Why the Buckeyes are in trouble: Offense has been an issue throughout the season, from the time when OSU was averaging 50.5 points in consecutive pre-conference losses to North Carolina and Butler to the Buckeyes scoring fewer than 70 points in 14 Big Ten games. The 1-2-2 zone defense Thad Matta cooked up to suit this particular team has worked well, but he hasn't been able to do much about getting supremely gifted freshman Kosta Koufos the confidence to convert point-blank shots (only 50.6 percent on 2-point attempts). If Koufos were able to consistently draw in the defense, there would be more room on the perimeter for Jamar Butler and Jon Diebler to operate. The other element lacking in the Buckeyes attack is free throw attempts; they just don't get fouled often enough. No player has been to the line 100 times. All this has caused there to be a number of close losses, including road games to Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota -- three teams that have no shot to make ! the field. OSU rallied with home victories over NCAA locks Purdue and Michigan State in the final week. Another win just like that last one could put the Buckeyes onto the bracket.
