2008 Football Rumblings

So, this will be my last post before the official season kicks off tommorrow @ noon (had to order the big 10 network)

Just some things that have been going through my head...

Tommorrow is a mandatory work saturday, so I"m going to bust ass and hopefully be home in time for kick-off.

I"m excited: We've managed to make it through yet another off-season and its great to be able to watch our Bucks again.

I want to see Boeckman become the great leader, I want to see Pryor become the next QB everyone talks about, I want Beanie to be recognized as one of the greatest running backs we've had. I want the senior class to make this one something that won't be soon forgotten.

I'm nervous - Imho, this is one of the most (if not the most) important season in Buckeye history, it determines(sadly) how our football program will be viewed for the next years too come. Our success is crucial - We expect nothing less than perfection (especially with our talent), and I don't think Buckeye Nation as a whole could stand a 3rd straight title game loss...especially to an SEC opponent.

Two years has been enough, and their fans as a whole have outdone themselves filling in for the usual assholes of the college football world (this even includes our fanbase) To the point where I can't go to any Ohio State information online without seeing "41-14" "38-24" "0-10"... SEC speed, etc etc.

Best of luck to the men of the Scarlet & Grey, it'd be nice everybody has as much fun as possible and stays safe... and for the love of god, hopefully our guys stayed focused and hungry as they march towards a national championship.

Since you started the ball rolling, here are my preseason thoughts.

Beanie will come out on fire. He thinks he dogged it early last season, and he's got a ton of confidence going into the season. %100 healthy, and on a mission to carry his team to 13 wins, and make a Heisman run. One of his biggest improvements last year was his ability to find the cut-back lanes, his production skyrocketed after that. He should pick up right where he left off. The rest of the RB stable is as strong as its been since the Woody era. If Herron lives up to his billing, we'll have two punishers and two speedsters. A four-headed rushing juggernaut that will give opponents nightmares.

Boeckman should be improved from last year, which gives him a realistic shot at having one of the best seasons for an OSU QB in history. Not many people seem to see it that way, but 25 TDs and %63 completion rate is more than you'd expect from a first year starter. I don't want him to be a caretaker like Krenzel, I don't want him to be a gunslinging wizard like Smith, I want Todd Boeckman to be Todd Boeckman. The WR corps is as deep as ever, and should provide many different looks for defenses. I would like to see Nicol and Ballard used more. Both are great talents.

To say the defense should be lights out is almost redundant. How many years in a row can we field one of the top Ds in college football? The only area that may be less than All-American level is the D-line, and reports from camp point to it as one of the strengths. Even if the praise for the DTs is overblown, we have a ton of talent at DE/Leo. I would not be too suprised if no team scores more than 10 points.

Special teams should be solid, despite the kick scrimmage problems. The return game has to be better than last year. Plus, there's the fact that many of our ST players could be starters on other teams.

The best thing coming out of camp is the lack of injuries. By game two, we should be as close to %100 as a team can get. I can't remember an OSU as deep as this across the board. My thoughts are, of course, scarlet-tinted, but if there has been a season to get excited about, this is it. It's been the longest two off-seasons in recent memory, and all indications point to success. I don't even care about how the media portrays us, or what the SEC fools say, as long as our men go out and play hard, and play smart, it should be a season to remember. And it's finally here! Hope everyone has a blast tomorrow, wherever you shall be. Go Buckeyes!!!

Ohio State football: Answers on Wells, Pryor and polls

by Doug Lesmerises Wednesday September 03, 2008, 12:25 PM

large_PryorTD.jpg

Marvin Fong/ The Plain DealerTerrelle Pryor scored his first OSU touchdown on the ground against Youngstown State, and made it clear that he is the Buckeyes' No. 2 quarterback.

Beanie Wells looked like he was down for the year when he dropped to the turf and now he might even play this week

I've seen a few people suggest, I think seriously, the idea that this might be some sort of conspiracy to throw off USC.
"Hey, the big back's really hurt! No, he's OK. Or not OK. So he will play. Maybe."
Instead, I think this was a case of an injury that really hurt at the start and then wasn't as serious as it looked, and a player who, in the heat of the moment, feared the worst and projected that thought to a stadium full of people.

Buckeye seniors losing their marbles

By Rusty Miller
The Associated Press

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

COLUMBUS ? Joke with Ohio State tight end Rory Nichol that by the end of the season he will lose all his marbles and, unsmiling, he quickly fires back, "And hopefully we'll play for all of them."
It's clear that marbles ? the coaching staff's prop to impress on the seniors how time slips away ? is already having an impact on the Buckeyes.
Shortly before the start of the season, coach Jim Tressel gave each of the seniors a small case that contained 12 marbles ? one for each game on the schedule. Some were scarlet, some were gray (representing the school colors) with a blue one (for archrival Michigan) tossed in.
Before Saturday's 43-0 victory over Youngstown State, each of the seniors gave Tressel one marble. It's something they'll do before each game, underscoring how fast their final year passes and how they have to make each game count.

Some OSU wins more costly than others

September 4, 2008

And you thought gas prices were high. Try sitting in Gene Smith's chair as Ohio State's athletic director writes sweepstakes-sized checks to schools serving as practice fodder for the Buckeyes. They're listed under "non-conference opponents."
Ohio University, this week's cream puff du jour, is receiving $700,000 to spar in the 'Shoe. Youngstown State walked away last week with a 43-0 shiner and $650,000. Troy, not to be confused with the men of Troy awaiting the Buckeyes on Sept. 13, will get $800,000 to be the one-bite finger sandwich between USC and the start of Big Ten play.
According to a recent survey by the Des Moines (Iowa) Register, in which 82 percent of the Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) schools responded, only LSU ($2,850,000) and Nebraska ($2,725,000) paid more than Ohio State ($2,150,000) to secure non-conference opponents this season. The difference is that LSU and Nebraska are hosting four such foes, compared to three by OSU.
The staggering price to stage these home games has doubled in the last 10 years.

Ohio State football: Buckeyes' cupcake consumption is moderate

by Doug Lesmerises Friday September 05, 2008, 5:05 PM

medium_cupcakes.jpg
Plain Dealer file
Interesting breakdown by espn.com examining the nonconference schedules of BCS teams.

And not bad news for Ohio State fans.
Over the last 10 years, not including this season, the Buckeyes rank 23rd out of 60 BCS teams when it comes to scheduling other BCS schools in nonconference games. The breakdown does not account for scheduling Texas vs. scheduling Iowa State, counting all BCS schools the same, but by this standard, Ohio State is in the top half of toughest nonconference schedules.
In 36 nonconference games over 10 years, Ohio State is 12-3 against BCS schools and 21-0 against non-BCS schools.
Here's the chart breaking down all the BCS schools, including Minnesota's lousy schedule. It's worth a look.

Ohio State football
Spin can't stop fall to No. 5 in polls

Monday, September 8, 2008 3:02 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Ohio State football team is like a political candidate on the ropes: dropping in the polls and trying to put the best spin on things.
How about this line of reasoning after the Buckeyes narrowly escaped disaster Saturday against Ohio University:
Hey, maybe it was good that we struggled. Southern California, next on the schedule this week in Los Angeles, now might take us lightly.
"They're probably thinking it's going to be a slam-dunk win after watching us today playing (Ohio)," running back Maurice Wells said. "But they don't really know how good (Ohio) is."
So maybe you've lulled the mighty Trojans to sleep?
"Maybe so," he said.
