At Ohio State, it's perfection or bust

Tressel's run of excellence has created expectations that might not be met

With two straight trips to the BCS title game and nothing to show for it, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel faces high expectations in 2008.

Only an idiot earns the Heisman on his wedding night, takes out the trash without asking and shaves every day. You might call this person "a fine husbanding all-star." I call him a moron who fails to understand the curse of high expectations and its crushing long-term implications.
Enter college football's most uxorious husband, Ohio State's Jim Tressel. Maybe, just maybe, one or two other coaches have gone so far as Tressel to please their fan base ? USC's Pete Carroll comes to mind ? in their quest to put food on the table, take out the trash, mow the yard and bring home the bacon.
Tressel is 73-16 at Ohio State. National championship in 2002. A dominance of the Big Ten unseen since Woody Hayes raged on the sideline. Program clicking along nicely on a massive pipeline of talent guaranteed by the ironclad lease Tressel has taken out on recruiting in Ohio. No significant dustups with the NCAA.

The Best?

Going into the season with the seniors, underclassmen with significant playing time and the new recruits... top-to-bottom is this the best overall roster we've ever had at Ohio State? It seems we are stacked at every position with proven stars and promising players.

You could definitely make that argument on paper, yes. But I won't venture into that territory until they bring home that crystal ball.

I agree, until we see the win in the big game, it's only speculation whether or not they are "the best". This team has all the makings of being one of the best but I think it's a little early to talk about this.

Offseason Conditioning

BSB (hard copy)

Not sure where this thread belongs, but there is a great article in buckeye sports bulletin written by Adam Jardy about off-season conditioning.

some tidbits

* 35 players set personal bests in at least 3 categories
* Pentello, Ballard, and TWash set personal bests in 8 categories
* Z. Slagle 10 cateories
* Saine rain 4.29
* JamO 4.39
* Beanie 4.44
* Robo 4.54 (still recovering from injury)
* Small - had same splits with Saine after 10 and 20 yards but tweaked his hammy
* sabino 4.68 3rd fastest LB? doesn't seem that fast to me
* doss was working out with team 4.75 (holy slow)
* Freeman 3.96 in shuttle (only 4-5 guys in last 4yrs under 4 sec.)...also hang clean of 420..breaks team record...Freeman is pound for pound most explosive player

I see the difference between this team and Troy Smith's team is one of fan humbleness. For example, I went around saying I needed a new NC baseball cap (or golfing cap as it were) all season. This year, I'm saying well, we'll see......like most of the previous posters.

The arrogance is gone, we acknowledge that OSU has the makings of a great team: experience, star power, senior leadership, depth, rookie potential, etc. but until the 'crystal football' is brought to Columbus, then all it is is potential. I, and maybe some of you, figured that the crystal football was already on its way when Troy Smith took the field for his senior year, and we got shellacked by Florida. Next year, I wanted an SEC team in the NC game, and we still got shellacked.

OK, IF OSU is fortunate to get to the NC game, I STILL want an SEC team, just to prove that OSU (and the rest of the B10) are a for-real league, but I'm hoping that we win this time.....big would be good, but I'll take a victory nevertheless........this team has all the ingredients, hopefully Tress can stir the pot.......

That's great to see. 4.68 isn't too bad considering that the kid is a true freshman. Robo's time is also good even without an injury. Wells' 40 time is ridiculous for how big he is. Very impressive. I'm just glad this shows that the team is working very hard.
