Clemson ends Fla. State's run as ACC favorite
By Kelly Whiteside, USA TODAY

GREENSBORO, Ga. - The Atlantic Coast Conference has a new Bowden at the top. Clemson was picked as a heavy favorite to win the ACC by the sports media at the conference's football kickoff event Monday, thus unseating Florida State, which had been a preseason favorite every season since joining the league in 1992.

So you dethroned your dad, Clemson coach Tommy Bowden was asked. "Nah, he's got 300 more wins, I don't think I dethroned him," Bowden said of his father, Bobby, the winningest coach in major college football history with 373.

It's the first time Clemson has been the league's preseason choice since 1991, which is also the last year the Tigers won the league title.

Cont'd ...

I hate to admit it but Heather Dinich is so far doing a more or less respectable job of covering the ACC at ESPN. Today, the ACC's most bitter rivalries (according to her) and the hate-o-meter.....both of which are something that it looks like all their new "bloggers" were ordered to do for each conference:
ESPN - ACC

She's got the rivalry thing pretty close. NC State and UNC hate each other more than most people think, especially on the NC State side. FSU/Clemson is bullshit though.....from the ESPN perspective, it's like the biggest thing ever because of the Bowdens. Nobody else cares. Many ACC teams have their biggest rivalries outside the conference: Maryland/WVU, Clemson/South Carolina, GT/UGA. Swap out that BS FSU/Clemson one, though, and add UVA/Maryland. There's some real, legitimate hatred there.

Agreed

Here in Tallahassee, they are sort of interested in the Clemson game; but only because Tommy seems to have Daddy's number.

They proved to me that they don't even understand hatred when half of them who used to profess hatred for the Gators ended up covering their Seminole bumper stickers with UF bumper stickers.

Yellow Jackets QB Nesbitt will be fine after bruising shoulder - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com Live Scores, Standings, Stats

Yellow Jackets QB Nesbitt will be fine after bruising shoulder

ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson insisted Josh Nesbitt will recover quickly from a shoulder bruise the quarterback sustained in practice Wednesday morning.

Though Nesbitt wore an ice pack on his right shoulder for the final half of the early two-hour session, Johnson was hardly surprised when the school's medical staff cleared the sophomore to practice in the afternoon.

"You get hit in football," the Yellow Jackets' first-year coach said. "We've always practiced that way for 28 years, and I can honestly tell you I have never lost a quarterback in practice. We haven't lost that many in games, either, not to that. We've had guys tear their knee up or something like that. I think if you went back and looked at it, you'd find dropback (quarterbacks) get hit a hell of lot harder than these guys."

FSU's Athletic Director had a meeting with boosters a few days ago, where he finally agreed to go public with an acknowledgment that the Noles were not done with their cheating scandal. Despite the spin coming out of T-town these last several months, he let the faithful know that they did indeed get a NOA from the NCAA, that it may involve "2-9 scholarships a year for up to three years in football", and that "the NCAA may be looking to make an example of us."

Something like five or six schollies a year for three years will freaking cripple them for years, and also f-up their 09 recruiting. We've noticed that they are trying to get an unusual number of early commits (unusual for FSU), and that they tend to be FSU leans geographically and legacy type deals....IOW, kids who are less likely to change their minds if/when the hammer falls.

This could get ugly up there, despite the low profile so far. FSU refuses to release the NOA to anyone, although most schools put it on a website and let the press have access. This leads us to believe that it has some bad shit in it, and that the Noles want to try to minimize the press coverage and not hurt recruiting. We will see. In any event, most of my Nole buddies have been saying that the school was proactive, the penalties accepted, blah blah blah...they are now stunned by the possibility that the hammer will come down.

Bear in mind this comes at a time of transition at the top of the program. It has long been wondered (outside of Tallahassee anyway) whether Bobby Bowden created a program or if he WAS the program. In other words, will FSU still be a power when BB leaves.

But now, as we approach the time for his departure:
  • Their dominance of the ACC is already over
  • They still have not fully endowed all 85 football scholarships
    • This was done so long ago at tOSU that most Buckeye fans don't even know what it means
  • They still don't have an indoor practice facility
    • And what they have on the drawing board is nothing near the WHAC
  • They haven't even begun to raise the funds for that facility they have on the drawing board
Make no mistake, the Seminoles face an uphill climb to stay relevant in the world of college football. People keep waiting for their return to glory. Some will proclaim it every time they win an ACC championship, which might be once a decade or so. But until they get another Bobby Bowden, their next day in the sun may be a long time coming.

....so they didn't like when I posted this post, on Warchant.com asking for verification. Keep in mind, I'm an FSU grad, and wasn't flaming at all. Pretty sensitive in Tally right now....I feel like a bangwagon fan in the sense that FSU plays well, I'll get into it, but for the time being I could give a shit. The program has spiraled into an embarrassment over the last 6 years. Figures I enetered school the year Rix was the first starting freshman in school history. Does anyone want to visit the record books and see how many home losses I witnessed or how L's we took during my 4 tenure. Watching a Jeff Bowden offense was like poetry in motion BTW....

Nobody has made a public records request?

Did not like as in deleted question, or a temp ban? I heard they were doing both. On Premium site or the one I go to?

Rumor is that the NOA is critical of TK handling of the deal, so it is not being released. Who knows? Seems that the not releasing it is doing more harm by the rampant speculation than releasing would.

Did not mean to get you in trouble Bill. I had heard that Dot on that site was not happy if you brought it up, as he had been telling everyone for months that everything was okey doke. They do not like to pay for premium content and then not get the inside scoop.

The Gator poster on GatorCountry that is the source of much of this says that some recent court decisions support the position that since individual students are mentioned in the NOA, there are privacy concerns that allow FSU to stone wall. But, see Indiana and their posting of the NOA with redacted personal info.

Post was locked, and I was told to not post rumors...nothing too serious, but the post wasn't received well at all by moderators..specifically nolethruandthru...fair enough, I guess.

They way things have gone over the last several years, they truly believe negative posts will lead to lost recruits, additional negative press, etc...I think they're pretty paranoid, not sure. It's also a ghost town on the free board which is why I only visit about once a month...and yes, any good info you can get is deleted and considered premium. A random fan with good info, is told not to steal premium info b/c Dot apparently is the only person with access to all things FSU....

Projected Hokies starting WR Luckett suspended after DUI arrest

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech suspended receiver Zach Luckett indefinitely Monday after being arrested for the second time Sunday for drunken driving.

Coach Frank Beamer had no further comment beyond announcing the suspension of the 6-foot-3, 212-pound redshirt sophomore.

Luckett, 20, was arrested Sunday and charged with driving under the influence and operating with a revoked license. It is his second time he has been charged with drunken driving.

I suspected that we hadn't seen the last of the cheating scandal. FSU's self-imposed punishments went only as far as the players and had little to do with self-control on the institution; the problem is that this wasn't a player misconduct issue. Yes, the players were willing participants - however this is beyond even the NCAA's catchphrase "lack of institutional control." It's institutional enabling, and FSU's self-punishment did little to address that. Not to mention the double-layer cupcake they scheduled to soften the blow.

Scholarships, hell. We may be looking at a postseason ban.

Yeah, Warchant blows, but Section B is pretty good.
