2008 Buckeye Football Season

Doss was never that fast, just compensated with great play and instincts. I believe his combine time was pretty lousy as well.
Reported 4.47 and 4.53 at pro day workout

USATODAY.com - One big question dogs Doss

The scouts think enough of the Canton, Ohio, native that he's rated among the top three safeties in the draft, projected as a late first-round or second-round selection. A strong safety, Doss undoubtedly helped himself with an impressive pro day workout last month, when he posted 4.47 and 4.53 times for 40 yards.

You are right in that he was never a burner and after the injuries he's had, that 4.75 isn't too surprising, honestly.

Someone just posted in a player's thread that the player being discussed would make the winning play in at least 1 game this year.

If the statement means that the player will make a play in the last 2 minutes of a game that makes the difference between a win and a loss, then I disagree with it. But my disagreement has nothing to do with the player; so I will not post it in his thread.

My disagreement comes from the fact that I do not believe that ANY OSU game this year will be decided by 7 points or less: not even the USC game.

I've believed this for some time now, and it's time to go on record; this year's team will be dominant in a way that is reminiscent of the '95 Nebraska team. They're a very different team than those Cornhuskers. The only thing they will have in common is the level of dominance. They will just plain roll.

This team has a combination of talent, experience and motivation based on their history that comes along once. Not once in a lifetime, not once in a generation, not once in a decade... just plain once.

I say all this knowing that I have been guilty of being too optimistic in the past; but secure in the knowledge that I was one of the few that never lost faith during the run in 2002. Sure I could be wrong, again. But what if I'm right, again?

If someone from the future came back and told you that in 50 years this will be considered the most glorious season in OSU history; what would you do differently? Anything? May I make a suggestion?

If you haven't been to a game in awhile:
Get to a game. Do whatever it takes.

If you've never been to a bowl game:
Go to Miami. Move heaven and earth to get there.

If you go to games every year and you've been to a bowl:
Go to an away game or two.
Record every game. Wear Buckeye Gear Every Day. Drink in every single moment of this season like it were your last moment on earth.

These are the good old days. Enjoy them for all they're worth.

I will agree with the 2nd part of your post about doing this/that for the season.

However, I cannot agree in saying that I feel that this team will dominate like the mid 90's Huskers. I mean cmon its ridiculous to expect any team to do what they did to their competition. I don't see us racking up 63points on the Gators(or whoever the NC opponent may be if we're lucky enough to get there).

I've only been to two Buckeyes games in my life. Purely coincidentally, they were both in 2002.

I don't think I'll be able to make any games this year though. Maybe we could hold off on having the best season ever until the Buckeyes play out here at Cal in 2012 or 2013?

Bit of bravado - but a post well done.

It would be historic for OSU to achieve such a feat - the more than 7 points part.

2002 of course we had several close games.

In 1973 we did not lose a game and every one of our wins was by 21 or more. But there was that nasty 10-10 tie.

In the magical 1968 season we only beat MSU by 5.

In 1961 none of our wins was by less than 9 - but again there was a nasty tie.

And in 1954 Iowa came within 6.

All that said - the planets are aligned.

As for me I will do what I normally do when I expect great things. Hold my breath and my tongue. I just can't say it out loud.

Dude, drive to SoCal. Save $2-$3 every day from now until week three. Scalp. Just fucking go for it. There will be Buckeyes everywhere.

I don't think that domination needs to require racking up points. Using the 95 Huskers as example does seem to imply that, since that team never scored less than 35 points (in a 7 point win over WSU), but a 28-6 game is, in my mind, more dominant than a 35-28 game. Looking at 95 NEB and a team I consider to be equal in domination, 94 Penn State, almost all of the games were decided by more than 14 points; NEB had one close call, PSU had two, UM and IND. If you look at 04 USC, a team considered to be one of the best in recent years, you'll find no less than five games decided by less than 2 TDs. The 06 Buckeyes, Tressel's most dominant team, had only 2 close games (ILL, UM) before the catastrophe. Given that this years D should be one of our best, and the O should be able to score 20+ points a game, I don't think DBB's prediction of 10+ wins is overly optimistic. History shows we should allow for at least one close call. There's a great line from Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, "The heart's memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good.". That definitely applies to people's perception of classic teams, they forget that they looked average at least once. By the way, if you reverse that quote, it describes this board's opinion of Todd Boeckman. :tongue2:

The question that has really bugged me for this upcoming season is that, if this Buckeye team does "dominate" as we say, what effect this will have on the "voters" that have the strangle hold on College Football rankings?

If tOSU rolls through teams, will the voters just think that the Big Ten is weak and that tOSU plays no one like we heard all last season, which may actually hurt them in the polling, or is it that if tOSU has close games will voters think that tOSU has fallen off or are not as good as teams that may roll through teams?

We all know that the 2002 Nat'l Champ run was all very close games which paid dividends when it came to that game, and that in 2006 dominating teams had somewhat of an adverse affect in that other game.

Either way, I know tOSU has a stupendous stock of talent, and that last year was an anomaly in College Football. This year's team will be ready for whatever, I am just curious how tOSU will be viewed this upcoming season, obviously the team has a stereotype (for lack of a better term) to overcome. How will the "voters" view their performance's?

That's exactly why it's imperative that our Big Ten brethren have a good showing in OOC games. If OSU can handily defeat conference teams that beat high profile BCS conference teams, voters will have to take that into account. USC having a good year (except for week 3) is also important for OSU's prestige. I believe that if we beat USC we will be ranked in the top 2 and control our own destiny. History shows that teams do not drop in the polls unless they lose. Occasionally, early in the season, there will be some shuffling if a team gets a marquee win, but a win over USC should keep us near the top. Just win, baby!

As long as we beat USC, and not by a fluke or anything, but unarguably beat them, then I don't think it matters so much if the conference is perceived to be weak or strong vis-a-vis OOC wins.

The second part of what you said, USC having an otherwise good year - I don't think you have to worry about that too much.

I would love for this to be a '98 type of dominating team, with early season blowouts allowing the young guys to get some PT, beat USC out there, then stomp through the Big Ten culminating with a revenge win over IL up there, and a major a**kicking of scUM.

If this team can't get motivated after losing the last 2 NC games, then they won't have what it takes to make it to a third.

HOwever, I strongly think they will and they do.

Excellent point. I'll go as far as to say if lack of motivation is a problem, they don't deserve another chance at an NC game. I'm sure it's not going to be a problem. These seniors are on a mission. I feel sorry for the scout team this year.
