2008 Heisman Trophy Discussion

Anybody else think Boeckman will have to put up Tebow-esque numbers to even get invited to New York? He's going to play 3rd fiddle to Beanie and Laurinaitis, and it's going to be hard to get any press without some retarded Playstation type numbers.

No. It's all about playing well in the big games. Texas was Troy's Heisman game. If Todd can have a similar game against USC and finish the season undefeated, he'll be invited to New York(and watch Beanie take home the trophy :wink2: ).

I don't want Boeckman taking away votes from Beanie personally.. It is quite possible that Beanie + Animal + Possibly Boeckman (personally I don't think he'll be too high on the Heisman list, but maybe that's just me) steal each other's votes.

If all 3 of them are there, that means Ohio State and by extension those 3 have had such a great year that a couple votes going one way or the other won't matter much.

It likely WON'T happen however....

Personally I don't think Boeckman has too much of a chance.. But Beanie IMO has a huge chance, and Animal might not get invited but he can still take some votes.. And next year looks competitive with Tebow coming back and also Moreno, Bradford, etc... Could come down to a small amount of votes. Animal got some hype this year and next year, especially if we shut down USC's offense, he will get massive hype..

It's been about a week since I've disagreed with you, so...

The Game was Troy's Heisman game, or at least the game which locked it up for him...going 29-41-1 for 316 yards and 4 TDs, leading the offense to 42 points, against the #2 team in the country in the biggest rivalry game in all of American sports will do that.

Agreed. He was already the favorite heading into the scUM game, but clinched it by dicing up the scUM D. Even with the early second half miscues, that was the point that he ran away with it.

If Beanie has a big game (140-150 yards, couple TD's) on as big a stage as the USC game, he'll be hard to beat.

While it did lock it up, the Texas game is what put him well ahead of the pack. Before that game, it was Quinn then Peterson then Troy. After Texas, it was Troy then everyone else. People knew what Troy and tOSU could do against scUM and other Big-10 opponents but they were skeptical of how he'd do against a team with a perceived advantage in athletic ability. Similar to what Todd and the team will be facing against USC.

I'm not so sure I agree with any of you. I felt like it became Troy's to lose not based on anything he did, but after the MSU vs ND game when Brady threw half a dozen picks they almost HAD to stop pimping their golden boy.

Disagree. The Texas game was our second game of the year. He had a good, but not great, game (17-26-0, 269 yards, 2 TDs). Adrian Peterson meanwhile ran for 165 yards and 2 TDs while Brady Quinn was going 25-36-0 for 287 yards and 3 TDs in a 41-17 blowout of Penn State that same day. At the time, it was Quinn, Peterson, and Smith, very closely in that order. The next week, Peterson ran for 211 yards at Oregon. Peterson had the edge on Troy until he got hurt and missed the last half of the season (he had rushed for 935 yards in six games with 10 TDs). Quinn did have his 3 INT debacle against Michigan that following week, so that's when Troy passed him. After that, Peterson had the edge on Troy until he got hurt. Troy had the slight edge on Quinn the rest of the season until his brilliant performance against the same Michigan defense that had earlier destroyed Quinn.

So, the Texas game didn't put him in the Heisman lead, but rather it solidified him as a valid Heisman contender and kept him close/even with Quinn and Peterson. His performance in The Game removed any doubt as to his being the best remaining player in the country (had Peterson remained healthy and played at the same level of productivity, his nearly 2000 yards with 20 TDs would've been tough to beat).

i think the Fiesta Bowl the previous year is what started it for Troy. Peterson going down in the season definately put Troy in the lead. i think the 4th quarter play against Penn State when he scrambled and threw the bomb to Robiskie is what solidified it. After that, I agree was his to lose.
