Missing blocks, missing catches, missing a PAT, missing tackles -- that near miss was OSU's tuneup for Southern California? Buckeyes better hope the missing piece was Beanie.
In the polls

The Buckeyes dropped from third to fifth in both major polls behind Southern California, Georgia, Oklahoma and Florida, all of whom were supremely more impressive the first two weeks. Saturday night's game at USC will be one of survival in the national title race for the Buckeyes, and it's not autumn yet.

Coaches still give out awards

9/8/2008, 6:00 p.m. EDT The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? What's brewing today with the 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes ...
BUCKEYES BUZZ:@ It's easier to get word on nuclear armament in Iran than it is to get an update on injured TB Chris "Beanie" Wells. But one observer said that Wells was "hanging out" when practice started on Monday but was dressed to play. No report, however, on whether he was able to practice or withstand contact.
IT'S AN HONOR:@ The honorary captain for Saturday's 8:22 p.m. kickoff at No. 1 Southern Cal is Rex Kern, who led the Buckeyes to the 1968 national championship with a win over USC in the Rose Bowl.

Ross Oltorick was scout team player of the week on offense.

If that's not confirmation that OSU practiced for USC instead of OU last week, I don't know what is, because one person Ross Oltorick won't ever be mistaken for is Boo Jackson.

Todd Boeckman and the Buckeyes know they have work to do before Saturday's game at USC.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- USC took the recommended route to Saturday's showdown at the L.A. Coliseum, thumping Virginia in its season opener before enjoying a bye in last Saturday.
The method has worked smashingly for the Trojans in recent years, and their Week 3 opponents usually pay the price. Just ask Nebraska (49-31 losers last year). Or Arkansas (70-17 losers in 2005).
Ohio State's path stretched a little longer but seemingly contained no cracks in the pavement -- only two overmatched teams to steamroll. But the Ohio Bobcats provided quite the detour, putting the Buckeyes in a 14-6 hole before a fourth-quarter rally.
The Trojans' ability to stay on course makes them the popular pick in Saturday's game, but some Ohio State players hope they can benefit from the road less traveled.

Ohio State coaches must pick up pieces in a hurry
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
LOS ANGELES ? Any time an unnatural disaster takes place, there is an immediate assessment of the damage, a triage of the victims, emergency care and repairs, and eventually, a reckoning ? somebody has to explain what happened.

After Ohio State was defeated, degraded and disgraced in a 35-3 loss to No. 1 Southern California Saturday night, the first-responders sorted through the debris, talked to the survivors, and found significant wounds, and the likelihood of a very tricky recovery.

It was certainly Ohio State?s worst loss in the era of head coach Jim Tressel, now in his eighth season, and the team?s biggest rope-a-doping since Penn State knocked the Buckeyes around 63-14 back in 1994.

?We?re going to go back and evaluate everything ? from what we designed to how we executed to what we?re going to do going forward,? Tressel said before Ohio State left the Coliseum and limped home.

How do Buckeyes recover from this?

Monday, September 15, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Los Angeles- Ohio State was ranked 14th in the coaches poll released Sunday, the Buckeyes' lowest standing since falling to 3-2 after a loss to Penn State in week five of the 2005 season. To reach a third straight national title game, OSU might need all of the 13 undefeated teams above them to lose - twice.
"Obviously we all wanted to get back to the national championship and have an undefeated season," safety Anderson Russell said, "and that's going to be really, really hard now."
This was not the Ohio State plan. Twenty-seven seniors are not supposed to add up to a 32-point loss to USC.
