Slive says SEC will decide on television plans this fall

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) -- Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive says the league will make a decision on its television and multimedia rights this fall.
The TV deals with CBS, ESPN, Raycom Sports and FSN South run out at the end of the academic year.
Slive said at SEC football media days Wednesday that the options include an SEC Network similar to the ones started by the Mountain West and Big Ten conferences and the NFL.
Slive said criteria the league is considering include the ability to provide national exposure and to air events for other sports besides football and basketball.
He also said the league wasn't able to be free of NCAA probation, a goal he set five years ago. But he noted only the Arkansas track program is currently in the NCAA jailhouse.

I looked at Florida's projected starting defense in my Phil Steele mag and every single starter is an underclassman including 7 sophomores. Looks like they may have the best D in the country for '09 and if Tebow returns, their O will be right up there too.

While this is entirely possible and wouldn't surprise me, the other side of the coin is worth a look.

In 1987, Ohio State was expected to vie for the National Championship. IIRC, this was in part due to having four 4-year starters in the defensive backfield. In spite of having all that experience, the DBs were very, very ordinary (not unlike the rest of the team). The Buckeyes went 6-4-1 and the Head Coach was fired.

In hindsight, it was clear that the 4-year starters were what they had always been... ordinary. There were good players among them, but as a group they had never really shined or given any reason to expect that experience would make the difference.

Even worse was true of Purdue a few years ago. Their defense returned 9 starters and proceeded to thoroughly suck.

Fast forward to the present, Florida has the kind of athletes that could benefit from experience; so I suspect you may be right about them. On the other hand, it is entirely possible that they will never be world-beaters. We shall see.

The same holds true for this year's Buckeye defense. The DLs and Safeties showed flashes last year. Hopefully a year of experience can turn them into National Champions. It could go either way, but there is good reason to expect that experience will be the difference.

Every SEC team has "issues" this year. Even mighty Florida has problems at safety. Florida's schedule looks the best. But, they will still have some problems in the secondary. And what if injuries strike there?
I think it will be a relatively "down" year in the SEC.

I'm calling BS on those 40 times. I'm not saying those guys aren't fast, but they aren't running in the 4.2s. That is world class (as in Olympic sprinter fast) speed.

I'm not stating anything that we don't already know as the 40 time is the most overblown "stat" out there.

Experience doesn't guarantee success, absolutely. But, they are just one year removed from having an excellent defense so it's not like there's no track record. I doubt the '87 Buckeyes or '05 Boilermakers were recruiting anywhere near the same level Florida has this decade. Florida has 3 sophomores on their DL. You know as much as anyone how much experience counts for a DL.

FYI, according to Phil Steele, Purdue actually returned all 11 starters for '05 from a D that only gave up 17 ppg in '04. That team was just plain disfunctional. Certainly not the norm for an experienced team.

Of course, it is possible they don't live up to the hype. Hence the the word "may".

I'd say most of those are pretty damn accurate.

But to put it into perspective Brandon Saine ran a 4.29 at around 40 pounds heavier than Rainey.

Thank God someone said something. I agree with you. In the following article some of the Gators are claiming that Jeff Demps (who is the fastest teenager EVER in track and field and probably the 5th or 6th fastest person right now on the PLANET) isn't even the fastest person on their team. Now I know the 100m isn't the same race as the 40yd dash, but come the fuck on. They'd have you believe that a guy who runs an officially timed 10.01 in the 100m is middle of the pack on their team in speed. This is more typical SEC Mythology.
