that count. Play the lesser DT's on the extreme situations (3rd and 10's). I think we also need to put Freeman in his best position WILL and then plan accordingly around him. I'd like to see JL moved to the outside to pretty much assure the outsides of the field are taken care of.

2. I think we'll put more emphasis on speedy D-lineman. I think the other places we'll see much of the same. The linebackers we have while kind of out of place are fast as any, and the Secondary is great IMO. It's that DL that's really making things difficult.

Right now the diffuculty from this year is coming from both the lines, and the WR's. Wouldn't you know it too thats where all our changes have come (along with QB). The coaches know where the problems are obviously and we're fixing them. With the way the recruiting is going (how much has the football center paid off??) we're set for a while recruiting wise. I see more blue chippers coming in and with all these freshman getting playing time I think it's only going to get better.

I'm a big fan of two gappers. Get some huge dudes who occupy space and then let the backers fly to the ball ala the Baltimore Ravens in '00. We've had success with this in the past.

In addition, there are few problems in life that can't be solved with the liberal application of ass kicking ferocity.Gear up and get the kids playing Buckeye football.Change the mentality from prevent to attack.

Our defensive mentality seems to be geared towards preventing the homerun but giving up everything in between. This has been proved to be a failure. Especially if Beanie (G-d forbid) can't go, our D is going to have to do alot more to help out the O.

JONATHAN QUILTER | DISPATCH
Ohio State safety Jermale Hines has the size to stop running backs and the speed to cover receivers.

For a while last Saturday, it seemed every Ohio State defender was wearing a No. 7 jersey.
Who made that tackle? Jermale Hines. Who tipped that pass? Jermale Hines. Who nearly had an interception in the end zone? Hines, of course.
Hines plays what the Buckeyes call the "star" position -- nickel back -- and in a 28-10 win over Troy, the sophomore certainly was a star, helping thwart the Trojans' quick-pass, spread offense.
"My mind-set was just to beat the man across from me and make a play," said Hines, who collected a career-high seven tackles. "Don't worry about assignments -- we have assignments, but our coaches tell us as long as you make a play, it really doesn't matter."

Continued.......

I'm looking forward to seeing how the defense performs after another week of practice with the new starting group. The DT's may be able to be a bit more disruptive by using their quickness, instead of bulk, Peterson and Scott were not big DT's but they used their quickness to great advantage.

At DE, Thad should really start to develop as he sees the field more. He should be a terror off the edge, yet since he played so much LB, he should still be pretty stout against the run.

Having Hines as a hybrid is great as well as he can tackle and hit like a LB, but run like a safety.

Being able to use all of these combos, and such a good rotation of players, should give tOSU a great deal of versatility as well as help keep all the defenders fresh.
