Two places where our depth should really help the D:

1. No need to have first teamers playing special teams. Normally, I like to see starters get their noses dirty on coverage teams, but we've got so much talent, it's not worth it. Spittler, Chekwa, Rolle, Amos, Sabino, O'neill, Rose, Gibson, etc. are all amazing athletes who are hungry to get on the field. Having 2nd and 3rd string players handle all the special teams duties should keep the 1st team fresher late in the season.

2. The possibilities for situational substitutions. I'm sure Laurinaitis, Freeman, Jenkins, Washington, Russell, and Coleman will not leave the field very often, but the other positions have a lot of options. Terry, Homan, Gibson, and Rolle each bring unique strenghts to the 3rd LB spot. Terry and Gibson are both strong against the run and effective blitzers. Homan and Rolle are faster and can cover. I don't see a whole lot of 3-4 being used, but it could certainly work. Again, we have the personel to make wholesale substitutions on D without any drop off. I like the abitlity to keep fresh legs on the feild at all times.

Trev Alberts proves his incompetence once again. His top 5 defenses:

5. Pitt
4. PSU
3. Auburn
2. tOSU
1. USC

I don't have any major issues with the first 3 but PSU and Pitt? PSU should have a nice D but it's more in the top 15-20 range, not top 5, and Pitt's probably shouldn't even be in the top 30. I'd take LSU's and UGA's D's over those 2 any day of the week. Also notice the Cameron "Heywood" mention.

You think that's pathetic, you should see his top five offenses. 3-5 are texas tech, byu, and tulsa. Just because you can put up 50 on the mighty panthers of Prarie View A&M doesn't make you an awesome offense. Alberts is a joke, but then again so are most sports journalists on TV.
That being said... can't wait till the Bucks take on the "#1" defense and show them you just can't stop the 28 gun salute. (See the-ozone)

I don't have a problem with OSU (obviously) and Auburn, but the other 3? USC lost their top 3 impact players. Pitt may be a good pick, but PSU lost their best LB. What about USF and UC? They may not be top teams, but their D was the main reason for their respective successes last year.

Agreed on USC. They should be very good by season's end, but they lost too much to be as good out of the gate as you need to be if you want to be the best in College Football. It is a season-long sport more than most others, a sport where the entire body of work is (or should be) considered.

As for USF though, I will have to see how they do without a shut-down corner. There was a big drop-off from their Jenkins to their next best corner. As we Buckeyes know as well as anyone, a shut-down corner can mean the world to a defense.

That's one of several reasons why I'm expecting improvement in this year's OSU defense. Last year, we had a shut-down corner, but used him as a safety because of a serious lack of experience at that critical position. This year, it has been reported that OUR Jenkins is moving back to his proper role as don't-throw-the-ball-my-way-if-your-name-isn't-Morelli cornerback.

but it just occurred to me that, since I used the above phrase, I should probably enumerate the reasons I expect improvement. Here they are in order of their contribution to improvement (IMO):
  1. Experience
    • I've posted it elsewhere but it bears repeating: The median experience for this year's 2nd team is greater than the median experience for last year's starters.
  2. Extra year of S&C for the DL
    • It has been reported that significant gains have been made.
    • The only reason this is not at the top of the list is because sometimes such reports are exaggerations
  3. Leadership
    • In pre-game commentary during the 2002 season, Gary Danielson presciently opined that Jim Tressel has turned the program around by preaching "Team" and "Senior Leadership". This team has "Senior Leadership" coming out of its ears.
    • I would be concerned about "Too many chiefs...", but not the way these Seniors have interacted with each other for the last few years.
  4. MJ moving to CB
    • As explained above...
  5. Intangibles
    • Hunger. They've had the door slammed in their face twice. This year I expect that they'll kick it open.
    • In 2002, Mike Doss set the tone for a championship run by choosing the Buckeyes over being a millionaire. This defense has 3 guys that made that choice (one of whom wears Doss' number).
    • They have a chance to do things no other Buckeye team has done, or at least not in a long time. This combined with their senior leadership and hunger will add to the drive to prepare like champions.
      • To beat TSUN 5 times in a row and 7 of 8
      • To win a 3rd consecutive OUTRIGHT :bigten: title.
      • To have a Heisman Trophy winner on a National Championship team (OK, that's not just the defense; but you get the idea)

I think every Buckeye fan will agree with your remarks about the team Daddy. Now myself I believe that they can achieve what you envision and of course I hope and expect to see that happen.
However I am more a bird in the hand man. I expect them to go undefeated and win the NC. But! I need to see them beat teams like Illinois and USC. I need to see them stop not only the spread but all the other types.
Jmo but the 2002 wouldn't have lost to Illinois last year.
