2008 Football Rumblings

Like it or not, this is a defining point in Tressel's history.

He wins it all this year with all the talent or is admonished forever by the pundits.

Fair or not that is just the way it is.

You could have said the same thing about Bob Stoops or Pete Carroll in any of the years after they didn't win an NC. In some way, every season is a defining point for Coach T, but if OSU doesn't win the hardware this year, he will not be "admonished forever". He'll take some shots, and people will question his coaching abilities (like they've done since 2002), but unless he retires in Jan., he will have many strong seasons ahead of him.

Not hogwash outside of tOSU's fans' minds.

This team is loaded. The media has acknowledged that. If tOSU loses again in the championship or has a disappointing year, outsiders will begin the questioning.

Fair or not.

As Ohio State fans we know how good we have it.

Nah. With an improbable title run in 2002 (knocking off one of the best dynasties of recent memory), along with a program that is churning out some of the best talent in the country, this statement is a bit of an exaggeration. Let's not get too carried away. Tressel can put the guys in position to play, but he can't play the game for them.

Let's just sit back and enjoy the show, these guys are going to be GOOD. :tongue2:

Farewell Tour: Joys of college life (and one more BCS shot) brought back five key Buckeyes

by Doug Lesmerises Wednesday August 27, 2008, 11:03 PM

Marvin Fong/The Plain DealerFive Who Stayed: From left, Malcolm Jenkins, Brian Robiskie, Marcus Freeman, Alex Boone, and James Laurinaitis chose to play a senior season at Ohio State rather than take the certain cash awaiting them in the NFL.
Marvin Fong/The Plain DealerOSU offensive tackle Alex Boone.
COLUMBUS -- They stalked down High Street in a pack on a hot July morning, smoothing their Affliction T-shirts, checking their Blackberries, more than a half-ton of young, tough and cool. Not rich, though. Not yet. Stopping near an ATM machine, Malcolm Jenkins threatened to check his account balance.
"There's probably about negative 2 dollars in there," he said.
For postponing potential millions, the five Ohio State Buckeyes -- linebackers James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman, receiver Brian Robiskie, left tackle Alex Boone and cornerback Jenkins, who most seriously considered entering the NFL Draft last January and then returned for their senior seasons -- have reaped the rewards of adoration.
OSU fans love their guys, but this was even more personal.
You turned down the NFL to stay here? Really? You picked us!

Ohio State football notebook

BY TODD PORTER

NEW OFFENSE Not only does Youngstown State have to deal with better athletes on Ohio State's defense, but YSU is installing a new no-huddle spread offense with a new quarterback. Buckeyes Head Coach Jim Tressel said he's unsure if it's a running spread, passing spread or balanced spread. The guess is Tressel, who won 135 games from 1986-2000 at YSU, has a little outside knowledge. "It's a little bit of a guessing game for us," Tressel said. "We're preparing as if they can do it all."

WORST ROOMMATE A reporter was asking OSU players Tuesday an off-the-wall question about the worst roommates they've had. LB James Laurinaitis didn't hesitate, comparing the roommates he's had as a Buckeye. "Larry Grant," Laurinaitis said. "He used to listen to his ipod, and he loved to sing. He sang loud, too. He didn't care what time of night it was. He had a good voice, but the last thing you want to listen to when you're trying to go to sleep is Larry singing." Austin Spitler was a close second, for kind of the same reason. "Austin hummed," Laurinaitis said. "I don't think his brain could comprehend the words." Brian Robiskie was honest. He said he is the worst roommate. "I'm a talker," Robiskie said. "I'm not gonna lie. I talk in my sleep. I've heard so many stories about me. The first 10 or 15 minutes I go to sleep, I'm not speaking English. I'm just mumbling. I've woken some guys up with that."

2008 PREVIEW
Buckeyes players eschew big money in NFL to finish OSU business
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS - Alex Boone yanked off his pads, stripped away the tape, and dropped his helmet in disgust. It was Jan. 7, and Ohio State had just lost in the national championship game for the second year in a row. The sting left Boone and a lot of the Buckeyes hurting initially, but they soon gathered themselves, recognized the significance of their third straight Big Ten Conference championship and an 11-2 season, and decided to postpone professional football and return to campus for one final fling. "The NFL - that's a job and the money is nice, but even though we work hard at football here, we also have a lot of fun at it, too," Boone said. "And there's something about your senior season that seemed too good to pass up." So Boone, a massive offensive tackle who will be a four-year starter for the Buckeyes and a leading candidate for the Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman, came back. So did All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis, All-Big Ten quarterback Todd Boeckman, leading receiver Brian Robiskie, three-year starting linebacker Marcus Freeman, and two-time All-Big Ten defensive back Malcolm Jenkins.
