2008 Heisman Trophy Discussion

Florida should be primed for a huge season next year. That will help Tebow.
Beanie needs to get healthy and stay healthy. I don't know if he can.
And although we will still be good, we will have major losses in personal...again.
LSU will reload just fine. They will be loaded.
SC will need Sanchez to step up his game. I bet he will. They will have 2 weeks to prepare for us.
Oklahoma will still be very good.
Will next year be more predictable?

Jimmy Clausen on the watch list.
Ya... he should be #1. Evidently this columnist doesn't know about Jimmy's greatness.

Considering our RB will be a first time starter, that's not very surprising. You also gotta consider the fact that Brown, Grady, Minor, Horn, McGuffie will all see some carries.
Ya, I understand Michigan is young at RB... heck Hart has had that position under lock and key for 4 (glorious) years only to let others play occasionally when he gets dinged up. I just found it more interesting from the state of where Big10 football is now... usually if there are 3 Big10 RB's mentioned they are from Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan, not Illinois.

Kevin Smith says he's coming back to UCF for 2008.

Once again, the "record total" of Sanders' 2,628 yards doesn't include the 222 he had in his bowl game that year.

Why after 2K? UCF's Smith wants to be 'bigger, faster, stronger'

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Kevin Smith's sensational junior season at UCF won't be his last.

The All-American, who's closing in on Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record, said Tuesday he will return for his senior year.

"I have a lot of things that I want to work on, for me," Smith said. "I think before I enter a business where you're discussing money and your life's going to change, I want to be bigger, faster, stronger. I want to be at the top of my athletic ability before I go on to a field like that."

Smith has run for 2,448 yards, 180 short of the NCAA record Sanders set in 1989. Smith has a chance to catch Sanders in the Liberty Bowl against Mississippi State on Dec. 28.

And that 2,628 came in 11 regular season games. So Kevin Smith has 13 games to break the record that Barry set in 11.

It'll be 14 games - he played in the Conference USA's CCG.

You can apparently strike Kevin Smith from the list of potential Heisman candidates - ESPN TV just interjected that Smith has indeed decided to forgo his Senior season of college ball at UCF.

(Apparently he was projected at best in the 2nd round - but has made this decision despite that assessment).

ESPN article on the same.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Central Florida's Kevin Smith, the nation's leading rusher this season, changed his mind and will turn pro, he confirmed Sunday night.
Smith seriously challenged Barry Sanders' NCAA record of 2,628 rushing yards in a season, but finished 61 yards short. The running back was hailed as a hero three weeks ago for deciding to stay in school to earn a degree and help build UCF's burgeoning program.

Fiutaks's early guess at the 5 Heisman finalists this year:

Chase Daniel
Graham Harrell
Tim Tebow
Pat White
Beanie Wells

The call on the Heisman finalists as spring ball gets going

...

Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB Ohio State
While there's an anti-Ohio State sentiment out there, and will be all season long, Wells will be immune. After all, he only got two carries in the Florida debacle and tore off 146 yards and a breathtaking touchdown against LSU. Considered the top pro running back prospect in college football, the spotlight will be on all season long as he's expected to crank out yet another monster year, after running for 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns, behind one of the nation's best offensive lines.

He'll win it if ... He flirts with 2,000 yards, blows up in a win over USC, and Ohio State is in the hunt for the national championship until the end. The trip to Los Angeles on September 13th has to be the defining moment since few will give much love or attention to a huge season in the much-maligned Big Ten.

Now I love the guy but No. 11 Armanti Edwards has a D1AA player ever even received a vote

Ed Marinaro of Cornell finished 2nd to Pat Sullivan in 1971.

Neil Lomax of Portland St. finished 7th to George Rogers in 1980.

Gordie Lockbaum of Holy Cross finished 5th to Vinny Testaverde in 1986.
