2008 tOSU Defense discussion (official thread)

He's really not been a sack machine though. I think he had like 1-2 sacks and one of his sacks was a sack that shouldn't had happened if Gholston would've been able to bring down the QB. He's going to have to stay at end because of numbers, but I'd love to see his size/speed inside as a pass rushing DT specialist and who knows maybe we still see it?

could you imagine seeing a defensive line like this on 3rd and long?

DE-Wilson
DT-Heyward
DT-Rose
DE-Keith Wells (or whoever is a speed rusher like Gibson, etc..)

I mean why not? both Heyward/Rose are hovering around 300 both heavier than worthington, and both are specialist in pass rushing moreso than our DT's.

for standard line of course don't go with that lineup but I would like to see us get the most speed on the field on 3rd and long.

That's nice and all, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they didn't play particularly well late in the season.

But they will be a year stronger/more experienced playing against teams that are now younger and less experienced.

You only get four years in college. The jump from year to year can be significant. The fact of the matter is we have at least three guys suiting up on our D who would have been first day picks in the draft. Two of them would have been top 10, which means they are starting from day one in the NFL.

I'm surprised with the talk (at least here) by some of Rose moving inside, there is no talk of worthington moving outside.

Was brought in as a DE, and his height/build is clearly more suited for the outside.

I realize we have more depth on the edge right now, but swapping positions with Rose seems like it would fit both players better, especially if Rose gets a litttle bigger.

Football2008 Football Outlook - Part Two - Defense
By John Porentas

Introduction, Defensive Ends, Defensive Tackles, Linebackers, Corners, Safeties, Overview
Introduction
Like the OSU offense, the Buckeye defense returns a lot of players in 2008.
The only 2007 starters not returning in 2008 are linebacker Larry Grant and defensive end Vernon Gholston. While finding a defensive end of Gholston's caliber will be difficult, the Buckeyes will be loaded with returners in 2008. Add to the returners the fact that just one backup in the two-deep will not return, defensive end Alex Barrow, and it's easy to get excited about OSU's defense in 2008.

06, and to a smaller extent 05, was the first year we really had the opportunity to judge how good of an offensive coordinator jt really was. it was the first year he had "his" guys on the field and they all had significant experience. this year imo is the first time we will really have the opportunity to judge heacock as a d coordinator. last year we were still very young both at safety and to a lesser extent d line. but this year we have considerable in game experience at every position and a ton of talent. he's had more than enough time to work with them and implement his schemes. im very interested in seeing how this d stacks up from a scheming perspective.

I'd like to see how Heyward progresses this year before sending into the middle... IMO, he did a fine job at 290 or so at getting pressure fromt he outside. If he gets bigger and loses speed then I'm all for it, but Cam reminds me of a young Will Smith.

I think he will definitely be a dominant player no matter where on the D line they line him up.
If you have an abundance of riches at DE and need a more dynamic player in the middle, then I think looking at Rose or Heyward in there is definitely an option.
If the staff feels that they are fine inside then by all means he can maybe impact the game more at end.
Either way, he's going to be on the field and he's going to make plays.

My take:
With the options we already have at DE, I honestly would like to see them try Cam in Worthington's spot. I think he could make the entire defense more effective.
