Pulley's legal issues lead to Hartline getting starting QB nod

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky quarterback Curtis Pulley's recent legal troubles mean sophomore Mike Hartline will begin preseason camp as the Wildcats' starting quarterback.
Kentucky coach Rich Brooks announced Thursday that Pulley, who was even with Hartline after spring practice in their competition to replace the departed Andre Woodson, has been demoted to No. 2.
Pulley was arrested on several traffic charges in Hardin County on July 22. He pleaded guilty to speeding in Hardin County District Court on Wednesday. A charge of driving on a suspended or revoked license was dismissed.

Gatorubet;1217115; said:What I like is the thought of a four or five wide no-huddle set with Demps Thompson Harvin and Rainey and Cooper It keeps the defense from crowding the box, which should allow Tebow high percentage conversions on third and two or three. Get too aggressive and he can dink a little pass to one of the race horses and look out.
It requires a disciplined defense to defend that. Like Spurrier's system when he hit the SEC, the spread gets some success from lots of defenses not seeing it. As more teams go to it, more DCs will figure it out until the next big thing. The fun-n-gun is not so scary now, and the spread will be a threat for a few more years until it gets old. Ultimately, the personnel will decide the deal.
Auburn resumes quarterback race
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Now, Auburn's real quarterback competition can begin.
Contenders Chris Todd and Kodi Burns settled little over the spring, partly because Todd was having shoulder troubles. They resume the race for the starting job when fall camp opens Saturday.
It's the biggest question facing the Tigers: Who will operate Tony Franklin's new spread offense? None of the principles seem particularly concerned, and Auburn was nonetheless the popular pick to win the Southeastern Conference Western Division.

No. 1 UGA suspends 2 players
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Georgia coach Mark Richt's offseason of dealing with players with discipline problems continued on Saturday night when he announced the indefinite suspensions of two players.
Richt suspended senior snapper Jeff Henson after his second alcohol-related arrest. He also suspended junior free safety Donavon Baldwin after Baldwin was injured in a fight in Athens early Saturday morning.
Richt said the players are not assured of having a spot on the 2008 team.
"This is the second incident for both of these young men in the last year," Richt said. "In my judgment their standing with the program is in question and they don't deserve to report with the rest of our team on Sunday."
Baldwin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in January and already had been suspended for one game this season.
Henson, Georgia's snapper on punts the last two seasons, missed last season's Sugar Bowl following a DUI arrest.
Henson was arrested again by Athens-Clarke County police on Saturday and charged with public intoxication and urinating in public. He is the eighth Georgia player to be arrested since the end of the 2007 season.
Kentucky kicks QB Pulley off team for rules violations

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks says quarterback Curtis Pulley has been kicked off the team for violating team rules.
Brooks made the announcement Tuesday at the team's preseason media day. Last week, Brooks had said Pulley would miss playing time for his recent brushes with the law but still had a chance to win the starting job for the Wildcats.
Pulley was arrested on traffic charges last month in Hardin County. In June, he also received a citation for marijuana possession in Louisville. Pulley missed last season because of academic reasons.
Pulley had been competing with sophomore Mike Hartline to succeed Andre Woodson as the Wildcats' starting quarterback. The dismissal likely moves Will Fidler to second on the depth chart. Fidler also was arrested last month on a disorderly conduct charge for an incident outside a Lexington restaurant.
