2008 Buckeye Football Season

Dispatch

Meetings give Buckeyes new perspective

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The Buckeyes have been gathering at the Wexner Football Center at 7 a.m. lately for some philosophy on football schemes to go with their toast. One morning, an offensive coach explains the philosophy and intricacies of, say, a pass protection scheme, complete with diagrams. The next morning, a defensive coach explains the ideas behind a zone blitz or cover-two scheme to the offense.
The idea is to make the players and the coaches more aware of the big picture, defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said.
Coach Jim Tressel had promised that this spring would be heavy on the mental side for the Buckeyes, and he has delivered.
"I've gotten a ton out of it," Heacock said. It has given him an idea into "what those offensive gurus are thinking all the time. Those guys, shoot, they're in a different world."

So, if anybody remembers, the Houston Astros had a lineup a few years back that was called the "Killer B's" because it cosisted of Jeff Bagell, Craig Biggio and Derek Bell.... later, Lance Berkman would be added.

Well, I was thinking... we could have the EXACT same thing:

QB:Boeckman
RB:Beanie
RB:B.Saine
WR:B.Robiskie
WR:B.Hartline
TE:Ballard

Plus, Boone and B.Person, possibly Brewster and Browning too, maybe throw Boren in the mix (but he will be the year after). Just somehting I found interesting.

tOSU sometimes had this group on the defensive line in 1975 and '76:

DE: Brudzinski, Bob
DT: Beamon, Eddie
NG: Brown, Aaron
DT: Buonimici, Nick
DE: Bell, Farley (although Pat Curto usually started in '75, and Kelton Dansler in '76)

Rivals $

From Olin Buchanan's mailbag; Someone asked "Why has Ohio State become such a love-them or hate-them team?". His basic answer, "Because they win."

FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE FOOTBALL - 20 Questions: Time to unveil BCS matchups

BCS Championship

Florida vs. Ohio State

College football fans outside of Columbus might welcome this matchup as much as
a kick in the store, but it could happen even if they each have a loss. Make no mistake
about it, and like it or not, Ohio State is the most talented team in America. With James
Laurinaitis, Malcolm Jenkins and Alex Boone all putting off their millions for another year,
arguably the best kicking game in the country, Beanie Wells running the ball, depth
everywhere, and Terrelle Pryor providing a possible bolt of lightning here and there, it'll be
a shocker if the Buckeyes don't roll through the regular season, and that includes road trips
to USC, Wisconsin and Illinois. Even so, there will be a collective groan if they end up in
Miami instead of Pasadena.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Big Ten Network football analyst Gerry DiNardo was in Columbus Saturday and got his first look at the 2008 Buckeyes.

DiNardo points to not only the talent returning on both sides of the ball, but the depth at multiple positions that will make the Buckeyes a contender once again in 2008.

I have always enjoyed studying this chart. Not just for the upcoming season, but to look down the road and think about how we will look next year and the year after and how we are doing in recruiting.

Scholarship Breakdown by Class and Position

It has never looked so good. Much is made of having 22 seniors and all that experience. But if you covered that entire first column this is still a team that would contend for the Big Ten title. (Our only weakness would be depth and experience at OL - and even there we would be well ahead of UM.)

It sure is a great time to be a Buckeye.

I haven't followed football closely until this year so I don't really have a reference point for a lot of things. I have noticed a lot of players getting injured or having surgery. Is the number unusually high this year or is it normal. I understand it's very early in the year but I can't help but worry a little.

Who would you go with, Jax? Obviously '98 and some of those early-mid 70's teams come to mind.

1968
1969
1970
1973
1974
1996
1998
2002

Just off the top of my head and a case could be made for '54 and '61.

Untill I see otherwise the debate for GOAT shall always be between the '69 and '73 teams as far as I am concerned.
